Chapter 4 – values, attitudes and job satisfaction

Values has something to do of giving honor or importance to a person, job and being what you are now.

Like for example, the trend now of having millennials employee do not value work so much, once they
get employed at first, excitement, etc., is evident and what, they easily get bored and the worst thing is
to resign from their work without even a back up yet joining with the increase numbers of
unemployment.

How people learn values:

1) Modelling – those people you have engaged will give you the mirror of what you are and
influence you growth as a person and even in the workplace. Though it is true, but, God has
given us the power to know what is right and wrong, in other words you have worst parents,
teachers or friends, its still your choice which path you are going to pass – crooked one or the
smooth one.

2. Communication – trust your self, you should not only believe what you hear and see, but what is
more ideal. Communication is the lifeblood in our existence. You can correct the intelligent people
and they will be grateful in terms of communication, but u cant correct those who are fool, cos they
will take it against you.

3. Unstated but implied values – it refers to your instinct in adapting some ways, meaning it has
something to do with your initiative in doing things without being told in the right way.

4. Religion – spreading the good news has a great impact of our lives. If we love God, we also loving
other people, those who are in need like “be the first one to love”. Regardless of what sector you
are from, we only have one God. Athough, temptation always comes in, but the loving God will
always there to forgive us. All you have to do is to start again.

The effect of value congruence and incongruence

We learn from the previous lessor about individual difference, that even identical twins will vary from
each other and will also affirm that there values in the organization are not congruent in every individual
worker, maybe because of their beliefs and that will become incongruent. Try to check our politics in our
country, the Pres. Duterte has difficult time to manage our country because the values are incongruent.

All parties were fighting one another, even in the recent pandemic. So, I think, it would also be our
realization to find ways and use your initiative to find solutions, instead of more complains. Like the
militarys’ objective,”obey first, before your complain” . Try to endure more pain. Go out from your
comfort zone, so that you will more understand that it would be in your advantage. Lets accept the fact
that most students are fond of reading anymore, so, I think this is the best time for you. Not all can be
reached without sacrifice. So, try to learn with fun in your online class and be innovative.

Classification of values –

Espoused values – workers are made to believe of what should be valued in the company such as in the
sales, it’s imperative to increase more sales in order to get more revenue.
Enacted values – reflected in the actual behavior of the individual worker, such as, the reason for
working is to sustain the needs of the family.

Instrumental values are the ways to accomplish the terminal values like achieving it for a lifetime.

Attitudes – reflects how one feels about something. It has something to do with our personal
judgement that people will only behave, if they believe that you are worth liking.

Components of attitudes –

Cognitive – it is also a domain that a person should educated and it is more on his intellect. In such a
way, that u can behave dependent on what you perceived.

Affective – another domain which refers to your feelings as the basis of your desire to do such thing.

Behavioral – intention to behave in a certain toward someone or something. It would coupled in your
exposure and learnings.

The diagram could help also help you understand more.

Differences in people disposition

Workers predisposition would either be positive affectivity which means that this worker is satisfied to
his work which tends to work harder without complaint while negative affectivity are those who are
dissatisfied in their work and will be considered as liabilities of the company

Methods of influencing attitude – direct experiences which was his exposure and stored while indirect is
the social learning means his acquaintance with his parents, etc and engagement with them that will
greatly his influence his attitude. Sometime, we cud identify a boy as like father like son, etc

Important attitudes in the workplace

1) Job satisfaction – a person could be satisfied if he is fitted on his work

2) Job involvement – if a worker will be given importance to do the work
3) Organizational commitment – where workers are expected to support the organization on their
goals and vision

Effects of employees attitudes

Positive attitude- workers under this concept is not a problem of the organization cause they are assets

While negative attitudes – refers to those workers who are not satisfied in their work, salary, status, etc
and will surely affect the company

Making positive attitudes work for the organization –

The role of a human resource officer should screen well the applicants, knowing if they possess a
positive characteristics and provide trainings for those who has negative characteristics, in order for
them to become productive in the organization. A successful company always their people as an asset
and not a liability. So, management should provide them the right compensation and involve them as a
team. The new trend of management now is to involve the subordinates in their decision making which
means the lower level will make a plan first and submit it to the middle level and to the higher level for
the finality of their decision. Lower levels are consulted and this is a good practice that workers will be
more motivated to work.

Benefits of job satisfaction –

 Productivity – if they are satisfied with their, they could increase their output
 Low absenteeism and turn over - if a workers is satisfied, then to look up in working just like a
student, if the student is motivated to have good grades, then, they will not miss any activity in
their classes without any complaint. Turn over has something to do how frequent the workers to
leave the company.
 A stronger tendency to achieve customer loyalty – service oriented
 Less job stress and burnout – have fun in working with a happy environment
 Better life satisfaction – impressive vision
 Loyalty to the company – security of tenure and willing to serve up to retirement
 Better safety performance – goes for quality performance and willing to maximize the utilization
of resources.

Factors associated with job satisfaction –

 Salary – equal salary to equal work or more than enough to provide compare to others.
 Work itself – sometimes management failed to assess the capability of the workers to assign or
them to the job suited to them, especially the intelligent one, that they prefer for a challenging
one.
 Promotion opportunity – this is the work of human resource, to design a program that will
introduce a career path, so that workers will be given an opportunity to be promoted. Train
those workers with potential, so that they will be demotivated.
