Higher vehicle taxes will

increase business costs

From Peter Yu

I disagree with one point in the let-

ter “Offer public transport subsi-
dies to help S’pore become car-lite”
(March 11), where the writer suggest-
ed raising taxes for private vehicles as
one alternative to reforming the public
transport fare structure.
The vehicle population on the roads
is controlled by the Certificate of En-
titlement system, and higher taxes
should not be used as a way to divert
people to public transport.
If taxes keep being raised, they will
drive up costs for the business com-
munity, which in turn, could affect
Singapore’s economy.
