President’s Message

And just like that it was autumn!
Looking outside its partly cloudy, a little breezy, and
56o. Pretty nice for a mid-October day. Which leads me
to an apology. Normally, our fall newsletter comes out
in September – so for those of you expecting it then, I’m
sorry this is later. Our annual meeting was postponed
until August 29th, and we wanted to wait until after that
for the newsletter, and well…time slipped away until
now.
We held our annual meeting outdoors on August 29th,
2020 at the Sinclair Lewis Park shelter so that we could
be sure to properly social distance and in hopes of a bet-
ter turnout. We weren’t disappointed regarding atten-
dance. It was slightly down from previous years, but
not as significantly as it could have been.
Not everything went as planned. Our speaker was to be
DNR Conservation Officer Caleb, however, the night
before he communicated to me that he was called to
service down the in cities to help with civil unrest and
wouldn’t make it. We were able to take care of busi-
ness, however, and we’ll look forward to Caleb’s visit
and remarks some other time.
Our budget was presented and approved, you’ll find that
elsewhere in this newsletter, and a review of last years
activities was offered. Those activities included the
usual vegetation survey/permit/treatment process for
Curly Leaf Pondweed (only 4+ acres this year); no carp
removal due to poor ice conditions; no walleye stocking
due to effects of COVID on the DNR staffing; donation
of picnic tables and signs to the beach and boat-landing
areas, respectively, in the park; and a completion of the
handoff of the sirens to Birchdale township; to highlight
a few things.
One of the last orders of business was elections, and I’m
happy to say that 3 new board members volunteered
prior to the meeting and were elected unanimously.

There was one more member “voted in” at the meeting,
but since that time declined the position. So that you
can become more aware of who your neighbors are that
are serving, we’re going to try to highlight at least one
board member in each edition. In this edition, we’ll be
talking about two board members:
Rick Jennissen – a long-time member who is stepping
down at the end of his current term as Treasurer, and
Tyler Shepard – one of our new members.
We want to sincerely thank Rick for his years of service.
As mentioned he has done an amazing, and reliable job
as our Treasurer. Rick will be truly missed.
Fortunately, another currently serving board member,
Rand Willhite, has volunteered to take the position and
has been working with Rick on what is sure to be a
smooth transition. We are grateful to Rand as well, for
stepping up to see there is continuity in this position.
Tyler Shepard, as noted previously, is one of our newly
elected board members. Choosing to dive in the
involvement pool head-first, Tyler volunteered to transi-
tion into the role of President effective after the next
annual meeting. One of the best ways to get involved
and informed quickly is to take on a leadership role in
an organization such as ours. So we thank Tyler for his
commitment, and look forward to the next chapter of
BSLA under his leadership.
For many reasons, most of us would like to pretend that
2020 didn’t happen, and I hope that you all are safe and
healthy and will stay that way. We know that eventual-
ly, this, too, will pass and we’ll get back a more routine
life. Hopefully, we’ll get back to having our 2021
BSLA Annual Meeting on Memorial Day weekend like
we have for so many years.
Until then, stay safe and care for and be kind to all
others more than you think they deserve, giving them a
reason to do the same.
Eventually, the world

husband Jared along with their two

Pug). His parents – Mom, Patty and
Dad, Jerry - live in Holmen,
Wisconsin. He attended Winona
State University to get his under-
graduate degree in Business
Teaching, and adds Minnesota
School of Business (MBA/IT
Management) and University of
Minnesota Twin Cities (K-12
Principal Licensure) for graduate
school.

improvement, games, traveling,
family, providing tech support,
photography, boating, car and
