Universitas Negeri Padang. This research is aimed to know the contribution government and
societies in Belibis, air tawar barat. for maintaining the water pollution on gangga river. gangga
River is a river in belibis which has crowded area on its river flow region. The research location
is in gangga river flow region, especially in belibis air tawar barat. Data in this research were
obtained through field research and library research . The field research was carried out by
using interview guidance and observation, whereas the library research was done by
documentary study by collecting data from various sources. the results of the study showed that
the condition of the Ganges River contained pollutants and various surrounding debris which
caused the river to not function properly, causing water pollution in the river.

Introduction

Water is the source of life, not only for humans, other living things also need water. the
lack of water in the human body can cause dehydration because the resistance of the human
body is very dependent on various water functions while the human body has not developed a
water storage system as a fat storage system. Water is one of the components needed by human
life. According to Kodoatie (2008), "Water is the source of life for all beings who need water,
for that reason. The availability of water in terms of quality and quantity is absolutely
necessary".

Water on earth is very abundant especially in Indonesia, this is because Indonesia is an

archipelago. However, this is not used properly by the people of Indonesia. Conversely, most
people abuse this advantage so that damage to water is commonly called water pollution

Air pollution is the presence of one or more physical substance, chemical, or biological
atmospheric quantities that could endanger human health, animals, and plants, interfere with the
aesthetics and comfort, or property damage. Air pollution can be caused by natural sources and
human activities. Some definitions of physical disturbances such as noise, heat, radiation or
light pollution is considered as air pollution. The nature of air pollution impacts may be direct
and local, regional, and global levels.
Air is an important factor in life, but with increasing physical development and town centers of
industry, air quality has changed. The air that was once fresh is now dry and dirty. This if not
immediately addressed, these changes can be harmful to human health, animal and plant life.
Air pollution is defined as the presence of substances or foreign substances in the air that causes
the change in the (composition) of air from its normal state. The presence of a foreign substance
or substances in the air in a certain amount and be in the air in a long time, will be able to
interfere with human life. When such a situation occurs then the air is said to have been
contaminated. Based on Government Regulation No.. 41 of 1999 on Control of Air Pollution, is
the air pollution is the inclusion or dimaksuknya substances, energy and / or other components
into the ambient air by human activities so that the ambient air quality decreases to a certain
level which causes ambient air does not fulfill its function.

It has been realized together, the current air quality has become a global issue, because the air
has been polluted by human activities and natural processes. Entry of contaminants into the air
can be quite naturally, such as forest fire smoke, caused by volcanoes, meteorites and dust
emission of sea salt; also largely caused by human activity, for example due to the activity of
transport, industry, waste disposal, either due to decomposition or burning and household
activities

Based on research, the purpose of writing this report is as follows:

1)Knowing the notion of water pollution.

2)Knowing the causes of water pollution.

3)Knowing the impact of water pollution.

4)Explain efforts to tackle water pollution.

This report is expected to have benefits from various parties:

1)So that the writer and reader understand how important water needs for life.

2)To find out what causes, impacts, and efforts of water pollution prevention
METHOD

The research method used is to check ,interview, and evaluate. observers immediately
observe the environment around the river by walking the river as far as 50 meters then observe
the attitude of the surrounding community during the observation process. then an assessment of
the check is done with an indicator of whether there are plants that live there, if there are
animals that live around there, whether there is garbage in the river, whether the river emits a
stinging smell, whether the river is cloudy, whether the river is clogged, is polluted in the river
waste. From the data, it can be concluded that the research is qualitative.

FINDING

At this time, we make observations about pollution of the river happened in an environment
Universitas Negeri Padang, specifically in Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni.

From the observations made, we find the following data:

From the pictures in the above mentioned above, can be seen a plastic waste floating on the
surface of the river. Despite the crap that is on the river not too much, but it is one of the factors
that caused the river polluted.
in the second photo, can be seen the presence of a type of algae that live in the River, but the
dark-colored algae.

in this photo, seen the presence of MOSS in the bottom of the river. The river is not too deep.
However existing Moss looks not living with either, it's definitely caused by the condition of the
already polluted river water.
In addition to plants, there are still animals that live in the river. Animals living in the form of
small fish, snails, insects and some water.
In conducting the observation, we did an interview with a student from Fakultas Bahasa dan
Seni, in this interview, we asked a few things. Which were the cause of the pollution of the
River, who is responsible for the pollution as well as how to cope with the pollution of the river.

DISCUSSION

Environment pollution is a worldwide problem and its potential to influence the health
of human populations is great, Pollution reaches its most serious proportions in the densely
settled urban-industrial centers of the more developed countries, In poor countries of the
world more than 80% polluted water have been used for irrigation

with only seventy to eighty percent food and living security in industrial urban and semi
urban areas. Industry, clustered in urban and semi-urban areas surrounded by densely
populated, low-income localities, continues to pollute the environment with impunity. Over
the last three decades there has been increasing global concern over the public health impacts
attributed to environmental pollution.,Human exposure to pollution is believed to be more
intense now than at any other time in human existence. Pollution can be made by human
activity and by natural forces as well.

