OVERVIEW

A space to dwell is everyone’s physiological need as per Maslow’s hierarchy of needs

theory[ CITATION Sau20 \l 2057 ], but there is a difference in choosing a dwelling place and adapting
a given place. As per census given in 2010 around 864,550 families don’t have a choice to reside
rather than staying beside a shore though they contribute 1% to GDP[ CITATION CMF10 \l 2057 ], for
others this would be an adventure to stay for a day or two but for them it is a requisite with the whiff
and hubbub caused by waves but still with the introvert nature they earn their bread with the smile on
their countenance responding to the individual who are eager towards their craft wishing their
descendant will work in different zone.

The credence has also played a critical role in the lives of mankind and how impedimenta switches or
coagulates within the range of place where religious personalities dwell is what make a settlement
quirky and the functions which they grasp changes the habitat for human race. For many of us it may
sound mindless to give importance to locale but with the expansion of mechanization the need for
science has also made an impact around. The impact has also played a vital role in the facet they
ornament to the style they subsist.

A flake of land adjoining by the aqua creates an excursionist’s place which ushers trade along with
aesthetical values and the involved mankind in commerce had sorted a distinctive style of living by
fabricating their own habitat to earn bread for them and their ménage. Each household had grappled
for a long to reach present-day scenario where they had creates an aura which is very bidding for the
visitant. The land caught eye of many entrepreneurs across nation to ponder upon well-being of
residents and visitors. The economy circulation for such place is also dependent on one another’s
lifestyle.

The flexibility of the working ambience provided or originated by the locals in their own habitual
spaces and how the hierarchy in social status makes the vital difference in space selected by the
human kind and shape of work they intricate in.

Though it is located in South Goa, Majorda is beautiful attraction because of its religious heritage
churches where it has been believed that the power of healing is present which centric around the ring
which Jesus wore, Socks are being booked by people, who believed that there is a power in the socks
which have been wore by infant Jesus statue. A wide range of ornamented statue temples and
aromatic spice plantations at Ponda1.

Habitat refers to environmental space where living creature dwell in. As per ‘Our World in Data’
2019 survey 71% of total 510 km 2 earth’s surface which is 104 km 2 habitable lands which was less
than 4% if we rewind 1000 years.[CITATION Han19 \l 2057 ]

Majorda presents a calm environment with lush green and clean habitat for the dweller who wishes to
spend some quality time afar from busiest cities. The trade aspects for this region depend on tourism,
local craft and fishing. Some locals have transformed their dwelling units to homestays, restaurants,
cafés, bars, vehicle rentals and petrol sellers. The locals are dependent upon tourists and their
neighbours for the individual economic generation whereas fishermen work for monthly basis who are

immigrant from Karnataka. The youth goans work in North for whereas spiritual golden agers are
happy in living in south around the churches where mass is being organised every day. Goans have an
urge to serve tourists with utmost hospitality and believes that the rise in crime is because of in-filters.
The vernacular is strong enough in materials or in styles. The colours are bright enough whereas
religious places are kept in white retaining Portuguese style. Priest had an urge to retain similar style
as he was searching for similar builder.

Tourism being main centric resource with mining contributes economy of the town. Resource has
fixed position where the user travel reaches to the resource from across the globe. Fishing is being
another major resource while traditional boat making has been shifted to dock years back.

We will look into major factors associated with the resource and settlement in Majorda.

RESOURCE

The prominent aspects on which the state is

backed by are some of these which are listed
below:

i) Agriculture

4
MAJORDA AR 410: SEMINAR INDIAN HABITAT 2019-20

One of the important aspects in economic generation is agriculture industry in Goa. Approximately
1200 sq km of total 1400 sq km is taken care by government of Goa and remaining 200 Sq km is
possessed by public. Goa is constant producer of rice and coconut. In monsoon from June to
September paddy is cultivated.

ii) Mining

Before 1961 under Portuguese rule mining was started in Goa. The Japanese has surveyed mineral
prospectors in Goa and found ore of iron, bauxite and manganese and in Western Ghats of the hilly
region. The government of colonial has provided mining leases of 336. Meanwhile in 19 th December
1961, Goa got liberal from the colonial government.

iii) Tourism

Goa offers various values to various people north keeps its pace to merge with cities whereas south is
known for its peaceful and calm nature for the dwellers. North consists of hostel and hotels but in
south it homestay are large in number. The densely populated area along upper part of Goa which is
evenly distributed horizontally when traveller moves towards south. [ CITATION Gov20 \l 2057 ]

