JCI DAVAO INSTALLS 74TH PRESIDENT

I
n recent times, the global pandemic has
brought challenges to everyone worldwide.
The effects of it did not spare the members of
the chapter affecting their efficiency in holding
activities and community projects. There were
challenges in logistics, communication, and
commitment due to community restrictions.
Despite these conundrums, the year that was
was never a failure. The momentum the previous
Board of Directors has started is something the
incumbent will carry on.
However challenging, the terrors and
uncertainty of things did not waiver the burning
spirit of JCI Davao’s 74th President, MJ Oppus
as he braves the pandemic. Everyone knows
how the presidency can be very daunting and
demanding. On top of being the head of the

chapter, he is also a father to MJSon who turned
one on 24 November 2021, and the better half
of President Tara Oppus of JCI Kadayawan;
maintaining these roles with grit makes him a
great leader.
With his leadership, the 2022 Board of
Directors (BOD) has been very expeditious in its
effort to put things in order even before the start of
its term. The elected BOD is composed of unique
personalities from various fields of the profession
- sales and marketing, academe, construction,

The recent tragedy brought about by Typhoon Odette swept
shelters and livelihood to our brethren in Visayas and Mindanao.
The typhoon wreaked havoc and caused billions worth of
damages, and has taken even the most basic needs such as food
and water. However, the Filipino Resilience and Bayanihan never
fails, and took over the entire nation.
In response, JCI Davao President MJ Oppus, alongside
his Board of Directors, responded to the call of urgency and
Odette project. The Chairman of the project, Chapter Secretary
General Sherwin Dumago, was able to pool up to Php 50,000
for the purchase of 300-5 gallon water jugs. The purchase was a
necessary focus of resources as potable water remains unreliable
in Siargao up until now. Included as well in the efforts of JCI Davao
are used clothing, 100 food packs and a 1000-meter tarpaulin roll
which could provide temporary shelter for 100 families.
JCI Davao extends its deep gratitude for the monetary
donations collected from donors, most of which came from the
Davao Community and the JCI community around the country.
Our warm thank you for our fellow Jaycees in JCI Iloilo Ilang-ilang
and JCI Lipa for responding to the call of service to humanity.
Our snappy salute and thanks to our logistical partners for in-
kind donations, The Philippine Air Force and the Philippine Navy,
who immediately went out of their way to haul the donations into
their custody.

T
o be the prime chapter in the
Philippines is not an easy
feat. The organization must
have relentless determination and
focus in overcoming challenges
that make or break its success.
JCI Davao has proven itself to
be worthy of its accolades as it
has continuously maintained its
stature in braving the pandemic
and overcoming challenges to
effective community engagement
and involvement.
The chapter has remained
steadfast in upholding community
obligation and governance that
requires veracity and brilliance,
standards that assert its unanimity
with JCI’s mission. Its brotherhood
has helped uplift the lives of many
members of society by improving
their welfare. However challenging
it may have been in the years since
the pandemic started, JCI Davao
members have remained able to set
examples of genuine service to the
community.
COVID-19 – this is the most talked-
about nowadays whose impact
on communities has exponentially
affected the lives of people from all
walks of life. Its effect furthers the need
for community development. The
chapter felt the need for immediate
community support and has assisted
a number of barangays to fulfill their
basic needs such as food, medicine.

Despite health concerns,
movement restrictions, and limited
resources, the chapter has dedicated
its efforts to assisting vulnerable
groups such as low-income
households, children and young
people, women, and low-skilled
workers.

President MJ has been steadfast in
his executive duties ensuring that no stone
will be left unturned. The crucial trial of a
pandemic is that effective management of
the situation necessitates an extensive shift
in human behavior. When adoption to the
situation is inadequate, mutual benefits are
not assured. President MJ’s promising one
year to lead will be traversed together with
the support of his Directors who are flexible
leaders. Ensuring that the chapter adapts to
the current state of affairs and be prepared to
take the ingenuity to circumnavigate what is
present. This is JCI Davao’s way of life.

MESSAGE FROM THE 2022 INDUCTION CHAIRMAN
My deepest gratitude and warmest
congratulations to all guests, members, past presidents
and JCI Senators of the Junior Chamber International
Davao for making the 74th Induction of New Members,
Installation of Officers & Turnover Ceremonies a giant
milestone as this is the biggest gathering of our chapter
since the advent of the Covid-19 Global Pandemic in
the year 2020. Indeed, despite the collective challenge
that we face, we have all remained resilient and
undaunted in our mission to create positive change in
our community. Finally, the much awaited fellowship is
now being celebrated! Tonight, it is safe to unite again, it
is safe to dream again and it is safe to live again!
In 2022, 74 years since its founding in 1948, a
new generation of men will lead JCI Davao, also known
as The Davao Jaycees. Braving the challenges that lies
ahead, these gentlemen are ready to move forward as
one and make a difference to the society. JCI Davao
is indeed in a premier position as it is one of the first
11 local chapters to be established in the Philippines.
This should be a source of great pride and serves as a
constant inspiration for all of us, sons of this illustrious
chapter, as we drive to be always an outstanding
chapter not just in Mindanao, but in the Philippines and
the world.
Let’s not get distracted and continue our
momentum as we have always been since we started.

