Title

Farewell Pilgrimage

The Farewell Pilgrimage ( romanized: Ḥijjatu Al-Wadāʿ) refers to the one Hajj pilgrimage that
Muhammad performed in the Islamic year 10 AH, following the Conquest of Mecca. Muslims
believe that verse 22:27 of the Quran brought about the intent to perform Hajj in Muhammad
that year. When Muhammad announced this intent, approximately 100,000 of his sahaba
gathered in Medina to perform the annual pilgrimage with him. Muhammad performed Hajj
Qirān, a type of Hajj in which Umrah and Hajj are performed together. On the 9th of Dhu al-
Hijjah, the Day of Arafah, Muhammad delivered the Farewell Sermon atop the Mount Arafat
outside Mecca.

Muhammad's pilgrimage defined several of the rituals and rites of the Hajj and is one of the
most well-recorded moments of his life, later transmitted through his sahaba, who
accompanied him on this occasion, observing every gesture of Muhammad, which has become
a precedent to be followed by Muslims all over the world (sunnah).

The Hajj

 Spending the night at Dhi Tuwa outside Mecca, Muhammad and his companions arrived
at the Masjid al-Haram the next day. They entered from what is the Al Salam Gate today
and approached the Kaaba. Muhammad then proceeded to the circumambulate the
Kaaba (tawaf), after which he once again touched and kissed the Black Stone.
 After his prayers, Muhammad drank from the Zamzam well, prayed, and then continued
to the hills of As Safa and Al Marwah, where he performed the ritual walking between
the two mountains (sa'ee).Muhammad the moved to Al Hujūn; he had not removed his
ihram after the Sa'ee as he had intended to perform Hajj Qirān, which involves
performing Umrah and Hajj together.
 On the sunset of the 8th of Dhu al-Hijjah, Muhammad left for Mina and performed all
prayers from Zuhr to Fajr, before leaving for Mount Arafat the next morning, walking
alongside his camel. As he ascended the mountain, he was surrounded by thousands of
pilgrims chanting Talbiyah and Takbir.
 Muhammad ordered a tent be erected for him on the east side of Mount Arafat at a
spot called Namirah. He rested in the tent until the sun passed the zenith, then he rode
his camel until he reached the valley of Uranah.
 Muhammad delivered his final Friday sermon (khutbah), known as the Farewell
Sermon, to more than 100,000 Sahaba, before leading the Zuhr and Asr prayers in
conjunction. Then he moved to plain of Arafat and spent the afternoon in
supplication.According to Al Mubarakpuri, verse 3 of Surah 5, Al Ma'idah, was revealed
to Muhammad after having delivered this sermon:

"This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have
chosen for you Islam as your religion"

Upon sunset of the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, Muhammad arrived at Muzdalifah and performed his
Maghrib and Isha prayer before taking rest. At the break of dawn, he prayed and supplicated
before returning to Mina in the morning and carrying out the ritual of the Stoning of the Devil,
reciting the takbir everytime he threw a stone at the Jamrah.[6] Muhammad then ordered the
sacrifice of the sacrificial animals that he had brought with him. Muhammad and his
companions ate little of what they had sacrificed and gave the rest to charity. Muhammad then
returned to Mecca, performed another Tawaf and prayed Zuhr at the Masjid al-Haram. He then
drank from the Zamzam well before returning to Mina on the same day and conrinuing the
Stoning of the Devil.[6] Muhammad the spent the next three days, the 11th, 12th, and 13th of
Dhu al-Hijjah, known as the Days of Tashrīq, in Mina performing the Stoning of the Devil. Al
Mubarakpuri says that Muhammad delivered another speech on the 12th, following the
revelation of Surah 110, An Nasr.
The Teachings of Muhammad

Around the year AD 570 Muhammad, the founding prophet of Islam, was born in Mecca, at the
time the central city of the Arabian Peninsula. Some 40 years later Muhammad started
preaching a new religion, Islam, which constituted a marked break from existing moral and
social codes in Arabia. The new religion of Islam taught that there was one God, and that
Muhammad was the last and most important in a series of prophets and messengers. Through
his messengers God had sent various codes, or systems of laws for living, culminating in the
Qur’an (Koran), the holy book of Islam. These messengers were mortal men, and they included
among many others Moses, the Hebrew prophet and lawgiver, and Jesus, whom Christians
believe to be the son of God rather than a prophet.

