our university for giving us this opportunity to experiences what we have learnt in practicall.i
feel to pass my deepest gratitude for our advisors Mr. Abiy and Mr. zelaleme and to our
supervisor Mr. Tamriu Tesfaye for them valuable comment and guidance. And we would like to
thanks the company’s workers especially who are in design and lathe room for their unreserved
effort to show us anything that is important. Finally I would like to appreciate all person whom I
did not mentioned their name here but who helped me in any sort towards completing this
internship program.
Executive summery
The report shows that the detail about the internship program in HMMBI.It is a part of federal
democratic republic of Ethiopia metal and engineering corporation .it is located in Addis Ababa
lideta kifle- ketma, kebele07, around Mexico square and it covers an area of 97,025 square
meters with expense of birr82,000,000,00 .HMMBI industry includes five factories which are
precision machine factory ,mechanical subsystem factory, machine building factory, machine
heat treatment and engineering factory and conventional factory .this shop has different rooms
as design room, lathe machine room, milling machine room, quality control room and material
preparation room. HMMBI mission is to satisfy the country growing development demands in
public. The core business area is to design and construct manufacturing .it’s main products are
industrial machineries, spare parts ,bolts and nut(M6toM16),engraving & pressing products,
vehicles parts, farm machinery parts ,molds, dies punches, fixtures ,torque converter ,gear box
e.t.c

I entered the company by finding a place for internship program when I finish 3 rd year 1st
semester and have an answer after a week start practice at October 14, 2013.I was assigned in
conventional factory of HMMBI .I try to see different section of conventional shop like design
room, lathe machine room, milling machine room, quality control room and material
preparation room. The task that I performed in by starting from design room in this room I try
to see how to draw different models that are brought in the shop by using Catia Software and
practice how to write a technology. And in lathe machine room I was doing with the workers in
the manufacturing process .then by observing the problems that with my team members from
bdu we try to design electrical induction furnace for avoiding the wastage of the company and
to resolve problems that while doing complicated parts which are done in machining process
and to replace them by casting process and to use metals that are rejected to avoid wastage .I
had industrial visit at akaki which helps me for my project .then I listed some problems like lack
of skilled labor ,poor material handling ,no maintenances schedule for the machines ,no
calculation carried out while doing technology and I gave some possible solutions which are not
beyond my capacity the recommendations that I gave are to give training to develop
awareness for the workers about material handling and safety ,to prepare maintenances
schedule for machine and give suggestion about writing the technology the calculations carried
out .

The last chapter concerns about the overall benefits of the company during the internship
program .this chapter covers the how I develop my practical skill and try to combine what I
been learnt theoretical knowledge with practical knowledge in terms of upgrading practical
skill. I have developed a team playing skills while working with the company workers and with
my team members and know how to play my rule as a team mate .and also I have tried to see
how to manage as good leader and how to treat workers in order to make the company
successful and the characteristics of a good leader for instances to have a vision, have good
attitude for the workers and initiates workers to do more and so. And in terms of
communication skill I become interactive with peoples and learn how to work with them and
also I develop work ethics that one worker must perform.
Chapter 1
1.1brief history
Hibret machine manufacturing and machine building industry is a part of federal democratic
republic of Ethiopia metal and engineering corporation .the industry is located in Addis Ababa,
Lideta kifle –ketama, Kebele 07, around Mexico Square and it covers an area of 97,025 square
meters. The industry was established between the agreement of our country and the
Czechoslovakian government here in Addis in 1945 E.C at an estimated cost of birr 2,
000,000,00.It was expanded in1977E.C with the expense of birr 82,000,000,00. . It is one of the
leading companies of the corporation. This Hebert manufacturing and machine building
industry is an organization working by the name of tools and spare parts of design and
manufacturing of under the defense industries about 90% of spare parts , military tools,
farming equipments construction materials and others this industry has a product capability,
manufacturing capability, training capability, and design capability and also has a capable of
inventory resource, human resource and finance resource. Hibert manufacturing and machine
building industry includes the five factories that are run by the governmental military
organization called METEC. Other different factories are also found in different part of the
country. These factories found in HMMBI are:

1.4.1 Conventional machine factory

As an introduction to the subsequent discussions of production systems of the conventional


manufacturing factory are capabilities of producing many different kinds of spare parts in a
series of value adding manufacturing processes converting the raw materials into more useful
forms and eventually finished products. Let us see the basic means of manufacturing systems
model as value as adding process the process transforms raw materials and semi
manufacturing articles(inputs) to finished products or goods of a higher value
(output).concerning with the basic mechanisms and tools used in carrying out this
transformations are the production systems and manufacturing and equipment involved in
the physical flow and transformation of materials the employees involved in the manufacturing
operations.