However, town like Majorda which is located near the water resource which has attracted visitors for
adventure and simultaneously brings calm with the antique kirks established in Portuguese era turned
became more popular with the chronicles associated with it such that infant Jesus has visited. The
power of credence had major role in the settlement nearby that has religious place is being opened
daily and people across the globe has booked only for the stuff which is being said as possessed with
healing powers. The settled amalgamation of white with browns is also brings trade and opportunities
for entrepreneurs. However, the economy is majorly dependent on tourisms, agriculture and fish
farming.

INTERDEPENDENCY

The resources are centric to natural aqua to antique kirks which have Portuguese essence and the
circulation and dependency is processed by which the habitat sustained. Locals are highly dependent
on agriculture and some on kirks as this place is flooded with kirks with every mile away, white
coated holy structures. Piscators are temporary though but the settlement will stay for long and
occupied by the other migrants due taxes imposed by the government. The density of the resources is
depicted by the number of filled circles and the dependency of locals is being shown by placing above
visitors. Here the tourisms referred to the entire establishment from homestay to dormitory services
and from cafés to shacks.

PISCATOR’s

Figure 3: Parched

The fish being the important part of nosh or we can say vice versa since the site is much
closer to ocean. The piscators2 make sure that they fulfil the supply needs of the town.
Around 50 piscators settlements that begin their task before they can even see dusk and
finishes off much early before commercial opens their shutter. The choice of the settlement is
limited to the area near shore so that they won’t cover larger length covered with weights in
their process. Sadly the settlement isn’t permanent and workers were migrated from
Karnataka and change their location before a year ends because of the taxes imposed by the
authorities. Piscators were called worker since they work under an owner who gave they
daily wages and brings in supplier to spread products in market.

2
Fishermen

8
MAJORDA AR 410: SEMINAR INDIAN HABITAT 2019-20

The whole family is involved in the process; men start this by going into waters sailing upon
the crests with fingers crossed so that the money spends on the diesel won’t be used in vain.
They were days when they arrived empty handed on the shore whereas they were also those
delightful times where they cannot even lift them up. At shores wives waiting for their men
with baskets to fill it up and take them to their place or a place where they can sort them
identically based on visual feature. The process expands for dry fish by filling with sand salt
and allowing them to dry under a covered thin layered shelter to protect them from fowls.
The process of drying is repeated again next day once they were washed along the shore.
Meanwhile in afternoon men take rest while women sell their products caught by their men in
centres while children were sent to school. In evening when all get together along with the
whole neighbours, children spend this time playing outdoor sports meanwhile women has to
get back quickly to prepare dinner where all come together for dinner as a family and finish
off early so that next day men can easily wake up and being their work without any stress.

Figure 5: Piscator's habitat

The colossal growth in pisciculture 3 across nation has raised a demand for export industry but the
inadequate knowledge on sustainable fishing has made nation less expertise in export and need for
making a skilled catch is in high demand with a huge labour across nation, Moreover, the need for
healthy atmosphere for the piscators has also been a concern with quality habitual spaces at desired
location.

The construction being temporary with unstable materials which is the reflection of momentary stay
and background is further underprivileged. Bamboo and dry leaves with Blue coloured plastic sheet
which protects from rain water and dry helps in heat loss caused in harsh sunlight of coastal. The food
cooked on dry sticks out the habitat zone in summers and shifts inside in winters that keep the habitat
space much hotter but in contrary they need to keep their eyes wet. The orientation of the tiny habitats
are towards famous kirk located in colva 4 which is believed to have healing powers because of the
credence dwelling in old times. The dwelling habitat is also being backed by the space required for
parching and covered laying place with nets so that fowls may not take away the hard earned catch,
The place is also used to store sand salt in the same place.

