Objective:
To determine the coefficient of permeability (K) from a laboratory test.

Introduction:
The measure of soil's ability to permit water to flow through Vs pores or
voids is termed permeability knowledge of the coefficient of permeability
(K) is important in many engineering problems which include flow
problems through earth dams seepage and uplift pressure and boiling
condition for various hydraulic structures dewatering stability analysis of
slopes earth structures and retaining walls subjected to seepage forces.

Equipment:
Constant head test:
1. Constant head permeameter device.
2. Constant elevation reservoir with water supply.
3. Thermometer.
4. 500 to 600 ml beaker.
5. Balance sensitive to 0.01g.
6. Meter stick.
7. Stopwatch.

Falling head test:

1. Falling head permeameter device.
2. Permeability board with standpipes having different areas and a
group of valves
3. Plastic or rubber tubing
4. Thermometer.
5. Meter stick.
6. Stop watch.

Data and calculate:
1. Constant head test:
Unit reading
diameter (d) [cm] 7.5
Q [cm3] 410
L [cm] 25
t [sec] 300
H [cm] 190
A= πd2/4

A= π (7.5)2/4 = 44.156 cm
K= (Q*L)/(A*t*∆H)
= (410* 25)/ (44.156* 300* 190) = 0.00472

I= ∆h/L = 190/25= 7.6

q= K*A*L = 0.00472*44.156*7.6= 1.5839 cm3/s

2. Falling head test:

Unit reading
d {mm} 4
D [cm] 10
Ho [cm] 850
H1 [cm] 150
L [cm] 14.5
t [sec] 10

A= π (D)^2/4 = π* (10)^2/4 = 78.5 cm

a= π (d)^2/4 = π * (4/10)^2/4 = 0.1256 cm

K= (a*L)*Ln(Ho/H)/ A(to-t) =
= (0.1256*14.5)*Ln(850/150)/ 78.5*(10)= 0.004024

E = ((v*Gs*Gw*gama w)/Ws)-1

Discussion:
Errors:
1. when open water to sample and water is down make
sure the water is drop on cup no out because not loss
any water and make sure the time is work and stop
after full cup.
2. on the falling head make sure the water is down on time
not water is down quickly.

Conclusion:
When the water is go to sample and drop is so speed is
true and time is low and falling head the water should be
down slowly and not touch or take should is down
normal.
