Technical drawing

PROD 110, Semester one, 2019

Week one: Introduction
Drawing
• The art of representation of an object by
systematic lines on a paper
• Technical drawing is a means by which a designer
can communicate a design to others in a design
team, or to those responsible for
manufacture/construction, in a complete and
unambiguous manner. Various conventions have
been developed over the years to support this
process, most notably two-dimensional
orthographic projections (i.e. plans, elevations, and
sections) described above and three-dimensional
metric projections” (Rogers, Milton, 2014)

Pito, designed by Frank O. Gehry for Alessi, 1992

• Artistic drawing, freehand drawing
• Concept sketching: enables designers to develop and evaluate their ideas on
paper, storing them for later discussion, manipulation, and iterative development.
( includes annotation, numbers, arrows)

• Thematic sketches: These drawings are the initial exploratory visions of how a
proposed design may look.
• Schematic sketches : These drawings place less emphasis on the external styling
or appearance of a design, and focus on defining and working within a
“package”—the fixed dimensional parameters of a design, including vital data
such as off-the-shelf components to be used and ergonomic parameters.

• Technical or engineering drawing

The aim is
• Visualisation
• Communication
• Documentation
Visualisation
• Use lines to visualise a form
Lines to represent surface, edges and contours
of objects

Communication
• Try to write a description of this object
• Ask someone to sketch out your written
description

Documentation
• Document to send to other
teams
• Document for future
references

power-tool
• Manual drawing
• Digital drawing (CAD, computer aided drawing)
Application
• Architecture and civil engineering: building houses, constructions,
bridges,
• Mechanical engineering: simulation evaluations and manufacturing
purposes
• Interior design: space layouts and furniture arrangements
• Product design: communicating new and innovative ideas
Different projection
• Isometric
• Oblique
• Orthographic
Isometric projection
Oblique projection
• Standard Projection symbols

Used in New Zealand,

States and Australia
Orthographic projection
Engineering drawings are normally
intended to indicate the shape and
size of an object. Representing
length, breath and dept of a 3D form
on a 2D drawing is overcome by the
use of a technique called Orthogonal
Projection.
In-class exercise

method using grid papers
Homework