The production system is performing the capacity of producing good type of goods and
products particularly. So this factory contains the machines like lathe machines, drilling
machines, grinding machines, sheering in particular. It is a process type of production system.
The work done here is similar to that of Precision Manufacturing Factory but it doesn’t have
precision machines of CNC type. The products produced are:

 Military tools and spare parts


 Industrial machineries parts
 Sugar factory spare parts
 Construction machineries parts and other

1.4.2. Precision machine factory

It consists of different CNC machines that do more complex precise works. Precise work up to
0.001um, the products produced in this factory are:

Vehicles and trucks spare parts


Molds, dies, punches, jigs, and fixtures
Farm machineries and other huge parts and the conventional accessories finished

1.4.3. Mechanical subsystem factory

Make bolts and nuts of different diameter, up to M6-M16, produces by mass with standard
sizes
1.4.4. Machine heat treatment and engineering factory

As the name indicates medals and badges are made in this factory along with different signs
and writings. The products are produced by engraving and pressing, heat treatment, and
surface treatment

1.4.5. Machine building industry

Is a new factory currently working on:-

 A small scale building machineries


 Vehicles and trucks spare parts
 Farm machineries
 Construction and industrial machineries
 Upgrading of the machines to CNC

The main objective of the company is to produce different types of ammunition of simple
bullet, wood work and metal and badges, and tools and spare parts. And it’s specific objective
of the company are:-

1. To design, manufacture, erect and commission manufacturing industries;


2. To engage in maintenance and overhauling of manufacturing industries;
3. To expand and enhance engineering and technological capabilities through creating
partnership for the interpreneship for the integration and interfacing   industrial
resources;  
4. To expand and enhance engineering and technological capabilities through creating

5. To undertake production, manufacturing, maintenance, overhauling and upgrading of
weapons, equipment and parts useful to defense and security forces for combat and
war operations;
6. To sell its products of weapons, equipment and parts to domestic and overseas buyers
in conformity with the law;
7. To build technological capabilities of the country’s defense force through identifying
existing and potential needs based on research and development.
8. In line with directives and policy guidelines issued by the Ministry of Finance and
Economic Development aimed at ensuring macroeconomic stability, to sell and pledge
bonds and so negotiate and sign loan agreements with local and international finance
sources;
9. To engage in any other related activities necessary for the attainment of its purposes.  

Before the current name given as hibret manufacturing and machine building industry, it was
described by different time frame by different groups. The names of the industry were :his
majesty H/silassie Ammunition factory ,Addis machine tools factory ,Addis metal pressing
enterprise ,tools and spare parts of design and manufacturing center ,Addis engineering center
and hibret machine tools engineering complex respectively.

This organization passed through different situations of administration, Addis metal pressings
enterprise was established by the council of ministers regulations then by the council of federal
democratic republic of Ethiopian government regular meeting held and the Addis metal
pressing enterprise completely restructured ,and will shifted to defense of minster of the
country. This was provoked by the federal Negarit Gazeta 11th year No 39 under the heading
council of minster regulation. According to this order the main body of the factory i.e.
ammunition product equipments, machine, and e.t.c were transferred to hormat ammunition
engineering factory. The remaining workshops in the organizations are: tools and spare parts,
medal and badges and metal and products packing products workshops. Finally the defense
industries coordination office decides, since December, 2000 E.C.The industry re-structured
itself with a new name, hibret machine tool engineering complex by applying new management
system.

Hibret manufacturing and machine building industry (HMMBI) developed and implemented a
quality management system (QMS) in order to document the industry’s best business practices,
and better satisfy the requirements and expectations of its customers and improve the overall
management system. The vision of the industry covered for the provision and supply of
industry products/services and this quality manual seeks to address those requirements.

1. HMMBI mission is to satisfy the country’s growing development demands in the public
as well as private area by vigorously and innovatively designing, building and integrating
manufacturing industries.
2. Producing high value spare parts, machineries, industrial equipments and vehicles
geared towards meeting the country’s mounting needs in construction, agriculture,
transportation as well as other sectors.

