Literature Review

Background
Washing clothes is one of the household chores in human society and it is endless. Until
the mechanical washing tools come in for domestic uses, the way people wash the clothes didn’t
change. Washing machine are considered to be one of the greatest inventions for women from
their endless chores of washing clothes. Rubbing and flexing the cloth to break away the solids
and the detergent is necessary to penetrate for washing clothes. Before washing machine, the
clothes are used to be pounded or rubbed with rocks at the river. After some times, a corrugated
washing board was developed. But after all the washing machine invention it only the to press
the button or buttons and laundry will done after some amount of time without using any
manpower. And people can do other chores while washing the clothes. The earliest washing
machines were made out of wood which made them to difficult for heating the water. Later they
are made out of metal so that the fire can be burnt below the wash tub to keep the water warm
during washing. It was a separate process to remove soap and water from clothing after washing
as, the soaking wet clothing would be formed into a roll and twisted by hands so as 8 to extract
water. Even though, there was a washing machine it needed more attention unlike the current
machinery.
Research Object
The key project objectives are to study:
 Washing machine
 Washing machine AND water consumption
 Washing machine AND energy efficient heating element
 Washing machine AND energy efficiency
 Top Loading washing machine
 Front Loading washing machine
 Washing machine AND its detergent
The resulting goals are to survey the usage of washing machine and its function using Survey
Monkey app and telephone interview.
The final objective is to study the latest development in washing machine and its function.

Firstly, I chose the washing machine brand for my project which is Panasonic washing
machine. After that since there is other student who is also working on Panasonic brand then
decided to go for top loading washing machine and he took front loading washing machine. After
that I created questionnaires with my professor with SurveyMonkey application to create survey.
Then collect more information necessary by surfing through the internet and making telephone
interview to the Panasonic showroom. On the internet I mostly search about washing machine
history and about heating elements by surfing through the internet on Google Scholar, Firefox,
Bing, Baidu and Yahoo.

SurveyMonkey Results
The charts below are the answers of the online surveys questions which are collected by
using SurveyMonkey application. During collection data throught SurveyMonkey total 23 people
respond and answer the questions.
Do you have washing machine?

For the question “Do you have washing machine?”, 29 people respond “Yes” and none of
the people answer “No”. In converting percentage, 100% of the people who respond to the
survey say “Yes” and 0% of the people say “No”.
What is your gender?
For the question “What is your gender?”, 22 people answer “Male” and 1 people answer
“Female”. In converting to the percentage, 95.65% of the people who respond to the survey are
male and the other 4.35% is female.
Choose your age group.
For the question “Choose your age group”, 1 people who reponds to the survey answer
“Under 18”, 19 people who respond to the survey answer “18-24”, 1 people answer “25-34” and
the other 2 people who respond to the survey are “45-54”. In percent conveting, 4.35% of the
people who respond the survey were “Under 18”, 82.61% of the people were “18-24”, 4.35% of
the people were “25-34”, 8.7% of the people were “45-54”.
Which washing machine brands do you use?
For the questions “Which washing macine brands do you use?”, 23 out of 4 people who
respond to my survey answer “LG”, 10 people answer “ Samsung”, 7 people answer
“Panasonic”, 2 people answer “Media”, 1 people answer “Bosch”, 1 people answer “Siemens”.
In percent converting, 17.39% of the people answer “LG”, 43.48% of the people answer
“Samsung”, 30.43% of the people answer “Panasonic”, 8.7% of the people answer “Bosch”and
the rest of the 4.35% of the people answer “Siemens”.
What kind of detergents do you use?
For the question “What kind of detergent do you use?”, 20 people who respond to the
survey answer “Liquid” and “Powder”, 21.74% of the people answer “Capsule” and 26.09% of
the people answer “Tablet”. In percent converting, 86.96% of the people who respond to the
survey answer “Liquid” and “Powder”, 21.74% of the people answer “Capsule” and the other
26.09% of the people answer “Tablet”
How much liter of water do you usually use in washing machine?
For the question “How much liter of water do you usually use in washing machine?”, 2
people who respond to the survey answer “40-50 L”, 2 people answer “50-60 L”, 7 people
answer “60-70 L”, 9 people answer “70-80 L” and 3 people answer “80+ L”.In percent
converting, 8.7% people who respond to the survey answer “40-50 L”, 8.7% people answer “50-
60 L”, 30.43% people answer “60-70 L”, 39.13% people answer “70-80 L” and 13.04% people
answer “80+ L”.

Discussion
• By learning the washing machine water consumption, will be able to lower than energy
and time cost as low as possible.
• By learning the top loading and side loading washing machine make me able to
understand what their advantages and disadvantages.
• 4 types of detergents tablet, capsule, powder, and liquid types. Tablet and capsule are not
suitable with most of the washing machine detergent drawer.
• Thermal fuse is used as the heating element in the washing machine to get the mixture of
water and detergent and in dryer to dry clothes to get the desired temperature.
Conclusion
• Washing machine and its history, water and energy consumption were researched.
• Able to learn top loading and side loading washing machine advantages and
disadvantages.
• In my opinion liquid detergent are best due to their smell after washing clothes and they
are able to use easily in detergent drawer.
