2 Introduction to SR03-01
Scandinavian Micro Systems provides a series of NMEA to Synchro Converters for driving
various "old style" Mechanical Synchro Repeaters using Digital Heading Data.

All of the units can read various digital serial formats as supplied by modern gyrocompasses
primarily NMEA 0183, but also other proprietary formats.

SR03-01 Universal NMEA to Synchro Converter models can be configured to drive different type
of Mechanical Repeaters depending on voltages and frequencies required.

2.1 Single Unit operation w/one Gyro Compass

The ScanRepeater™ SR03-01, Universal NMEA to Synchro Converter is shown in a system
using the existing Gyro Repeater Synchro Distribution Unit - driving the existing mechanical
repeaters.

2.2 Single Unit operation w/two Gyro Compasses

The Universal NMEA to Synchro Converter units will allow you to exchange your old Gyro
Compass, but keep the old Mechanical Repeaters and the old cabling, thus saving time and
money when converting to a new and modern Gyro Compass - see drawings below.

2.3 Redundant Operation w/one Gyro Compass

Redundancy can be achieved by connecting two (2) Universal NMEA to Synchro Converters in
parallel. The figure below shows a Block Diagram using one gyrocompass and two Universal
NMEA to Synchro converters.

Figure 3 Two redundant SR03-01 with one common gyro.

The gyrocompass feeds the same heading to both of the two Universal NMEA to Synchro
Converters. Only the primary SR03-01 must be aligned to the mechanical synchro repeater(s).
The primary and secondary SR03-01 will then run in "parallel" and be synchronized producing the
same output signals.

When the primary SR03-01 falls out - an external changeover relay will switch out primary SR03-
01 synchro signals and in the secondary SR03-01 synchro signals. The primary SR03-01 controls
the external changeover relay with a switchover relay control signal.

2.4 Redundant Operation w/ two Gyro Compasses

A higher degree of Redundancy can be achieved by having two gyrocompasses each driving its
"own" Universal NMEA to Synchro Converter as shown in the figure below.

Should one gyro compass and one SR03-01 fail the systems will still operate.

2.5 Optional Remote Control Unit

It is possible to connect SR03-03 - external
display control unit to the SR03-01 also called
the Remote Control Unit. The Configuration
Menu is the only difference between the built in
Local Control Panel the Remote Control Unit.
The Remote Control Unit can not be used to
configure the Synchro Format.

NOTE: For heading monitor / Compass compare

functionality SR03-03 is required to indicate alarm status to Figure 5 Remote Control Unit/SR03-01
the staff on the bridge.

NOTE: SR03-03 and SR03-01 requires the same software version.

2.6 Automatic Shut-Down & Alarms

The ScanRepeater™ Universal NMEA to Synchro Converters have built in automatic “shut-
down”, in case of short-circuit, over-current, critical temperature.

6 How the Synchro Output works

You will find the technical specification for the Synchro output in chapter 12 Technical
Specifications.

6.1 The synchro signals

To control a synchro motor you need three
phase signals S1,S2 and S3 and two
reference signals R1 and R2.

Definitions of the synchro signals are:

R1 to R2 = KE sin ωt
S1 to S3 = E sin ωt sin (θ)
0
S3 to S2 = E sin ωt sin (θ + 120 )
0
S2 to S1 = E sin ωt sin (θ + 240 )

All synchro motors is or can be used as an AC

motor. SR03-01 is designed as an AC synchro
converter. The five signals (S1,S2,S3,R1,R2) have a
reference modulated frequency, normally
50Hz,60Hz,400Hz or 500Hz. The reference
frequency for all the signals need to be in phase if
not it is not possible to control the synchro motor.

NB! Do not use any other reference signal (R1,R2) than SR03-01 outputs.

6.2 Synchro Output Operation

6.2.1 Automatically Synchro Output Shutdown
The synchro signal will be faded out and disconnected if minimum one of the three critical alarm
circumstances in the table below occurs.

Critical Alarm source Comments

Overloaded SR03-01 sinks more current than configured maximum. (Current
Limit),
Critical Temperature Internal temperature exceeds the maximum limit (70 ºC).
Synchro Power Off It is possible to “Power off” the synchro signal with the [POWER]
button pressed for 5 seconds on Local Control Panel.

6.2.2 Synchro Disconnected State (Alarm active)

When a critical alarm is active the synchro output will be disconnected in the following way:
1. The synchro output signal will be faded out.
2. The Change Over relay signal will close the NC contact and open the NO contact.
3. The Alarm Relay will close the NC contact and open the NO contact.
4. The Alarm Light will start flashing red.
5. The Alarm Sounder will start Pulsating.

6.2.3 Synchro Soft Start

If the critical alarm conditions are removed the synchro output will follow a soft start algorithm:
1. The Alarm Sounder will stop Pulsating.
2. The Alarm Light will stop flashing red.
3. The Alarm Relay will close the NC contact and open the NO contact.

