Lesson 1: Society and Education- Philosophical Perspective

Reflection
Teachers as Catalyst of Change
In this world, changes are inevitable. Along with these changes comes also the
progress of our different philosophical views in our educational system. It starts from
the classical philosophies, to the modernized perspective and down to the postmodern
philosophies. In relation to this, coping up with these changes is indeed important,
thus adaptation gets in the way. It enables us to blend with our environment and
conform with the emerging educational needs of our society.

As educators, each one of us has our own way of coping up with these changes,
has our own philosophy that we believe in and has our own freedom to choose our
own perspective. What are our aims for teaching? This has always been a question to
us which I believe in has varied answers because each one of us is unique and every
teacher possess their own philosophical view.

As I started my teaching career at the public school, I can really say that it
really molded my philosophical perspective as an educator. I have seen the real
scenario, real problems and situations that emerge with the diversities of my learners.
There were lots of factors that I must take into considerations. Thus, there’s no
philosophical perspective is a perfect fit to a situation, one should be flexible in
addressing the needs of the learner and the society where he/she lives in.

Nowadays, I can say that the training towards the mastery of the academe is of
equal importance to the development of learners who has the capacity to think of
solutions to real-life problems. There were lots of learners who has the exemplary
academic training but lacks the ability to solve real-life problems. Students must learn
how to take social action on solving real problems such as environmental problems,
hunger, inflation and inequality which are very rampant nowadays.

Teachers should be the catalyst to these reforms, one must be a model to

his/her learners. Social reconstruction must be taken into consideration to address
these emerging societal problems. We may deal the social issues into our learners
through dialogue and inquiry. Lastly, we can also utilize community-based learning or
even bring the world into the classroom. Let them engage, let them think critically and
let them explore!
