6. BASIC DESIGN
6.1.4 REPLACE THE FIRST SENTENCE OF THIS CLAUSE BY:
Pumps with constant-speed drivers shall be capable of developing at least a 3 m (10 ft) or 5 percent
head increase (whichever is greater) at rated conditions, when a new impeller(s) (larger diameter)
and/or new diffuser(s) is installed. This criteria may not be met by special overbores of cases or
diffusers. Impeller diameters less than published minimum diameters are not acceptable.
6.1.6 ADD TO THIS CLAUSE:
Note: For variable speed applications the Pump Supplier is responsible for checking MAWP and shaft
horsepower ratings at maximum continuous speed.
6.1.7 ADD TO THIS CLAUSE:
The pump supplier is responsible for checking in all instances that the seal arrangement, axial thrust
load and bearing life is in compliance with this standard.

Pumps shall have stable head/capacity curves which continuously rise by at least 5 % from rated
capacity to shut-off. The gradient of the tangent to the curve shall continuously decrease from 125 %
of the best efficiency point to minimum continuous stable flow and shall remain positive. If parallel
operation is specified, the head rise from rated point to shutoff shall be at least 10 %.

Discharge orifice shall not be used as a means for providing continuous rise to shut-off. Unless
otherwise specified, head rise from rated flow to shut-off of more than 20% requires the approval of