PRACTISES

The next day is always considered as a new beginning as previous one doesn’t affect the current one.
So with curiosity, eagerness and with mixed emotions fishermen travels on crest in dark before dusk
using skills and experience to carry the burden of people and household needs to bring along the shore
in pleasant swing till the amalgamation of land and water and from their it is very tough to drag each
inch towards the dry land. Now the process of collecting and separation begins with removing from
the threads of net as they were also companied by their family members with baskets and travel to the
rocky land to distribute as per the usage of particular type. The separate procedure is followed by the
dry ones and others. The dry once are washed and filled with sand salt after removing unwanted
material inside the fish. Meanwhile children are sent to school after small breakfast which is cooked
by females outside the habitat space on sticks. Now after this is time for males to take rest and female
work around or sell in market place before gather together for commune dinner.[ CITATION MAD23 \l

INTERCONNECTION

The locations are oriented towards the resources which are further linked closely along the associated
habitat. The aqua is located closely with the piscators dwelling place and the need of owner is also
associated with both the links whereas the market place will be located adjacent to both the resources
to consume and circulate. The overlapping is the degree of association to the resources where market
place being the highest covered in the area to consume resource. The owners do connect with the
pisactors but number of blocks connected with the market place is large as compared to other
resources. The above diagram shows the white thin line which divides the location of habitat. The
resources which are connected with locations along orientation and zones. The blocks in the later
diagram shows the interlinking density of the resources with the habitat location overlapping with the
sources which creates a sense of dependency within the area. The colour coding used for above
diagram is also used same as for the below dependency degree diagram.

PRIME: OUR LADY MERCES

Map 4: Location

Our Lady Merces Chruch in colva has a major attraction to the surrounding because of its healing
power since it has been said that infant Jesus visited this place:

Chronicle I: In 1640, people found baby Jesus in colva waters and bought him to this church, later it
has become a place of healing for many.

Chronicle II: Some parish brought infant Jesus from Mozambique in 17 th century.

It was earlier known as Nossa Senhora de Merces Chruch built in colonia era, which was
commissioned in 1581 whereas founded in year 1630. The statue is predominate feature of this
church. The Fama of Menino, which is held every year’s third Monday of October. [ CITATION
Goa20 \l 2057 ]

A highest white structure facing colva waters had huge attraction around the world for small socks
wore by statue of infant Jesus. It is huge business where people book for these long back many say as
they possess healing powers which helps ladies to conceive who are unable to. There were times when
this statue is used to bring rain in the land where land haven’t seen a drop from dropping from the
cloud since months and healed leprosy in place called padrigalum as said by Mr. Joao Furtado.

16
MAJORDA AR 410: SEMINAR INDIAN HABITAT 2019-20

This church is surrounded by a primary and a senior secondary school which was built by Catholics
and a cemetery across the road. The only church in surrounding where mass is held daily in morning.
The beautiful white carved elements of the structure has many things to appreciate apart from the
healing powers that the structure is still retained on the old structure which was built by the
Portuguese and the priest is finding a builder who is able to expand the structure for large people with
similar structural elements. The curious element is that the funds which are being generated in church
are used for education. The inner courtyard space which divides the administration from other side of
entry to church. The cemetery is also located across the church road.

HABITAT I: PALMVIEW

The calm and peaceful habitat for the travellers abode is built in a
fashion to give a homely feel in strange land in context to visitors.
Peter Almeida, the owner and planer of this extra-terrestrial homestay
has kept it simple with contemporary style of architecture with bricks
and concrete with sustainable technology like solar panel which
generates hot water for the entire day in winters and electricity stored
in summers which was used when the supply turned away.

The lobby is synchronised with the surrounding site brings in the

greenery across the road accessed by which in turn is great
amalgamation of the scenic beauty of the in and out of the site which
is filled with shades of green and red acts as a shade for habitat brings
cool breeze in hot dry summer, a calm ambience is formed in the

became a gathering place for the westerns with 4 seating corner and later extended which upto 300
members with multi-cuisine, oriental and continental etc.. Now it has huge celebs following with the
fame. The palm view approached site has scenic view along the road with the circular seating makes
visually comfortable space for the chit chatters to dwell in. The corner do provides a badminton court
in the church premises which in turn raises the collection of youth in evenings. The dark black road
shines in the day and glares by night enhancing the cleanliness showcased by the street lights. The
single way approach road is sufficient to cater both way traffic with covered palm along the both side
of the road acts as a shade for the travellers meanwhile providing the visual scenic aesthetics in which
journey is never a boring one for the roamers or for the commuter with the additional effect of terrain.
The Swirl of light striking leaves and the shadow created by them is amazing to watch across on the
ground in morning and in evening which is the rational of building orientation. The colour has also
played vital role in reflecting the radiation caused by the sun in harsh coastal areas.
The material also procured from local area so that the cost of transportation may be minimized at the
utmost level in hierarchy.