2. Internship experience

2.1 How do I get into the company

When I finish 3rd year first semester I try to get a place where I spend the internship in different
place around addis in different places but I was not succesful but finally Ifind ahope that they
will accept me they told me that they will tell me after one week and at last I was able to find
at hibret manfacturing and mandchine building industry around mexico .then I submit the
internship document and start practice at october 14,2013.

2.2 section of the company I have been working


There are five factories in hibert manfacturing and machine buliding industry .these are
machine building factory,mechanical subsystem factory,precision machinary factoryand
conventional factory in which I was working the 4 month apparentship program .conventional
factories contain different shops like design room,lathe room ,milling room ,material
preparation room and quality control room.

2.2.1 design room


Design room is a room in which different tasks are performed starting from drawing models
that are needed by the customers or for different purpose and tecnology are also written
here.drawings are drawen by using catia software. CATIA SOFTWARE boosts the capacity for
innovation in companies of all sizes across many industries by delivering 3D cad design
solutions powered by the 3D experiences platforms. So the company uses the CATIA SOFTWARE
in order to make different kind of drawings (2d or 3d). And the next task that is executed is
technology writing. Technology is a flow chart attached with the drawing to show the steps that
are done in the during machine operation and indicate the operational description, feed, speed,
planned time (set up, machining time and total time). In the technology we see each steps done
by the machinist in the right order though the machinist will perform the operation by the
procedure in which is in the technology. Technology make easier to understand the drawing
easily and makes the step brief.
2.2.2 Lathe machine room
Lathe machine room is a room in which a machining process is done. Lathe machine is a
traditional machine. In this room there are almost 60 lathe machine .in lathe machine room
different products are manufactured by performing different operation like turning, Facing
,internal and external thread ,groove ,learning ,chamfer ,drilling ,tapering for satisfying the
customer interest. They use different instruments like v.caliper,pich gage different cutters
depending upon their use .
2.2.3 Milling machine room
Milling machine room is a room having different milling machines this room contains around 23
milling machine. In this room there are vertical, horizontal and universal milling machine. There
are six motion found in milling machine right, left, up, down and vertical and horizontal.
Operation performed in this shop are gear teeth profile, flat surfaces and drilling (making holes
on the surfaces).
2.2.4 Material preparation room
Material preparation room is a room in which materials are distributed by considering the
product that is asked and needed for the given work piece. This room is responsible for
delivering the needed material.

2.2.5 Quality control room


Quality control room is very important section of the company in order to keep the quality of
the products that are produced in the industry and to satisfy the need of the customer and also
to avoid ambiguity .it is a section in which skilled operators approve or reject the work pieces
by using different type of instruments (v.caliper, pitch gage, trade gage, micrometer) by
comparing the technology with the product produced. After evaluating the product if it well
done it will be transferred to store but if it is not and the error is minor it will be done again as
rework but if it can’t be done it will be rejected

2.3 Tasks that I performed
The task that I performed starting from the first day of internship program while in the
beginning I were in design for almost one month in this room I were practicing to do drawing
for the samples that are ordered by using Catia Software as mentioned above Catia Software is
the simplest for doing 2d or 3d I try to draw spring, shafts, nut, bolt and different spare parts.
The second thing that I develop in this room is that I know how to write a technology. The
model of writing a technology is listed above .the technology tells how the machinists must
perform the operation and the steps that they have to perform during in the machining
process. So it will be easy to understand for the machinist by combining it with the drawing.

The other task that I performed was in lathe. In the time that I spend in lathe machine I try to
know more about lathe machine and its parts and the operations executed there. Try to work
with the workers like facing, turning, drilling, chamfer, and also thread
The other task that I perform in this internship program was by observing the problems in the
company with my team members we try to design melting furnaces in order to avoid wastage
of the company and to resolve problem while doing complicated parts by machining process
.we observe that they may spend 2 month for doing one work piece and at this time there is a
high wastage of metal so by considering this we think that replacing this by casting would be a
better idea and we write a proposal for having permission to do this and they were willing and
give us permission for us to it. Then we start our work after we get the answer we think that
first we have to visit akaki the sister company so we asked our supervisor to have a permission
to visit the sister company akaki which help us to know more about the project that we are
going to do. Then after we had permission we visit the akaki industrial company. We had
industrial visit which help us to know more about the project about designing of melting
electrical furnaces .in the visit I try to see more about furnaces with different melting capacity
volume and casting process which I learnt lately in course of casting and how to make a mold
and pattern .and materials used for this process and the type sand that they use like silica sand
and cromite sand with a high density and I see how they use the sand for casting purpose and
the process that they use to make the sand clean in order for making the mold .and they use
additives(ferromanganize,ferrocrominium,carbon graphite),Rankin and catalyst for the casting
process.

