2 Introduction to SR03-01
Scandinavian Micro Systems provides a series of NMEA to Synchro Converters for driving
various "old style" Mechanical Synchro Repeaters using Digital Heading Data.
All of the units can read various digital serial formats as supplied by modern gyrocompasses
primarily NMEA 0183, but also other proprietary formats.
SR03-01 Universal NMEA to Synchro Converter models can be configured to drive different type
of Mechanical Repeaters depending on voltages and frequencies required.

Redundancy can be achieved by connecting two (2) Universal NMEA to Synchro Converters in

The gyrocompass feeds the same heading to both of the two Universal NMEA to Synchro
Converters. Only the primary SR03-01 must be aligned to the mechanical synchro repeater(s).
The primary and secondary SR03-01 will then run in "parallel" and be synchronized producing the
same output signals.
When the primary SR03-01 falls out - an external changeover relay will switch out primary SR03-
01 synchro signals and in the secondary SR03-01 synchro signals. The primary SR03-01 controls
the external changeover relay with a switchover relay control signal.
A higher degree of Redundancy can be achieved by having two gyrocompasses each driving its
"own" Universal NMEA to Synchro Converter as shown in the figure below.

The ScanRepeater™ Universal NMEA to Synchro Converters have built in automatic “shut-
down”, in case of short-circuit, over-current, critical temperature.
All of these alarms are OR-ed into one alarm function so that any one of these conditions will start
flashing the Alarm light on the Front panel, drop the Alarm Output Relay and start the Sound
Alarm. The Alarm Output Relay will also activate in case of Power Loss to the unit.
To silence the Alarm; Press the ALARM Button (Red). Details about the alarm can be read from
the display.

NB! Do not use any other reference signal (R1,R2) than SR03-01 outputs.
4. The Change Over relay signal will open the NC contact and close the NO contact.
5. The synchro output signal will fade in. (2200 msec.)
If the average current in 320 msec. exceeds the Current Limit it will be generated an
Overload alarm. The Current Limit is changeable in the set-up menu.
When the synchro output is overloaded, the synchro output will be turned off in 10 seconds. The
current will then fall down to under the Current Limit and SR03-01 will then soft-start the synchro
output again.
PRECAUTION: If this repeats successive 10 times - SR03-01 will NOT continue to setup the
synchro output again. The user must then power cycle/reset SR03-01. The system needs
maintenance.
If the synchro output runs for more than 60 seconds without any Overload alarm the 10 times
counter will be reset to 0.
It is possible to damage synchro repeater motors when generating to high synchro signal voltage
for low voltage repeaters!

So be sure that SR03-01 generates equal phase voltage (S1/S2/S3) compared with given or
measured Mechanical Repeater values (MRS1/MRS2MRS3)!
7.3 Find the correct Phase voltage for the Mechanical repeater
For some mechanical repeaters you will only find reference voltage and frequency given for the
synchro motor. SR03-01 requires both the Reference and Phase voltages given with the correct
transformer ratio for the mechanical repeater. Follow the procedure to find the correct Phase
voltage:
Mechanical Repeater Multi Meter (V-AC)
R1 MRS1
SR03-01 MRS2
R2
MRS3
S1
S2 Disconnected

4. Turn the compass manually around. Then measure and find the maximum RMS AC Voltage
between MRS1/MRS3. This maximum RMS voltage is then the “correct phase voltage”.
Then you can calculate the transformer ratio: TransRatio = VR1/R2 / Vmax(MRS1/MRS3).

Inside the SR03-01 you will find the synchro connection block for the Synchro Output Signals
where the reference R1,R2 and the phase signals S1, S2 and S3 are connected. As an option it
is possible to source the Repeater with an additional Lamp signal which is in phase with one of
the reference signals.
PRECAUTION: The lamp signal is relative the Reference signal. Selecting wrong Reference
signal relative the Lamp signal will give 4 times as high voltage as wanted and the lamp will
blow! Verify the lamp voltage before connecting the lamp wire to the repeater.

11.4.4 Synchro signal cabling faults and the related heading error
If there is mismatch between the Mechanical Repeater heading and the output from SR03-01 do
the following:
1) If the mechanical repeater rotates in the reverse direction related to SR03-01 and the
gyro - exchange cables S1 and S3.
2) Align all the mechanical repeaters.
3) If there still is mismatch between the Mechanical Repeater headings follow the flow chart
below.

When an alarm is present and if the unit looses Power, the NO contact will “open” and the NC
contact will “close”. During normal operation the NO contact is closed and the NC contact is open.
Not used.
Connect the heading 1 and 2 cables as shown below. Remember that heading
1 will be selected if both heading 1 and 2 is available. The input follows the
IEC62162-1 standard and IEC62162-2 standard. If NMEA high speed is used
with TxD+/ TxD-./ TxGND let the TxGND signal be protected and unconnected.
Connect the Remote Control Panel cables as shown. Connect the TX signal
from the Controller Board with the RX signal to the Remote Control Panel.
The Remote Control Panel also requires 24V DC input.
Connect the NMEA serial channel for ALR/ACK and/or HDT sentences to
the P1 (INTER CONNECTION) connection block. This is a full duplex
RS422 interface and meets the IEC62162-1 & IEC62162-2 specification.

Since the input data resolution is normally 0.1 degree with NMEA 0183, which is equal to 36
motor degrees at 360X - it is necessary to filter the data in order to create a smoothly varying
Synchro Signal to run the Mechanical Synchro Repeaters.
The filter used by SR03-01 is a Low Pass Average Filter with a Filter Length of 512 millisecond.
Since the filter has a constant delay we can describe in the table below the lag error. The only
parameter for calculating the lag error is the rate of turn (ROT).
13 Maintenance
13.1 Dust filter
Inside the SR03-01 you will find two fans for cooling the amplifiers. A dust filter is installed at the
air intake to protect the SR03-01 from dust inside. This filter needs to be cleaned when it gets
contaminated.
13.1.1 Specification
Filter material : Polyester foam 40 ppi (pores per inch).
Size : 123mm x 83 mm x 6 mm.
13.1.2.1 Interval
The cleaning or exchange interval for the dust filter is dependent of how the environment around
the SR03-01. If the temperature alarm occurs check the dust filter!
