Experiment No. 8
1. Theory:
A comparator as its name implies, compare a signal voltage on one input of an op-amp
with a known voltage called reference voltage on the other input. In its simplest form, it is
nothing more than an open loop op-amp with two analog inputs and a digital output. The
output may be (+) or (-) saturation voltage, depending on which input is larger.
Comparators are used in circuit such as digital interfacing. Schmitt trigger, discriminators,
voltage level detector and oscillator
2. Circuit Diagram:
3. Procedure/Program:
a) First insert all part without considering their values (for example, place a
resistor without considering the resistance value of it etc.)
b) Make the necessary rotation for the parts, and move the parts to appropriate
location.
c) Make sure all necessary wire connections.
d) Mark the nodes you are interested in with labels.
e) Set the values for all the parts, for example, the resistance value of resistor, the
width (W) and length (L) of the transistor, etc.
f) Design NMOS and PMOS transistor.
g) Setup analysis to tell SPICE what you need (transient analysis or DC sweep,
etc.)
h) Run the simulation.
i) Observe the simulation results (trace of signals) in OrCAD Pspice A/D Demo.
4. Simulation Results:
6. Conclusion
The time response of inverting and non-inverting comparator is simulated using Pspice
software and verified.