Islam also taught that the Christian Bible (which includes the Hebrew Bible as the Old
Testament and an additional 27 books referred to as the New Testament), and the Qur’an were
all holy books. According to the Qur’an, the two earlier Scriptures had been altered over time
from their original forms given by God, while the Qur’an would remain perfect, preserved by
God from such distortion. In addition to distinguishing itself from the Hebrew and Christian
traditions, the new religion taught that the God of Islam had provided humanity with the means
to know good from evil, through the prophets and the Qur’an. Therefore, on the Day of
Judgment people will be held accountable for their actions.

Muhammad’s teachings met with severe and hostile opposition, and in the year 622 he left
Mecca and sought refuge in the city of Yathrib, as a number of his followers had already done.
Upon Muhammad’s arrival, the name Yathrib was changed to Medina (meaning “the city”). The
date of Muhammad’s immigration was later set as the beginning of the 12-month lunar Islamic
calendar.

Five Basic teachings of Prophet Muhammad

1. Profession of Faith (shahada).

2. Prayer (salat).
3. Alms (zakat).
4. Fasting (sawm).
5. Pilgrimage (hajj).

SOME OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE PROPHET, PEACE BE UPON HIM

"Allah, His Magnificence be exalted, said about His chosen Messenger in the Quran, “Verily,
there has come to you a Messenger from amongst yourselves. It grieves him that you should
experience any injury or difficulty. He is concerned for you and is kind and merciful towards the
believers.’’

 Since the Prophet was eager for people to go to Paradise and escape Hellfire in the
afterlife, his life was full of great accomplishments, which testified to his truthfulness
and position as the leader of the descendants of Adam.
 From his great accomplishments was his successful invitation to the Oneness of Allah so
that any person who believes that Allah is the only thing worthy of worship and abides
by His laws may live a peaceful life in knowledge, righteousness and certainty. As for the
one who obeys other than Allah, he will be suffering, unsure, and hesitant, as this is the
nature of finite creation. He cannot satisfy any one of the gods that he worships and will
never please all of them.
 Among the accomplishments of the prophet was that he transmitted the religion that
he was commanded to teach for all people on earth to the end of time, which was
narrated by his companions and recorded by the early scholars so that Muslims today
and in the future can know the details of this religion, and the Prophet’s life to the point
that they can learn the most minute details of his personality and habits.
 Among his accomplishments is the fact that he gathered previously warring tribes and
nations as brothers and sisters in one religion regardless of their nationalities, colors and
languages to love and help each other in solidarity. Allah says, “And He put affection in
their hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth you could not have put affection in
their hearts but Allah has united their hearts.” (8:63).
 Among his accomplishments was that he changed the Arabs, by Islam, from a weak
people to a strong, proud nation which carried the noble message of Islam. As they
eradicated injustice, the fear of the weak subsided and mankind was led to the shore of
safety and peace in the light of God’s laws.
 Among his accomplishments , was that he implemented divine laws which are practical,
flexible, and universal. They promote equality and discourage segregation and social
stratification, even to the point of not discriminating in favor of his own family members.
 Among his accomplishments was that he encouraged people to excel in their worldly
affairs such as technical, industrial, chemical, physical, and agricultural sciences. The
Prophet said that Allah loves the person who does his work with perfection. He
encouraged people to excel in their work without forgetting the afterlife which is better
and everlasting. “Little is the enjoyment of the life of this world compared to that of the
Hearafter”

 The Prophet was so honorable that he didn’t take personal advantage of his position.
He forbade people from praising him excessively and attributing to him divine attributes.
A man said: ’’ O messenger of Allah, what Allah and you will will occur’’. The Prophet
immediately corrected this mistake by saying:’’ You are making me equal to Allah. Say,
what Allah wills, and then what you will”. He also said, “Don’t praise me excessively as
Christians do to ‘Easa, the son of Maryam (Jesus Christ). I am only a slave. So, say, slave
of Allah and His Messenger’’ He respected the prophets that came before him. He said
to his companions, “No one should say that I am better than Yunus Ibn Matta’’ (Jonah)
and prohibited any one to refer to any prophet as better than others with the intention
of disgracing them. When he died , he only owned a few personal items and his armor
was held as collateral by a Jewish man.

Summary

Capture here are some of the successes granted by God to the final Prophet.
He began by transforming one of the most savage and lawless communities imaginable to the
best community possible. Then, for nearly millennium, Islamic civilizations espoused a balance
spirituality, morals, scientific vibrancy and progressive thought.
It is understandable that the incompetence of Muslims nation-states today detracts from
our ability to appreciate the greatness of Islamic civilizations, but it should not bar us from
understanding and appreciating just how great the accomplishments of Muhammad truly
where and what they led to.
