Prevention of coronary events
Decrease in Triglycerides Protections against MI & stroke for clients who have diabetes mellitus
Increase in HDL Increasing HDL levels
Prevention in clients w. normal LDL

Complications Medication Administration


Cataract development, rash, memory loss, headache & Oral only
other GI effects
Myopathy, muscle aches, pain & tenderness
Hepatotoxicity, liver function

Contraindications/Precautions
Contraindication: clients w. liver disorder, atorvastatin
including pregnancy & lacation Nursing Interventions
Precaution: children <8, history of liver disorder,
alcoholism, & renal disorders Monitor myopathy
Measure CK if muscle pain
occurs
Monitor liver function test
Interactions
Fibrates & ezetimibe increase the risk of myopathy & liver & kidney
injury
Meds that suppress erythromycin & ketoxonazole (CYP3A4) & HIV
protease inhibitors can increase blood levels of some statins
Grapefruit juice suppresses CYP3A4 can increase levels of statins

Document HDL,LDL & triglyceride
levels
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Document liver & kidney function
tests
Report muscle aches, pains &
tenderness
Inform provider of all meds. in
current use
