Setting realistic goals is necessary to get where you want to be in life. In this essay I will

discuss a few goals I have set for myself to achieve before graduation. This semester, I intend to

get involved on campus and make friends. Before graduation, I hope to make good grades, learn

at least one new language, and study abroad at least once.

Although I’ve already made a few friends, I hope to make new friends because none of

my friends from high school went to UNCC, and life on campus would be boring without

friends. It is also important to have friends in college because college is stressful and fellow

students can support each other. I plan to do this by meeting other students through social media

or through my current friends. I also hope to make new friends through student involvement

events and club activities.

I want to get involved in a few clubs this semester and go to campus events because they

make college life more interesting and I can meet new people. Being involved in clubs will also

be great for my resume, especially leadership positions. They will also help me expand my

horizons, and maybe find some new interests. Not only that, but clubs can help me learn a few

things outside of class. I intend to go to a few first meetings this semester and find out more

about clubs I may possibly be interested in. If I really like a certain one, I may stick with it for

the rest of my college career.

I also hope to maintain a high GPA throughout all 4 years that I’m enrolled at UNCC.

Maintaining good grades is important to me because I am paying a lot for my education and I

want to get my money’s worth. I also need to get good grades so that I can get a well-paying job.
I plan to do this by prioritizing my studies over my social life and my job. If I put my best effort

into my assignments and work hard, I will be able to achieve this goal.

My major is International Studies with a concentration in Russian, which requires that I

become proficient in Russian. Therefore, I intend to learn at least one foreign language during

my time at UNCC. However, I’ve always enjoyed learning new languages and learning about

other cultures, and I would like to learn more than just Russian. I also hope to learn Japanese and

maybe become more proficient than I currently am at French and Spanish. I will achieve these

goals by taking language courses to fulfill my elective requirement and possibly double

majoring in Japanese.

Studying abroad will be a very beneficial experience for me, especially because my major

is International Studies. I will most likely study in Russia because my major concentrates on

Russian. This will benefit me because I will get to experience Russian culture firsthand and I will

be immersed in the language, which is very important if I intend to become fluent. I hope to

study abroad more than once because there are many other places I would like to visit before I

graduate. Studying abroad will also help me expand my horizons and learn more about the

world.

Being a freshman in college is a big change for most people, and it is important to have

goals in order to succeed. I plan to make new friends and get involved with student led activities

and organizations on campus. I also want to learn a new language and maybe use it when I study

abroad. Most importantly, I will make good grades by working hard and prioritizing my

education. These are a few of the goals that I will achieve before I graduate.