SR03-01 Manual Rev2-04.doc - Page 15 of 47 - Scandinavian Micro Systems AS

SR03-01 User Manual

4. The Change Over relay signal will open the NC contact and close the NO contact.
5. The synchro output signal will fade in. (2200 msec.)

6.3 Synchro Output Recovery Function

If SR03-01 looses the 24 VDC inlet power supply when the mechanical repeaters are running the
output heading will be stored in a Non Volatile memory before shutting down the system. When
SR03-01 restarts - the stored heading (recovered heading RH) will be used to synchronize the
mechanical repeater with the serial data input heading.

6.3.1 Recovery after shutdown at high speed

If SR03-01 shuts down when the mechanical repeaters has an high speed, the mechanical
repeaters positions when it stands still will be unknown for SR03-01. This will lead to one or more
degrees misalignments. The effect of these will dependent on the mechanical repeater type and
specification. If this should happen – just align the SR03-01 once more.

6.4 Synchro Output Overload

SR03-01 measures the 24 voltage power supply input current. The following overload ALARM
algorithm is design in SR03-01:

If the average current in 320 msec. exceeds the Current Limit it will be generated an
Overload alarm. The Current Limit is changeable in the set-up menu.

When the synchro output is overloaded, the synchro output will be turned off in 10 seconds. The
current will then fall down to under the Current Limit and SR03-01 will then soft-start the synchro
output again.

PRECAUTION: If this repeats successive 10 times - SR03-01 will NOT continue to setup the
synchro output again. The user must then power cycle/reset SR03-01. The system needs
maintenance.

If the synchro output runs for more than 60 seconds without any Overload alarm the 10 times
counter will be reset to 0.

6.5 Stuck Repeater indicator

SR03-01 has a built in load test that will detect if a Mechanical Repeater is stuck and give a
Warning (non-critical alarm). SR03-01 senses the abnormal/unequal load when a repeater gets
stuck. If the stuck repeater is removed the stuck repeater indicator will be removed.

6.5.1 Stuck repeater calculation

To calculate a stuck repeater the Rate of Turn need to be between 0 and 60 degrees per minute
and the synchro signal requires rotating one turn. It is not possible to do this calculation if the
heading stands still.

6.5.2 Stuck repeater indication

Stuck repeater warning will not trigger the alarm output relay and the buzzer. The ALARM led on
the control panels and a blinking line in the display will indicate the fault.

6.6 Optional mechanical Repeater Lamp Output

SR03-01 has a transformer for generating power to the Mechanical Repeater Light for some
specific synchro formats. The Light will sink effect from the output reference signal so the Light
load will be additional to the normal synchro reference mechanical repeater load. Se the 11.4.3
Synchro Signal Output Connections including the Repeater Light connected for how to connect
the transformer and additional information.

7 How to Configure the Synchro Output Format

7.1 Caution! Disconnect Synchro Load!
Before configuring the Synchro output type disconnect the SR03-01‟s synchro phase S1/S2/S3
and reference R1/R2 wires from the mechanical repeaters!

It is possible to damage synchro repeater motors when generating to high synchro signal voltage
for low voltage repeaters!

7.2 Caution! Select Correct Phase (S1/S2/S3) voltage!

SR03-01 booster requires phase voltage equal as given for the Mechanical Repeater. The
Mechanical Repeater can be seen up on as a transformer so the Reference voltage R1/R2 will be
transformed to a secondary voltage at the Phase signals MRS1/MRS2/MRS3. If the Phase
voltage returned from the Mechanical Repeater is higher than the Phase voltage generated in the
SR03-01 S1/S2/S3, the Phase voltage amplifier in SR03-01 need to sink the returned power
witch again generates more heat inside the converter.

Mechanical Repeater
R1 MRS1
SR03-01 MRS2
R2 MRS1 =< S1
MRS3
MRS2 =< S2
S1 MRS3 =< S3
S2
S3

So be sure that SR03-01 generates equal phase voltage (S1/S2/S3) compared with given or
measured Mechanical Repeater values (MRS1/MRS2MRS3)!

7.3 Find the correct Phase voltage for the Mechanical repeater
For some mechanical repeaters you will only find reference voltage and frequency given for the
synchro motor. SR03-01 requires both the Reference and Phase voltages given with the correct
transformer ratio for the mechanical repeater. Follow the procedure to find the correct Phase
voltage:
Mechanical Repeater Multi Meter (V-AC)
R1 MRS1
SR03-01 MRS2
R2
MRS3
S1
S2 Disconnected
S2

1. Disconnect all repeater(s) from SR03-01.

2. Use the synchro customize menu to setup SR03-01 with the correct Mechanical Repeater
reference Voltage and Frequency - R1/R2. Do not care about the Phase voltage. See 7.6
How to customize the Synchro Output.
3. Connect ONLY the Reference signals R1/R2 from SR03-01 to only ONE mechanical repeater
– let the mechanical repeater phase signals S1/S2/S3 be disconnected.