The water we drink are essential ingredients for our wellbeing and a healthy life.
Unfortunately polluted water and air are common throughout the world. The WHO states
that one sixth of the world’s population, approximately 1.1 billion people do not have access
to safe water and 2.4 billion lack basic sanitation . Polluted water consists of Industrial
discharged effluents, sewage water, rain water pollution and polluted by agriculture or
households cause damage to human

health or the environment. This water pollution affects the health and quality of soils and
vegetation . Some water pollution effects are recognized ,immediately, whereas others don’t
show up for months or years . Estimation indicates that more than fifty countries of the world
with an area of twenty million hectares area are treated with polluted or partially treated
polluted water . including parts of all continents and this poor quality water causes health
hazard and death of human being, aquatic life and also disturbs the production of different
crops . In fact, the effects of water pollution are said to be the leading cause of death for
humans across the globe, moreover, water pollution affects our oceans, lakes, rivers, and
drinking water, making it a widespread and global concern .

A drinking water contained a fluoride content ranging from 5.26 to 26.32 milligrams per
liter and this is too high as compared to the World Health Organization’s standard of 0.6 to
1.7 milligram per liter . According to Ashraf et al (2010).

A. The Nature of Water Pollution

Water covers more than two thirds of the earth's surface. Approximately only 3% is fresh water,
and many are frozen as polar ice. Fresh water from lakes, rivers and ground water is only about
0.1% of all water on earth. Fresh water is a source of water for plants, animals, humans and
other organisms. This fresh water is also our waste disposal site. Without careful treatment, the
waste makes water unsuitable for other living needs, for example for drinking water.

The water on this earth has never been in a pure clean state, but there are always other
compounds or minerals that are dissolved in it. This does not mean that all the water on this
earth has been polluted. For example, water taken from mountain and rainwater sources. Both
can be considered as clean water, but the compounds or minerals contained in it are different.

Besides that water often also contains bacteria or other microorganisms. Water containing
bacteria or microorganisms cannot be directly consumed by humans but must be processed or
cooked first so that bacteria and microorganisms die. At certain limits drinking water is
expected to contain minerals so that the water feels fresh. Pure water without minerals is
actually not tasty to drink.

Based on the description above it can be understood that water is polluted if the water has
deviated from its normal state.

B. Pollution of microorganisms in water

Some bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and parasites often pollute the water. These germs enter the
water from household waste and waste from livestock, hospital, agricultural land and so on.
Pollution from germs is a major cause of disease in infected people.

Diseases caused by This water pollution is called water-borne disease and is often found in
typhus, cholera, and dysentery.
C. Water Pollution

1. Source of Water Pollution

Many causes of water pollution but generally can be categorized as sources of direct and
indirect contaminants. Direct sources include effluent coming out of the industry, TPA (Final
Waste Disposal Site), and so on. Indirect sources are contaminants that enter the body of water
from the soil, ground water, or the atmosphere in the form of rain. Soil and groundwater contain
containing residues from agricultural activities such as fertilizers and pesticides. Contaminants
from the atmosphere also come from human activities, namely air pollution which produces
acid rain.

2. Classification of Water Pollution

Water pollutants can be classified as organic, inorganic, radioactive, and acid / base. Today
nearly 10 million chemicals have been known to humans, and nearly 100,000 chemicals have
been used commercially. Most of the rest of the chemical is discharged into the body of water or
ground water. Pesticides, detergents, PCBs, and PCPs (polychlorinated phenols) are one
example. Pesticides are used in agriculture, forestry and households. PCB, although it has been
rarely used in new tools, is still found in old electronic devices as insulators, PCP can be found
as a wood preservative, and detergent is widely used as a cleaning agent in households.

Among the many water pollutants that are toxic and dangerous and can cause death. Water
pollutants include heavy metals such as arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), beryllium (Be), Boron (B),
copper (Cu), fluorine (F), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), there are carbon
oxides (CO and CO2), nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2), sulfur oxides (SO2 and SO3), H2S,
cyanide acids ( HCN), chloride ions, solid particulates such as asbestos, soil / mud, compounds
hydrocarbons such as methane and hexane. These pollutants are found in water, some are in the
form of solutions in the form of particulates, which enter through food ingredients which are
carried into the digestion or through the skin.

3. The Impact of Water Pollution for Humans

Water pollution greatly affects human life in this case its health. Water pollution brings a lot of
diseases even epidemics to humans. And this happens very often in Indonesia, because of the
floods many children who lack clean water as a result they suffer from jaundice, and many other
types of diseases are suffered they are.
Things caused by water pollution include:

a. The absence of clean drinking water

b. When there is a flood, water sources and wells are covered by dirty water and even garbage
carried by floods. As a result, residents or communities cannot use the facility.

CONCLUSION

Based on the analysis and discussion of the research that has been presented above can be said

the research had occurred at the site of a decrease in the quality of the environment, so that it

can be summed up as follows, first, the impact of pollution on health environment environment

the Ganges River greatly influences the function of both biotic abiotic component,

environmental and social. Many organism life, animals and plants that become damaged or dead

because of the pollution. Residents who lived in the River Ganges vulnerable exposed to disease

due to harmful substances that the body found in the river water. The water of the Ganges has

already polluted water that is marked with the taste, smell and color, change the water

temperature, there are large deposits of microorganisms, there is didalamnnya. Water wells

residents do not qualify as clean water as there are levels of nitrates and high manga that are

harmful to the body when consumed continuously. The pollution caused by indiscriminate

waste disposal and the disposal of liquid waste. Therefore as a society that lives mostly in there

and let the dump in place and plant trees along the River to filter dirty air.

The role of local governments in addressing the impact of water pollution on health
environment in the River Ganges, namely building a waste management Installation (IPAL)
Communal, PUBLIC speaking, public wells, program execution times NET (prokasih) and give
dissemination and outreach – outreach about the environment. Nevertheless the role local
governments actively to tackle the impact of water pollution on health environment of citizens
is still lacking.
