The geometric volume of the swash plate pump depends on the diameter and stroke of the
pistons, as well as their number. The angle of inclination of the swash plate and the diameter
of the piston pitch circle diameter determine the value of the piston stroke and hence the
pump geometric volume. When the swash plate inclination angle is constant, the pump
geometric volume is constant, and the pump in this case is known as a fixed-displacement
swash plate pump. On the other hand, variable geometric volume swash plate pumps are
those pumps which are equipped with control systems that are used to vary the swash plate
inclination angle during pump rotation and thus vary the pump delivery flow rate at constant
Variable geometric volume swash plate axial piston pumps have the advantages of
compactness, high specific power, relatively low cost and good static and dynamic
characteristics. On the other hand they are disadvantaged by their high sensitivity to oil
