Essay 1
There will be 900 students in the class of 2021. Why should you be one of them?
To quote psychologist, Thomas Gilovich, “We are the sum-total of our experiences.” My experiences have
made me focused, empathetic, urged a constant quest to improve and initiate a positive impact in my
environment.
I am a passionate and committed individual who constantly adds value to my team’s growth and enhance
the group outcome to increase the overall efficiency of the project. Being employed with Atkins, I started
out as a 2D RC detailer for structural steel design of Hinkley Nuclear Power Plant project. Due to my
technical prowess and strong work ethic, I showed exceptional efficiency of completing the RC drawings
in 1.5 days as against 3 days required by other detailers. I eventually trained other detailers to increase
their efficiency with flawless deliverables. Due to exceptional deliverables and my eagerness to improve,
within a year I was promoted to the role of a checker and then subsequently to a Team Reviewer. The
novelty of the progression lied in the pace in which it occurred. During my tenure as the Overseer,
auditing a number drawings, I realized the critical areas where automation was required to reduce manual
labour. Upon brainstorming with the team for possible solutions and collaboration with a team of
programmers lead to creation of Rebar Check tool thus reducing drudgery and I was rewarded a badge of
honour. I was also awarded badge of honour from my team for my proactiveness in training new recruits
and problem solving.
I distinctly remember joining the Samarpana club during college which bolstered martyr families in an
attempt to make meaningful contribution to the society. I continued the same spirit by taking part in
activities such as Teach for India initiative to help the under privileged during the weekends as a part of
the CSR club in my Organisation. Under ISB’s Leadership Summit, I plan to facilitate workshops by
eminent practitioners supporting Teach for India initiative with my peers to collaborate to outside our
professional realms.
My mother always emphasised on adding salt while cooking as she believed that the right amount of it
would bring a balance in the delicacy. At ISB, I wish to essay the role of salt, lending balance to the
diverse pool. Through my unique experience in Civil Design Consulting for 2 years, I hope to bring a fresh
perspective to my class to deliberate on collaborating to make India a lighthouse for other emerging
economies.
Essay 2
What will you be doing in 2025 and 2030? How will the ISB PGP programme help you to achieve
these goals?
My short term goal after MBA is to embrace Project Management roles in the real estate sector, manage
initiation, planning, execution, regulation and closure along with guiding a project team’s operations
towards achieving goals within the set scope, time, quality and budget standards. Emerging, I intend to
lead business verticals in design consultancies where I would look into the functioning of multiple cross
functional projects.
Since the past 2 years, I’m employed with Atkins, a design consultancy as a Graduate Engineer. Wherein
I started out as a detailer then progressed to becoming a reviewer, I have gained technical expertise and
experience in managing diverse structural detailing teams for various work packages in Hinkley Nuclear
Power Plant project. But I have always felt stimulated and inspired during discussions on business
strategy with my project manager. I believe projects vary in the construction industry in terms of
complexity and scope so there is no single recipe to become a successful project manager. But if there
was one, it would contain equal parts strategy, tactics, and team management. So far, I have experience
in managing and developing team specific operation strategies but now I would like to delve into the
nuances of broader strategic management governing business decisions which serves as the key
attribute required to become a successful project manager.
After extensive research and detailed conversations with alumnus, I believe that the ISB PGP program
with specialization in Strategy and Leadership is an ideal platform to gain in-depth knowledge of
principles behind strategic management of projects which would help me land project management roles
in design, engineering and project management consultancies. If given a chance, I am keen to be a part
of SREI Infrastructure Club which would help to connect with alumnus working in construction companies
whose domain expertise would help foster a steep learning curve. Keeping my long term goal in mind, I
would also like to be part of the consulting club. The Functional Champion Model is an appealing
opportunity for me to learn from peers who have considerably more experiential pedagogy in similar
fields. Mentor-Mentee model is also an exciting prospect for me to learn from alumnus, hailing from
reputed consulting firms.
Renowned for its stellar faculty, world class learning environment and thriving student life, ISB is the ideal
platform to achieve my goals, and I promise to be an alumni worth having if given the opportunity.