DWELLING UNIT

The dwelling unit is designed in such a fashion that each sub unit of 15 feet by 10 feet can cater two
members though three can easily dwell, which has one washroom in sub unit. The whole unit
comprises of three floors in which bottom two are given for the commercial use the upper one is
occupied by the owner, The use of solar panel is efficient idea by the maker where the electricity
generated is being used when the supply turned away. The beautiful intent of using sustainable
materials and by using renewable energy sources is what makes a unique from the other dwelling
units while in the other hand to make the micro climate cooler and even the terrace garden on the
parapet plays an important role in making micro environment cool.

The sub units are equipped with the locally available furniture and faucets that makes the output more
economically viable. Constant rise in needs by the user has made the owner to think the other way to

Figure 12: Terrace

capture the customers since the economy is generated by the tourisms was one of the main sources.
The region is majorly occupied by the western and agers who wish to stay away from the fast moving
world. Moreover, the travellers wish to hire a two wheeler to roam in the town or for sight-seeing.
The owner(Peter Almeida) and his wife ‘Deota Almeida’ 60 years old who worked as a professor in
Anna University takes care of this property, it was glad to know that they were concern about the
national laws which were amended which shows the concern about the minorities apart from the
business even the number does not play any role. The family was much concerned about what they eat
so that they may be in good state but the mandatory lunch was fish curry with authenticate goan
cereals. Many believed that the rise in migration has shifted the crime rate in the area nearby majorly
in colva due to shacks business which creates a power among the owner to hold major part of area
aside shores.

SUSTAINBILITY

20
MAJORDA AR 410: SEMINAR INDIAN HABITAT 2019-20

The material and the technique use are quite interesting to watch along with the landscaping in site
and terrace area. The solar panel manages the hot water supply throughout the day whereas it has
potential to provide light and fan supply when the supply is taken off. The need of renewable energy
is the new age responsibility to create a healthy atmosphere to dependence with the sustainable
environment with lush green habitat using utmost renewable sources possible. The coloured material
used for finishing is also the wisely used in order to reflect the sun radiation to prevent heat gain in
coastal. The spaces are also used optimised as per need to both the owner and guests.

HABITAT II: HIRE Abode

Carlito’s mother owns this 180 Square meters antique habitat space, deep yellow coloured mud walls
with dust spread over across with minor interior lighting which consists of open kitchen. The cooking
fumes which are being released are carried out through main entrance door which strikes
visitors/customers visiting for rent a vehicle. Thatched roof with red slates turned in deep maroon
slightly deformed due to wind, water and material’s self-load which is being supported by the brick
column made much later for extension which created a space where they can sit during leisure time
with family friends under shade.

The essential resource are served at general stores which are again a home turned store or store which
is placed in front their habitat, since fish is being the predominate food is being served by the vendors
who come along on cycle or two-wheeler selling fish or any other essential products otherwise people
travel along street to get vegetables and other essential to main Colva centre.

The dweller showed utmost respect to their elderly parents where an incident supports this “I asked a
guy whether am I allowed to take a photograph of his dwelling unit who might be a Son or Son-in-law
who was sitting in front the dwelling habitat then he said ‘I need take permission from my mother’
and further he was only revelling information based on the approval from his approval” which shows

an immense admiration towards others and moreover it prove how strong are their basic principle
which intact as per Indian cultural values is concerned.

HABITAT III: ANJONA Bakery

A horizontal structure is said because you can capture total view from across the road present a
humbled habitat whereas the ingredients are severed inside is quite unique with versatile range of
bakery items and popular prawn patties and other quality stuffs. The evolution of this bakery is quite
interesting when in 1998, a seventeen years old boy named John fernandes started this at Betalbatim
cross roads which was quite familiar among locals and visitors for its fresh cakes, biscuits, cookies
and other bakery items expanded by John’s daughter Jovina Fernandes.

Red exterior with orange interiors presents an attractive space to gather where talks takes a leap over
vanishing time which in turn has become a gathering or meeting place for the nearby dwellers in
morning and evening time since the location is exactly opposite to post office which makes it more
predominant or valuable place. The lawn drags attention to gather in shade along the side where
people gaze on across road which carries back and forth and conversing on topics which came along
while gazing around. [ CITATION Tal20 \l 2057 ]

The products which are being sold are all homemade and moreover there are products which made
instantly when order is placed so people travel along to consume these products and owner travel
various other places to get raw materials to make these products. The frequency of both these chain
has major difference where consumer travel daily and has large foot count whereas owner travels once
in a week.