SR03-01 Manual Rev2-04.doc - Page 17 of 47 - Scandinavian Micro Systems AS

SR03-01 User Manual

4. Turn the compass manually around. Then measure and find the maximum RMS AC Voltage
between MRS1/MRS3. This maximum RMS voltage is then the “correct phase voltage”.

Then you can calculate the transformer ratio: TransRatio = VR1/R2 / Vmax(MRS1/MRS3).

The heading source to the Synchro output will be automatically switched:
From Internal Recovery heading to Serial Heading 1 (H1).
From Internal Recovery heading to Serial Heading 2 (H2).

9.1.1.1 From Internal Recovery Heading to Heading 1 (H1) or Heading 2 (H2)

After reset SR03-01 will execute an automatic switchover from the internal recovery heading (RH)
stored in non volatile memory and to one of the serial Heading 1 (H1) or Heading 2 (H2). The
input heading 1 (H1) or 2 (H2) that SR03-01 reads first will automatically be selected as source
for the Synchro Output.

After power up SR03-01, it requires that one of the heading input sources 1 or 2 is valid (received
and valid). If not - the automatic switchover will not be executed. The synchro heading will then
still use the internal recovery heading.

9.1.1.2 Automatic switchover from Heading 1 (H1) to Heading 2 (H2)

We will look at a situation where both serial heading inputs is configured, received, valid and we
have no compass compare alarm. Normally the heading 1 (primary) is sourcing the synchro
output. If then the heading source (gyro) 1 falls out the heading 2 will be automatically switched
in.

For safety reasons the automatically switchover function will not be handled back again from
heading 2 to heading 1.

9.1.2 Manual Switchover when compass compare alarm

If the difference between heading 1 and heading 2 exceeds the compare limit we will have a
Compass Compare Alarm situation and the automatically switched over will NOT be executed.
The user then needs to handle a Manual Switchover operation. It is possible to manually switch:
From heading 1 to Heading 2.
From heading 2 to Heading 1.

acknowledged. To acknowledge the alarm press the button or send a NMEA ACK
sentence to the SR03-01.

10.5.2 Button Acknowledge

ALARM

Pressing the RESET button on the Control Panel all unacknowledged alarms will be
acknowledged. The RED ALARM LED will stop blinking and the buzzer will be muted. Alarms that
do not exist any more will disappear from the Panel when the alarm is acknowledged.

10.5.3 NMEA ACK acknowledge

The NMEA ACK sentence can acknowledge one alarm ID. When the SR03-01 receives NMEA
ACK it will acknowledge only that alarm ID. If there are other unacknowledged alarms the RED
ALARM LED will still be blinking indicating unacknowledged alarms.

If all alarms are acknowledged the RED ALARM LED will turn steady on to indicate that there are
alarms that have been acknowledged and still is active.

12.6.2.1.2 Validation time for PPLAN sentence – 10 seconds

If the PPLAN sentence disappears for more than 10 seconds the NMEA PPLAN-interpreter will
not decode ANY NMEA heading sentences.

12.6.3 Baud Rate

Baud Rate can be selected in the men as: 4800, 9600, 19200 or 38400 b/sec.

12.7 Synchro Output Signals

12.7.1 Static Resolution & Accuracy
Internally the SR03-01 uses a 16-bit angular resolution but for the output stage it is reduced to 12
bit to feed the analog to digital converters. The output-sampling rate is 1 KHz. The practical static
accuracy is measured for 1X signal to be better than ±0.4 degrees.

12.7.2 Rate of Turn (ROT)

The unit will drive the Synchro Repeaters with a maximum rate of turn (ROT) limited to 1200
degrees per minute (20 degrees/second) independent of gear ratio and reference frequency.

12.7.3 Data Filter & Signal Processing

SR03-01 accepts heading update frequencies from as low as 1 update per second and up to 50
times per second for High Speed NMEA at 38400 bits/sec.

Since the input data resolution is normally 0.1 degree with NMEA 0183, which is equal to 36
motor degrees at 360X - it is necessary to filter the data in order to create a smoothly varying
Synchro Signal to run the Mechanical Synchro Repeaters.

The filter used by SR03-01 is a Low Pass Average Filter with a Filter Length of 512 millisecond.

12.7.4 ”Lag Error” / “Schleppfehler”

The Low Pass Average Filter creates a Dynamic Error (Lag Error or “Schleppfehler”) that is
proportional to the Rate Of Turn (ROT).

Since the filter has a constant delay we can describe in the table below the lag error. The only
parameter for calculating the lag error is the rate of turn (ROT).

Lag Error = ROT [deg/min] * (Filter Coefficient) [sec] / 60 [sec/min] ). [deg]

= ROT [deg/min] * ( (0,512 / 2) [sec] / 60 [sec/min] ). [deg]
= ROT [deg/min] * 4,2665*10E-3 [min]. [deg]