2.5 How good the work is performed


While I am performing the apparent ship program I try my best to acquire and to show my
dedication and need to know about the working environment I try to show them

 Always I begin the day with a new working environment


 Always I try to be punctual
 I inspire myself to know new things
 Try to create good working environment with the coworker
2.6 challenges on work
During the internship program there were challenges that I face

 First when I start the internship program the place that I were assigned to work have
no place to for internship students and nobody was willing to show me what to do or
what they were doing in the room
 And the second challenge that I face is it was not that much easy to understand the
working environment and the rule of the company which is the most important for me
to stay in the company
 To be social comfortable with the workers
 Mainly it was hard for me to think that I am one of the member of the company and to
accept myself like them
 And also the starting time for work is 01:30local time so that I have to wake up early so
it was also challenging

2.6 Measures taken to overcome these challenges


I was trying to do what is right and necessary during this internship program to get what I
should know this time so I measures that I take are listed below

 The first thing was to ask our supervisor to have a place in the room and I ask him to give
me to show me what is done in the room and he assign me a place with one of the works
and tell her to show me
 The second measure I take was to know the rule of the company by asking and try to
implement it to show my respect and need to work
 Then I start to work on myself to believe where I am and to know that I am the member of
the company till I spend the 4 month
 Also developing my social skill around the workers and try to create a good working
 I also set my time and be punctual during this time

Unit three

Overall benefits of the internship

3.1 improving your practical skills


Improving practical skill need to be supported with practical work so when I was in this
company that I mentioned above it has different rooms that so by doing practically in lathe
machine and milling machine and in the Catia Software I try to know how work is executed here
.during this time I try to combine the theoretical knowledge that I learned the past 3 years with
the practical knowledge. It create for me a great opportunity to see that I couldn’t find in my
campus and give me a hint that how I should see the theoretical knowledge with the practical
one. Basically improving practical skills is made from participating in every of the activities
performed or done.

During this internship program I have improved my practical skill in terms of digging out the
problems that company faced as well as giving the solution for the problems that I gained from
the company and also by working together with factories workers and the quality control, the
maintenance group, the store room, design and development with them made it confident.

3.2improving theoretical knowledge


The internship program will lead me to know more about what I was doing and it initiate me
to develop my theoretical knowledge in order to know more about what I was doing and what I
have been learnt lately and its scope. In this company I develop the knowledge that I know in
theory with the participating in operational system of the company as well as in the factory’s
working condition in design and development, in quality control, store system, and also in
maintenance activity besides this I gathered the relevant information which is important to
understand the theory for practical application.

In addition to this I was able to develop my theoretical knowledge when I was trying to see
things practically I would find different questions that are not answered by the workers that will
create confusion and ambiguity that will lead you to read more while in this situation you might
have a chance to develop your theoretical knowledge.

3.3 interpersonal communication skills

Interpersonal communication skills are the tools we use to let others know what we think, feel,
need and want. And they are how we let others know that we understand what they think, feel,
need and want.

Even those who are individual contributors in the workplace need to be able to communicate
effectively with bosses and customers. Most people have colleagues with whom they need to
communicate in order to be successful at their job. Every one of us has her/his own preferred
style of communicating with others. In addition, given our unique histories, we have different
strategies for communicating in different types of situations. As a result, there is a very real
possibility that when two of us get together there are certain circumstances in which we are
less effective at communicating with each other than we would like. By increasing your
repertoire of interpersonal communication skills, you can increase your overall effectiveness
and perhaps your job satisfaction.

Active listening or assertive communications are two examples of interpersonal


communication skills. In addition, there are techniques for certain circumstances, such as
communicating in difficult situations or communicating upwards, which can be useful. While
when I was in the company I try to listen more and try to see from the person perspective in
order to make the working environment preferable.

3.4 improving team playing skills

Team playing skill improvement is one of the most challenging management, motivation,
training, rewarding, etc through improving team cohesion and skills, managers and team
leaders can build a better rapport with the team members and increases team performances.
Team skills improvement depends on how these categories are managed and how well people
skills are trained and used within team environment.

