Code 601_Pharmacy and Chemistry of Medicinals (Laboratory)
Learning Task:
Identify the anion (names are jumbled on the first column). Then provide one (1) compound of
the anion with its use. An example is given below.

GROUP 4 OR 2 compounds and their uses

5 ANION
EDCOHRIL Chloride a. Sodium chloride (NaCl) - it has replacement
capabilities to maintain intracellular osmolarity, nerve
conduction, muscle contraction and normal renal
function.
b. Hydrogen chloride (HCl) - Hydrochloric acid is used
to make other chemicals and as a disinfectant
and slimicide. It is used in the production of chlorides,
fertilizers, and dyes, in electroplating, and in the
photographic, textile, and rubber industries.

AHATTEOYINC Thiocyanate a. Potassium thiocyanate (KSCN) - as a raw material

for chemotherapeutic drugs, antibiotics and thyroid
medications. The chemical industry uses this
inorganic reagent to produce photographs and
textiles and to manufacture herbicides, fungicides and
pesticides.
b. Sodium thiocyanate (NaSCN) - Used in
agrochemicals as herbicides. Also, it is used as a
general adhesives and binding agents for a variety of
uses, Anti-freezing agents, or de-icing products
ASEAETNR Arsenate a. Lead arsenate (PbHAsO4) Substances used for
preventing, destroying or mitigating pests
b. Zinc arsenate (Zn3(AsO4)2)- Zinc arsenate is used
as an insecticide and to preserve timber from decay
DIEIDO Iodide a. Potassium Iodide (KI) - is oral anti-thyroid
agent used in the prevention of radioactive iodine
uptake into the thyroid gland during a nuclear
radiation emergency.
b. Silver iodide (AgI) - Substances used for preventing,
destroying or mitigating pests. Often used for weather
modification applications such as cloud seeding or
anti-hail systems. Other uses for silver iodide include
serving as an antiseptic material and a photosensitive
material in photography.
MERDIBO Bromide a. Potassium bromide (KBr) - It is used in human and
animal veterinary medicine as a sedative and anti-
seizure medication. It may be used in the washing or
to assist in the lye peeling of fruits and vegetables. It
is also used in photography and as an analytical
standard in laboratories. It is also used in sanitizing
food processing equipment and utensils.
b. Silver bromide (AgBr) - Due to its light sensitive
nature, the main applications of silver bromide are in
photography. It is used in photographic films and
plates. It is also used for infrared applications, for light
sensitive eyeglasses, and semiconductors.
TRCHOLAE Chlorate a. Magnesium chlorate (Mg(ClO3)2)- Used as a drying
agent and defoliant
b. Potassium chlorate (KClO3)- used to make matches,
paper, explosives, and many other uses such as in
Food Additives – bleaching agent; flour-treatment
agent
EROTAB Borate a. Sodium perborate (NaH2BO4) - used as a treatment
of trench mouth. It is used in the detergent industry as
a bleaching agent.
b. Sodium tetraborate (Na2B4O7) - Used as a
preservative, buffer, antiseptic and fungicide, boric
acid is also used to manufacture glazes and enamels,
and to fireproof textiles and wood. In the household,
boric acid and borates as tablets or powder are used
to kill insects. It is a frequent ingredient in soaps
and detergents. It is used in conjunction with borax to
buffer and preserve certain eye drops.
TRINITE Nitrite a. Sodium nitrite (NaNO2) - Used as a food
preservative and antidote to cyanide poisoning. It has
a role as an antimicrobial food preservative, an
antihypertensive agent, a food antioxidant, a poison
and an antidote to cyanide poisoning.
b. Amyl Nitrite (C5H11ONO) - is an antihypertensive
medicine. Amyl nitrite is employed medically to treat
heart diseases such as angina and to
treat cyanide poisoning. Its use as a prescription
medicine comes from its ability to lower blood
pressure. As an inhalant, it also has psychoactive
effect which has led to illegal drug use.
RITENAT Nitrate a. Ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) - is used commonly in
fertilizers; in pyro techniques, herbicides, and
insecticides; and in the manufacture of nitrous oxide.
It is used as an absorbent for nitrogen oxides, an
ingredient of freezing mixtures, an oxidizer in rocket
propellants, and a nutrient for yeast and antibiotics.
b. Silver nitrate (AgNO3) - used as a caustic, antiseptic,
and astringent agent. It is generally used for control of
bleeding and treatment of hypertrophic granulation
tissue of cutaneous wounds

ANION
LFUOIRDE FLUORIDE a. Sodium fluoride – anticariogenic
b. Dichlorodofluoromethane (CF2Cl2) -
refrigerant (Freon gas)and
propellant in aerosols
