325 Homework Assignment 6

only one problems due Tuesday, November 1 at 5pm, Latrobe 212

1. A beam has dimensions b = 10 inches, d = 17.5 inches, h = 20 inches, and fy = fyt = 60

ksi, f'c = 4 ksi. The moment is Mu = 1300 kip-in. The required reinforcement is As =
1.49 in2 and we will use three No. 7 rebars (near the bottom of the beam). We will
use the standard 1.5 inch cover as in Example 5.1 in the notes, page 55. Note that in
the notes we used No. 3 stirrups instead of No. 4 stirrups. Therefore, we need to use
a 0.5 inch diameter and Atr = 2(area of No. 4) for the stirrups. We also use
lightweight aggregate, so λ = 1.3.

(a) Find the required development length of the rebar. The maximum spacing of the
stirrups is s = 7 inches.

(b) Suppose there is not enough room to put a straight rebar in the beam. Find the
required development length of a hooked rebar. Be sure to specify the required
spacing of the stirrups. Check to make sure the hook will fit in the beam in the
vertical direction with 1.5 inch cover on the top.

(c) The spacing of the stirrups in part (b) is much smaller than the 7 inches used in
part (a). Using the smaller spacing of the stirrups, recalculate the required
development length in part (a) and compare the result with part (b).