Team skills improvement refers to good decision are made when right questions are asked, you
need to learn to conduct productivity conservation with your employees during the team
member meeting. Right questions are asked only if people feel comfortable and relaxed and
never think of their advantages .productive team meeting can built through conducting
productive conservations with employees. In the time that I spend the internship program we
have a team working together in that team we all were trying to contribute the things that are
expected from us in all any situation that we were and we try to develop the team playing skill
and also if there was any situation that expose us to do with the workers as a team it was the
same for us to show our team playing skill.

3.5 improving leadership skills

The role of leadership and supervision in American business is gaining increasing recognition.
Just as society looks for a leader to define its purpose and lead it forward, business is concerned
with the selection and development of people who can successfully invent, make, sell and
provide services to set their enterprise apart from its competition and solve the many
perplexing problems that confront them.
One fundamental change in the strategy of managing in today's environment is the concept of
coaching rather than managing. Many businesses have rightly redesigned their work flow
around processes. These processes enable the creation of process teams, in other words, a
person or group responsible for an entire business process. Team supervision, commonly
referred to as coaching, and demands more education than training. During this internship I try
to see how a successful leader can manage his workers in the company in order to make the
company successful and to initiate workers to do their work effectively.

3.6 work ethics skills

Work ethic is a value based on hard work and diligence. It is also a belief in the moral benefit of
work and its ability to enhance character. An example would be the Protestant work ethic. A
work ethic may include being reliable, having initiative, or pursuing new skills.

Workers exhibiting a good work ethic in theory should be selected for better positions, more
responsibility and ultimately promotion. Workers who fail to exhibit a good work ethic may be
regarded as failing to provide fair value for the wage the employer is paying them and should
not be promoted or placed in positions of greater responsibility. In this time we try to develop
our work ethics because the company has strict rules that we must respect the rule of the
company. Work ethics that I develop in the internship program are:

3.7 entrepreneurship skills

Entrepreneurs are people who are able to find or create new ideas and affect the overall
condition of the global economy. If one person want to start new things she/he have to have
good knowledge, self confidences, courage and love because if we don’t have all this we might
not be able to create things .during this internship program we had a chance to work together
with them by the project that we started induction electrical furnace they were grateful to have
us in the company and give us a certificate to approve that.

3.8 problem identification

Problems that I see in the company in the period of internship in conventional shop in different
rooms are listed below:

 In design room there is no enough computers and sit so the employees can’t perform
their task as expected from them and even for the internship students can’t practice
like it is needed and they are not able to develop their knowledge like there is no
internet access
 In design room we also notice that they is lack of skilled labor due to this reason
when they are doing technology the calculations carried out by guess like machining
time,feed,speed and so on
 Poor material handling is also the problem in this company, every workers in the
company doesn’t have their own material by not handling properly so when they are
doing they will borrow from others and this will take time
 No maintenances schedule the machine will not be repaired periodically unless some
failure occur and there are many machines which are not working
 Lack of proper store in the company which is small and doesn’t have enough space to
even for transporting heavy products
 Improper machine installation ,most machines in this company doesn’t have
foundation and cover
 Due to their marketing system material are not find in the time.

3.9 measures to overcome these problems


Since most problems are beyond our capacity to solve, so I try to give recommendations about
them. Some of the recommendations are have found acceptances and some are not and they
are trying to implement what I have suggested

The measures taken are:-

 I recommend that they should give training to develop awareness for the workers
about material handling and safety
 To prepare maintenances schedule to keep the machine safety without any failure
happened in the machines
 I suggest that they have to use when they are doing technology from engineering
perspective they have to calculate feed, speed and machining time

Conclusion

In HMMBI lot of mechanical applications are implemented .during in my stay in this company I
me understand more and develop my practical skill, my communication skill with people at
working place, creativity knowledge about own business, my management skill about lead the
workers, work ethics and relating theoretical knowledge with practical.

conventional factory is the place where that I have been working .in this factory I try to see
each rooms and I observe problems and face challenges and try to solve problems which are
beyond my capacity. Above all thing I develop many skills in terms of communication skills,
leadership skill, team working skill and incorporating the practical knowledge with the
theoretical one.

Recommendation
My recommendation to the company should set a place for internship students which let them
to know more about what are they doing and in order to accomplish their task successfully

In design room they have to do the analysis part by the appropriate calculation before filling the
technology distributed to the machinists or to the technical operators.

In this company there are many machines which are not working so they must resolve this
problem which lead to mass production that facilitate for the productivity of the company.
