Specific Enthalpy

For a homogenous substance of a

constant composition, the phase
rule tells us that two intensive
properties must be fixed to specify
the state of the fluid completely.
F = 2 – π + N

Latent Heats
 Experimental values are available for latent heats at selected
temperature, for many substances. However, data are not always
available at the temperature of interest.
 Hence, approximate methods are used for estimations of the heat
effect accompanying a phase change.

Pc = critical pressure in bars

Tn = Absolute temperature of the normal boiling point

Example for Water
Tn = 100 0C = 373.15 K
Pc = 22.06 Mpa =  220.5 bar
R = 8.314 J/mol.K
Tc = 647.1 K

From Table A-3: ∆H = 2257kJ/kg = 2257J/g

The error is <5%; 3.4%

Standard Heat of Reaction
Example

Solution
Standard Heat of Combustion

Only few formation reactions are carried out, hence many standard
heats of formation come from standard heat of combustion

For organic compounds made up of carbon, hydrogen,

and oxygen only, the products are carbon dioxide and
water, but the state of the water may be either vapor or
liquid.