responsibility of leadership between President Mamerto dela
Torre III from Batch Dasig, to very capable President Michael James

The Induction and Turnover Ceremonies also symbolizes a renewal of JCI

of young active citizens in Iloilo City

positive change.
BLOOMS is the local organization’s
official newsletter. For the past six year,
it was able to publish articles on LO’s
community projects and feature some
heartwarming and inspiring stories of
its members and beneficiaries. This
year, BLOOMS was one of the five
finalists during the Temiong Awards of
the JCI Philippines held in November.
Committed to the Local
Organization’s Mission to personify and
ripple the essence of positive change through empowerment initiatives for
its members and the community, JCI Iloilo Ilang Ilang will mark its 40th year
by coming up with BLOOMS SOUVENIR MAGAZINE to capture the significant
events of 2021, as well as to take a peek of what is in store for 2022.It is our
humble way to pay tribute to our dedicated partners and stakeholders who
have been with us as we serve one community after another through our
varied membership development and community empowerment programs.

EXPERIENCING TOP NOTCH JAYCEESM 2022

M
y first Natcon was definitely one
to remember. It was such a roller
coaster ride going to Isabela, a
cancelled flight turned into a road trip
for almost 12 hours together with other
delegates. There we met and made friends
with other Jaycees from different chapters.
We missed the opening night but surely
the experience was one of a kind.
Temiong Awards — Who would’ve
thought that the two merits that we got at
the Temiong Awards were chaired by two
of our Delegates, Sherwin for SEED and
Rom for MOHSG 54. The look on their faces
when their Project was acknowledged
was priceless. Í’ll never forget the reaction
of VP Rom, genuine happiness!
Attending the Temiong Awards
was truly an eye-opener for us, first time
delegates. It helped us understand
more the mission of JCI — to provide
development opportunities that empower
young people to create positive change.

he Philippine Eagle – globally considered
as one of the largest and rarest birds
of prey and is regarded as a critically
endangered species only located in 4 major
islands in the Philippines – Luzon, Samar,
Leyte, and Mindanao. Currently, around 400
pairs are left in the wild, which continuously
decreases its number in proportion with the
rapid decrease of forest covers. Every year,
at least 1 Philippine Eagle is killed because
of shooting and hunting rooted in the lack
of education, awareness, and community
empowerment, making the Philippine Eagle
vulnerable and endangered.

The recently rescued Philippine Eagle
Rajah Cabungsuan has tested the partnership
between JCI Davao and PEF, resulting in
collaboration and comprehensive plan and
execution to increase community wildlife
awareness and provide the needed materials
of our rainforest guards such as solar-powered
flashlights, raincoats, bags, and used mobile
phones. The provided materials helped the
forest guards track and monitor the Rajah
Cabungsuan. Currently, JCI Davao and PEF
work hand in hand in producing more people-
saving eagles.

T
he industry of arts was one of the many areas greatly
affected by the worldwide crisis.
2022 LO President
Artists, artisans and designers alike got their fire
burning but lacked coal to feed the flame. When the surge of
the pandemic arose, various artists from different genres tried
to keep up but failed and bade goodbye to the industry.
Through the initiative of The Gutierrez Group of
Companies, La Herencia Davao and in partnership with JCI
Davao Inc., an Art Kollective was born. Mr. Wilfred Tanedo,
RICHIE MONDIDO an art enthusiast and a professor at PWC School of Fine Arts,

Development spearheaded the project together with JCI Member, Project
Chairperson and Deputy Secretary General Rex Velesrubio
and Alter Moderne Events and Weddings Davao.
Davao artists and fashion designers exhibited their
masterpieces and world class artworks at La Herencia Davao.
The collection, “Opus” by Sir Dominador Pamisa was the
highlight of the exhibit, showing off his intricacy and attention
to detail. His artworks together with renowned Davao artists
GLEN ROBLEDO CARLO FRANCO SANTOS wowed the audience with awe-inspiring artworks.

Community Development Internationalism The 12 day exhibit was expected to create an impact in
the community as it has changed the lives and perspectives of
these artists. Part of JCI’s advocacy is to help Davao artisans
get back on their feet after a 2 year hiatus. Blessed as we are
always, our organization became a beacon of hope to them.
A culminating event also took place as Fashion Designer’s
Alliance Mindanao (FADAL), ended the 12 day event with a
bang. Eye popping designs caught our attention as wonderful

President-Elect team of young aspiring designers owned the stage with fire
and glamour. Truly this event not only quaked the city, but
also inspired these artists to keep on pushing and never stop
dreaming. There is a better world for artists out there. All you
have to do is trust and believe.

JCI Davao has and always been the newsletter brings the important information
forefront of development opportunities for its to all stakeholders of the organization. For
members to step up their game and become 74 years, it has been the eyes and ears
valuable contributors to the community. As of the organization on the current events

we are called to service, we are indebted
to the organization’s reputation and carry
its legacy to greater heights year after year.
5 years into the development story, mixed
with the experiences of the pre-pandemic
days and the new normal era, it had opened
opportunities that I thought I’d never do as
a Civil Engineer, being the Editor-in-Chief of
