ASSESSMENT IN THE LEARNING PROCESS

Abstract

I'm going to talk about the topic which is called "Assessment in the
learning process." Except that is important to be defined what exactly the
term assessment means, not to forget to mention that in this issue an
important role plays the cooperation between students and teacher, and
normally what types of techniques or methods will use the teacher in order
to assess the students in a better way. With some other words, the
importance of this paper is whether the educational goals and standards of
the lesson are being met or not, precisely the answer of this question stays
in the fact whether the teacher uses all the necessary instructions to assess
a student properly or not.
Key words: Assessment, Techniques, Instructions etc.

1
Introduction
I will start this paper by asking the question what is important for us to
understand with the term called assessment and what knowledge do we
have related to this topic. The word assess comes from the Latin verb –
assidere meaning to sit with.
In education the term assessment – refers to the wide variety of methods or
tools that educators or better to say teachers use and evaluate. With some
other words we can say tha the term assessment – is a systematic process
of gathering information about what a student know or is able to do and is
learning to do. Using a variety of assessment techniques – teachers are
those who gather information about what students know and they are able
to do, and which this issue provides supportive positive feedback to
students.
Finally as for the introduction part - it’s important we to know that
assessment can focus on the individual learner, the learner community or
other organized group of learners, the institution or the educational system.
The purpose of assessment is to gather information and to assist in
decision making: screening, monitoring students’ progress, assigning
grades or ranks, determining one’s own instructional effectiveness etc.

2
Teacher’s role in assessment
In the learning process – we must say that the teacher is the most important
person in the classroom, of course that and students have an important role
in the classroom, but while we are at assessing part – the teacher is the
primary assessor of students, the teacher job is to teach students and
students needs to get prepared for every lesson, if this issue works well,
then it will be very easy for the teacher to assess – because the teacher will
have in mind how active participant one student was during the lectures.
Teachers demonstrate that assessment is an essential part in the learning
process and they also model effective assessment strategies and include
students in the development of assessment procedures – such as creating
rubrics or checklists. I support my opinion that in order teachers to be
correct in assessing students well, they should collaborate with colleagues
each-other and to be taken in consideration every thought which is
important about assessment.
Since teachers are responsible in the role of assessment, they must create
two types of assessment: formative and summative assessment. The goal
of formative assessment - is to monitor student learning and to provide
ongoing feedback which can be used by instructors to improve their
teaching and by students to improve their learning. And the formative
assessment – help students identify their strengths and weakness and target
areas that need work. While summative assessment – is to evaluate student
learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some
standard or benchmark. Examples of summative assessments include: a
midterm exam, a final project, a paper, a senior recital etc. Teachers need
to design assessment tools with two broad purposes: to collect information
that will inform classroom instruction, and to monitor student’s progress
towards achieving year-end learning.
One teacher – should create opportunities for students to celebrate their
progress and success.

3
Cooperation between students and teacher
In order to have a profitable assessment in the learning process – we need
to have a good relationship between students and teacher. Students goal
are very powerful, for students to be questioning is not about getting it
right, but about sharing current understanding and exploring ideas to move
learning forward. Students need – to understand that they should be active
participants in their own learning, they must take an active role in
formative assessment, and they also should be willing to share what they
know and what they don’t know related to tasks.
One of the most important elements in terms of a good relationship
between the students and teacher – is the fact that the teacher should make
the students to feel free in the classroom, to be also tolerant and to help the
students in every aspect that has to deal with evaluation. Students will
respond positively when a teacher is enthusiastic and passionate about the
content he/she is teaching. Teachers should approach their class each day
with a positive attitude, if the teacher is positive the students will generally
be positive, which means no one likes to be around someone who is
always negative. Not to forget to mention that working together will be a
great success and will yield a profitable result for both the teacher and
students.
Everything what I have mentioned so far – how to create an exemplary
relationship between teacher and students, is also based on a saying by the
author Paul Lockhart where he also says “Teaching is not about
information, it’s about having an honest intellectual relationship with your
students.”

4
Conclusion
As for the conclusion part - I should mention that the most important thing
is to choose assessment methods that will assess the type of learning which
we are trying to achieve in our course, this means that the methods that the
other teachers before they have used are not necessarily the only way or
the best way to assess, even if we become a teacher one day, we should
remember that we have spent many years as a student and therefore we
have information and experiences that will guide us in this process.
The purpose of Assessment for Learning task – is to provide feedback to
both the teacher and learner regarding the learner’s progress towards
achieving learning objectives. That’s why this feedback should be used by
the teacher to revise and develop further instruction.
Assessmet should be considered as one of the most important thing in the
process of learning, because if one teacher can assess one student well, that
student can get motivation to learn more, to strive more, to search more, in
order to achieve more.
