The Importance of Flexibility in the Workplace

The facilitation of flexible working arrangements (FWAs) is one of the recent trends in

organizational culture which has resulted in flexibility in the workplace. Fundamentally,

workplace flexibility refers to the opportunity of employees to make decisions that influence

where, when, and for how long they undertake work-related duties (Bal & De Lange, 2014).

Latest technological advancements, for instance, have enabled many employees to work at any

time and from anywhere. Also, legislative and organizational changes in the labor sector have

increased opportunities for workers to capitalize on FWAs. Flexibility in the workplace not only

enables employees to realize job satisfaction by maintaining a work/life balance but also helps

employers to realize their corporate or business goals.

Workplace flexibility facilitates improved employee performance since it reduces their

work-life conflict. Flexible workers enjoy reduced stress levels, which enhances their

effectiveness at work. Employees under FWAs are more focused, attentive, and well-organized

than their counterparts in traditional work patterns. In essence, workplace flexibility enables

workers to realize a balance between their professional and personal lives. Flexibility in the

workplace, therefore, plays a key role in ensuring job satisfaction among employees so that they

can be more productive for organizational success.

Also, any organization that desires to excel in the marketplace must win in the workplace

by promoting FWAs. For the company to achieve profitability and realize other corporate

objectives, it needs to invest in a flexible workplace. People who work under rigid conditions

often end up being dissatisfied, thus leading to high employee turnovers or poor performance.

Firms that fail to ensure employee retention or those whose workers post poor performance

ultimately incur losses that may eventually lead to their collapse. Therefore, workplace flexibility

is important for employers to realize business profitability and gaining a competitive edge in the

market.

Workplace flexibility is vital since it allows both employers and employees to arrange for

a working environment that suits them. An employee that operates in a flexible workplace is

more likely to be satisfied with their job than one working in a rigid environment. Besides,

employers stand to realize profitability organizational growth by maintaining flexibility in the

workplace. Organizations should, therefore, strive to create a workplace where workers desire to

report for work and be more productive in their duties.
