When the water drains from the cave, either because the
earth is uplifted or because the water table is lowered, and the cave
is opened to air, speleotherms, those breath-taking forms of cave
architecture, begin to grow. Water dripping from the roof of a
cave releases dissolved calcite, forming tiny stalactite structures.
Sometimes the delicate tubes fill in and water flowing off the cave
ceiling creeps down the outside of the deposits, broadening and
lengthening them to stone icicles called stalacti~es.The growth rate
is extremely slow, a b o u ~four-thousandths of an inch a year.
