PART I INTRNSHIP REPORT
CHAPTER ONE
Background of the Company
Amhara Metal Industry and Machine Technology Development
Enterprise(AMIMTDE) was established in 1985 by the name of
Bahir Dar Rural Technology Promotion center with the aim of
multiplying of and popularizing agricultural implements, rural
industry development and rural energy development team.
Currently the Enterprise is starting to manufacture different types of
technological products by the two existed well organized workshops
found at Bahir Dar and Kombolcha city (Amhara region).
The General objective of the enterprise is to full fill the gaps of
Agricultural technologies encountered the small folder farmers for
increasing production and productivity of the Agricultural products.
Services given by the company

Counseling and training services

Installation, commissioning and maintenance services
Machine specification preparation
Spare parts production and selling
Metal and machine technology manufacturing and selling
CHAPTER TWO
Over All Internship Experiences
The internship program helps us:
To develop the practical knowledge that we have learned
theoretically in the university training program.
In addition, we have gained the following benefits
Entrepreneurship skills.
Improving of Practical skills.
Up grading of theoretical knowledge.
Interpersonal communication skills.
Leadership skills and Teamwork skills.
Work ethics.
Section of The Company We Have Involved
we have been working under the work shop and design team;
why because, when the managers grouped in different
sections they give this team. Therefore, we are participating
in work shop and design team.

Engineering Methods Used by The Technicians
All work tasks are performed according the standard instruction
manuals formulated by Company. And these guidelines contain
many mechanical engineering methods and techniques. Some of
the mechanical engineering techniques and methods are:
Benchmarking (prepare standard), Equipment Utilization,
Information and data flow diagramming, Modeling and Testing,
Project management, Time Studies, Work Sampling Tools.
The tools that we have been used are: - Caliper, Meter,
Adjustable wrench, Open wrench, screw driver and so on.
Major Challenges and Problems We Faced

The challenges and problems that we have faced during intern

practice are: -
The great challenge was corona virus which affect customers
coming to the company so there is small or no work most of
the time, it also affects us by reducing our working time from
four months to two months.
And there was great problem in money shortage because our
university send money after we work almost one month.
Lack of computer access to do individual task.
Limitation of workers to tell full information about the
machine.
Conclusion and Recommendation
Conclusion
Internship program has great importance in order to create
educated as well as entrepreneur man power. This importance is
not only experience in technical aspect, but also in social
communication and reaction, developing taking responsibility,
experience of leadership and team work and like.
Recommendation
We would like to give valuable recommendation for the company;
to fulfill the necessary safeties for internship students, to be
willing to give information about the company except secrets, and
to fulfill enough instruments and measurements.
PART II PROJECT WORK
CHAPTER THREE
Design of Motorized Maize Shelling Machine
Summary of the project

Maize shelling is the removal of maize seeds from the cob.

This operation can be carried out in the field or at the storage
environment. Maize shelling therefore is an important step
towards the processing of maize to its various finished
products like flour. The different methods of maize shelling
can be categorized based on various mechanization technology
used. These includes: hand-tool technology, and engine power
technology. Hand tool technology uses manual power and this
leads to labor drudgery and gives small output than motorized
technology. In view of this, we less or more develop motorized
maize sheller.
Introduction
A Maize Sheller is a hand-held device or a piece of machinery to
shell Maize kernels off the cob for feeding to livestock or for
other uses. Maize Sheller’s can be powered by a hand crank, a
tractor, a stationary engine, or by an electric motor. Whole maize
cobs are fed in. They are pulled between two toothed wheels,
usually made of metal. Each wheel spins the opposite direction of
the other. The teeth pull the kernels off the cob until there are no
kernels left. The kernels fallout through a screen into a container
(such as a bucket) placed underneath the machine. The cob is
then ejected out, since it cannot pass through the screen.
Objectives
General Objectives
The main objectives of this project is to design motorized
Maize shelling machine to overcome the traditional method.
Specific Objectives
To construct a structure to fit all accessories to it with proper
moving attachments.
Design of shelling shaft.
To design threshing shaft.
To reduce the hard work.
To reduced time to shell the Maize.
Literature
A. Hand Shelling
The easiest traditional system for shelling maize is to press the
thumbs on the grains in order to detach them from the ears.
Another simple and common shelling method is to rub two ears
of maize against each other.
B. Threshing with Animals
If draught animals are available and there are large
quantities of maize, threshing can be done by driving the
animals.
Cont. …
C. Maize-Shelling with Hand-Operated Machines
Manual shellers, which are relatively common and sometimes made by
local, permit easier and faster shelling of ears of maize. These come in
several models, some of them equipped to take a motor; they are
generally driven by a handle or a pedal. Use of manual shellers
generally requires only one worker.
D. Power Operated Sheller
Engine powered technology involves the use of mechanical assistance
in shelling the maize. To facilitate speedy shelling of maize in order to
reduce postharvest deterioration, mechanical Sheller’s are
recommended, because hand shelling methods cannot support
commercialized shelling
Methodology

To construct working drawing

To select optimum motion for threshing and shelling
operation.
To design a frame to sustain all these accessories and all
loads developed by it.
To design shaft for shelling operation to run shelling
operation smoothly.
To design belt drive and pulley system for threshing and
shelling operation.
Design of shaft for threshing operation.
Components of Motorized Maize Sheller
Frame: The frame was made up of mild steel. The Sheller
unit was fixed to this framework. The frame has a bottom set,
stand, and flywheel
Cylinder: It is made up of high carbon steel having
adjustable metal pegs/ spikes which are placed at equally
spaced rows which rotate along the cylinder and separate
grains from the cobs.
Hooper: The hopper was fabricated in trapezoidal shape,
using mild steel. It is placed on the outer casing for feeding the
maize cobs.
Cont. …
Outer Cover: It was made up of mild steel sheet and
was bent to semicircular shape and was rigidly fixed to
give protection to the cylinder and to avoid grains spilling
out. It has a provision for attaching to hopper.
Shaft: Shaft is used for transmit power from motor to pulley
Dc motor: A simple dc motor is used for drive the shaft of
stationary pulley.
Concave:
Belt, pulley and bearing
Design Results

Conclusion and Recommendation
Conclusion
Having tested the performance of the fabricated machine, it could
be concluded that, The machine is able to remove the tedious
parts of operation involved in hand shelling and manually.
Recommendation
The following recommendations are given for improvement:
I. Addition of wheels to enhance the movement, and
transportation.
ii. Diesel engine can be incorporated to increase the efficiency of
the machine.