HABITAT IV: CHORIS stop

The red coloured Coca-Cola advertised set along the road which is linked from betalbatim to colva,
“Valanka fast food, very tasty sausage bread” house supports with orange tiny sand particles a
parking place planned though turned into waiting place since the set back is necessary at peak hour.
Valanka has an intense link in goan culinary. From past 32 years, valanka has been treating locals and
visitors with choris pao. There is a huge gathering for meaty conversation from 5:30 pm till the stock
is completely sold out.[ CITATION Fer12 \l 2057 ]

The only means which valanka earns for his family sole bread winner from delicious homemade
sausages that valanka showcased with bollywood stars advertised meaty sausages. A part time tiatrist
realised that he did not have strong economy background to take off commercially at a market place
whereas he brought the trade to his place by opening it at home in the extension front who hasn’t
forgotten his earthly attachment. It has been said that there were times when Tavares used go away for
hours in order to end the selling which was made for whole day. In early ages he managed to the
funds for wheels meal carrier from his family and friends and used travel near beach to win bread and
now he feels he is reaping what he has sown at struggling stage. While making this enterprise his
backbone was his wife Santana, this journey made his personal relationship stronger.

SCOPE

The competence in various habitats is substantial enough to make adaptive living atmosphere for
succeeding generation in order to ensure proper distribution of resources. The use sustainable
materials should leap along with the renewable energy sources. The piscators section need to be

curiously observed based on practises and culture so to enhance the living style with skilled and

technically catching exercise since the rate of annual catch is low compared globally where the
Norway being at top.[ CITATION Árn10 \l 2057 ] This is major area of concerned as we have a huge
human resource across the globe. The desired location for habitat is also a concern for piscators with
the stable roof that withstand or strong enough to protect them and their belonging at adverse climate
changes.

The rise of entrepreneurs investing their time in order to make visitors hanging up easy with
development in technology and resources, but the credence on them is not easy for such places with
the rise in crime and exploitation by the immigrants in the state. The increase in connecting network
of resources with sources is the need in this hour. The need of unified fares for hired vehicles is
necessary in order to prevent exploitation faced by visitors. The need for unified fares and connected
management for adventure sports is also necessary with demand of such activates being at top priority
for the visitors.

The obligation for the preservation of historic kirks and responsive adaption is major concerns for the
religious practioners. The need for using adaptive material is also necessary as the modernisation has
brought advance materials for advertising which are not necessarily sustainable. The connectivity in
dark is again a concern for the visitors as with scattered dwelling units it is tough to reach places. The
lane have a steep turns which is again concern for accidents as the roads are empty, so traveller are
also at pace while reaching places.

30
MAJORDA AR 410: SEMINAR INDIAN HABITAT 2019-20

CONCLUSION

The concoction of the Portuguese and Indian is bewildering to watch with the calm sense of shade
provided by the palms across the roads in the harsh coastal. The dwelling unit’s scattered unevenly
covered under lush green with vibrant colours seems a dream place to dwell away from the busiest
noises caused by traffic jams. The interdependency of the resources with the overlapped sources
majorly on tourism. The credence part is highly noticeable with the aesthetically pleasing holy coated
murals in the lawns of the heritage religious sites.

The coagulation of dwelling habitats around the centre makes the lane more vibrant in night whereas
others places being dark provides a sense of calmness with coldest temperature in nights and hottest in
noon. The circulation of economy is also an interesting factor which is based on visitors, but at the
time of plagues and calamities it would be interesting to notice the management procedure. The
credence part has brought up the similar believe people around as the rise in migrants is also equally
increasing with the attractive nature which flake of land produces which is backed by the natural aqua
in result raised another industry called pisciculture. A destination comes with adventure but the
exploitation is what needs to be minimized. The wise use of materials with lush vegetation in the site
and along is what needs to take back and it stays within the visitors. The traditional goan spices for
taste buds, with the calm sense backed by sound literature combining a heart of giving and inviting is
a treat to experience.

Hence, the scope to explore and to work in different zones combining exposure makes it more worthy.
The exploration is not limited to particular sources but it ranges from habitats to human values which
affects the overall aura of a particular location.
