1. OVERWIEW

The torque meter is a portable digital instrument that, coupled to a load cell mounted on an
electromagnetic brake or on a dynamometer of the UNILAB or UNIPLAN laboratories, allows
direct reading of the torque, measured in Nm.

2. TECHNICAL FEATURES

Measuring ranges:

a. UNILAB Laboratory
153 N (15 Kg) load cell DL 2006E
Reading: 0 to 9.99 Nm

b. UNIPLAN Laboratory
500 N (50 Kg) load cell DL 2006F
Reading: 0 to 50.0 Nm

Instrument accuracy: class 0.5

Analog output: 0 to 1 Vdc (1 mV = 1 dgt)

Supply voltage: single phase mains, according to data plate

FUNCTIONAL TEST

After connecting the torque meter to the power supply, switch on the main switch (1): the display
should light up.

4. CONNECTION TO THE LOAD CELL

The load cell is connected to the torque meter through the connector K (3).

According to the cell which is connected the switch (5) must be switched either in position "a" or in
position "b".

 Position "a" : 153N cell

 Position "b" : 500N cell

NOTE: The torque meter has been designed for the type of cells mentioned in paragraph 2.
If you wish to use the torque meter connected to load cells with different characteristics, it
is necessary to adjust the torque meter.

4.1 ZERO ADJUSTMENT

After power supplying the torque meter through the main switch (1), turn the multiturn
potentiometer (2) ZERO ADJ until zero is displayed.

The reading can be:

(000) = Everything ok
(---) or negative = Turn the potentiometer clockwise until zero is displayed
(+++) or positive = Turn the potentiometer counter-clockwise until zero is displayed

5. CALIBRATION

The procedure is the same either for the dynamometer or for the electromagnetic brake.

P P' CP

Balance the system by putting the weight P at the beginning of the scale of its own arm (P') and
moving the counterweight CP until the water level shows that the system is balanced.
Fix the counterweight.

Power supply the torque meter through the main switch (1) and wait few minutes until the load cell
is thermically balanced.

If necessary, adjust the display through the ZERO ADJ potentiometer until zero is displayed.

Obtain a torque value by moving the weight P: the instrument will have to show the following
value:

C = 9.81 P b
Where
C = torque in Nm
P = weight in kg
b = arm in m

Example:
At rest, put the weight P = 2 kg with an arm b = 250 mm.

The instrument will have to indicate

C = 9.81 • 2 • 0.25 = 4.905 Nm
