6 - Forensic Chemistry :
7 -Forensic Pathology :
( 1 ) – Definition of Death :
♦- Complete and persistent cessation of respiration, circulation and CNS.
( 2 ) – Types of Death :
)A) - Somatic death (clinical death) This stage characterized by :
3
(B) - Molecular death (cellular death) This stage characterized by :
♦ - it is the period between the somatic death and the molecular death,
♦- it is flattening of the convex parts of the body on pressure or contact with a hard
object during the period of primary flaccidity due to loss of elasticity of muscle and skin

)D) - Eye changes :
1 - Reflexes: loss of corneal and pupillary light reflexes.
2 - Cornea: loss of lustre of cornea.
3 - Intra-ocular tension: drop of eye tension; anterior chamber is lost.
4 - Ophthalmoscopic exam : pale white papilla (empty vessels).
5 - Tache noir
Notes
♦ - Scleral discoloration Following death (from minutes to several hours),
♦ - the eyes may remain open and the exposed part of the cornea will dry, leaving a red-
♦- Duration of hypostasis
1 - hypostasis starts to be apparent on skin, 1-2 hour after death in the form of light violet
coloration which gradually deeper till it gets violet in few hours.
2 - It reaches maximum intensity (become fixed) after 8-12 hours when the blood is coagulated.
3 - The normal color of livor mortis (lividity) is purple.
4 - Red lividity can be caused by ( the cold, cyanide, and carbon monoxide )
5- Prior to fixation , the blood will redistribute to the new dependent if the body is moved.

1 - This man was found in this position the day after he died.
2 - His body was completely stiff.
3 - This stiffness (rigor mortis) begins in all muscles 1–2 hours after death
4 - when the environmental temperature is approximately 75°F.
5 - The body will be in complete rigor in 10–12 hours and remain stiff for another 24–36 hours
at the same environmental temperature.

( D ) - Decomposition or Putrefaction or secondry flaccidity
♦- it is post-mortem resolution of the soft tissues of the body after death
♦- Decomposition has two components :
1 - Autolysis
2 - Putrefaction.
Notes
1 - Autolysis :
♦- involves the body’s own enzymes acting on itself, causing tissue and cellular destruction
2 – Putrefaction :
♦- involves overgrowth of microorganisms (especially bacteria and fungi) which feed on
and break down the dead tissues.

( 1 ) - Hair
1 - The Hair is composed of three layers :
1 - The Cuticle
2 - The Cortex
3 - The Medulla
Hair Structure
Notes
1 - The structure of hair has been compared to that of a pencil with :
♦ - The medulla being the lead
12
( 1 ) - The Cuticle ( outer layer )
♦ - is the outer layer made of over-lapping scales that protect the inner layers of the hair.
♦ - The cuticle of a hair is the thin, translucent layer surrounding the shaft.
♦ - The cuticle consists of scales of hardened, keratinized tissue that vary from species to
species,
3 – Imbricate or “ flattened ”
● - Common in humans.
( 2 ) - Cortex
♦ - The cortex is the main body of the hair, composed of spindle-shaped cortical cells.
♦ - Contains pigment bodies, which contains the melanin (hair color) and cortical fusi.
♦ - Cortical fusi are air spaces of varying sizes found near the root of a mature human hair.
♦ - Pigment granules are small, dark, granulated structures that vary in size, color, and
the cortex.
13

Notes
2 - Medullary Shape :
● - Human hair => normally cylindrical
2 - Rabbits hair
1- Medulla is formed of several adjacent small cells in different shape.
2- Medulla is broad & may occupy most of the hair thickness with slight serration at the margin.
3 - Dogs hair
1- Cuticle is thin & irregular.
2- Cortex is thin & serrated with longitudinal & transverse striations.
3- Medulla occupies about 1/3 of total hair thickness and containing cells in the form of
spiral discs.
15
Root
1 - The root and other surrounding cells in the hair follicle provide the tools
necessary to produce hair and continue its growth.
2 - When pulled from the head , some translucent tissue surrounding the hair’s shaft near the
root may be found. This is called a follicular tag.
3 - By using DNA analysis on the follicular tag , the hair may be individualized.

( 1 ) – Pigmentation :
● - In Animal hair : is denser toward the medulla.
( 2 ) – The Medulla :
● - In Animals hair : the medulla is Thick , occupies of hair thickness ½ - 3/4
( 3 ) – The Cuticle :
● - In Animals hair : has serrated margins . ● - In Human hair : has regular margin .
( 4 ) – The Cortex :
● - In Animals hair : Thin and have longitudinal and transverse striations.
● - In Human hair : broad and form the whole thickness of the hair , has only
longitudinal striations

Collection of Hair Evidence
1 - The search for and collection of hair evidence should begin as soon as possible.
2 - Hair evidence is easily transferred to and from the crime scene.
3 - Collection should be done by hand if the location of the hair is important, which is usually
the case.
4 - Sticky tape and lint rollers may be used to assist.
5 - A special filtered vacuum cleaner may be used to collect hairs and fibers in masse from
carpet, bedding, etc.
Notes
1 - If the evidence is stuck to another object, the entire object should be packaged and labeled .
2 - Once collected, the hair evidence should be packaged into paper packets.
3 - If sticky tape or a lint roller are used, the entire surface used should be packed into a
Polyethylene storage bag – easy to see through, but with no direct contact.
4 - Control samples need to be collected from the victim, suspect, and other individuals who
could have left evidence at the scene. Take from all pertinent regions of the body.

1 - Natural fibers :
● - are derived in whole from animal or plant sources.
2 - Man-made fibers :
● - Synthetic fibers are produced solely from synthetic chemicals
21
( 2 ) - Fiber Evidence
1 - The quality of the fiber evidence depends on the ability of the criminalist to identify the
origin of the fiber or at least be able to narrow the possibilities to a limited number of sources.
2 - Obviously, if the examiner is presented with fabrics that can be exactly fitted together at their
torn edges, it is a virtual certainty that the fabrics were of common origin.
