ACTIVITY
08 INTRODUCTION:
mins A common problem
of the eyes are
secretions that dry
on the lashes as
crusts. This may
need to be softened
and wiped away
under sterile
conditions. In
newborns, the eyes
are treated soon
after the baby is
born to prevent
ophthalmia
neonatorum.
Eyes are cleaned
from the inner to the
outer canthus. This
prevents the
particles and fluid
from draining into
the nasolacrimal
duct. During a bath,
each eye is cleaned
with a separate
portion of the wash
cloth. When sterile
procedure is
required, each eye is
cleaned with
separate swabs,
swabbing each eye
once only. This
prevents spread of
infection from one
eye to other and to
avoid possible
recontamination of
the same eye.
A client’s general
condition and health
habits affect the
condition of his or
her fingernails and
toenails. Brittle,
broken, or
discolored nails may
be caused by
improper diet,
illness, infection, or
fever. Nail
infections are fairly
common. Some
medical conditions
cause ridges in the
nails. In other cases,
the nails become
very thick, clubbed,
or ingrown. Any
unusual nail
condition or
complaint of pain in
the hands or feet
should be reported.

CONCLUSION:
Eye cleansing is an
essential aspect of
daily hygiene and
patients in hospital
or residential/care
home, or those who
are dependent on
care at home may
need support to
maintain this aspect
of their care
Nail care is an
important part of the
client’s personal
care. It gives the
client a neat
appearance and
prevents scratches
from long nails.
Cleaning under the
nails decreases
bacterial buildup
that could cause
infections. Good
nail care plays an
integral role in
helping the client
feel well groomed
