MODULE 4

UNIT 4: NOURISHING AND SUSTAINING THE HOUSEHOLD

OF GOD
Introduction
In this unit, you will learn about the Wisdom books in the Bible. In the Old Testament, some
persons of wisdom like Joseph, Moses and Job were also presented. Wisdom is an approach to
life. It is a way of looking at the world. For the Israelites, it is a way of living out in rational and
deliberate way of giving their commitment to God. Wisdom started in the Old Testament and it
progressed and flourished during the New Testament period. We can read the wisdom
perspectives of the prophets and priests, Samuel, the kings, prophets Amos and Jeremiah.

There were also questions about life, like how to discipline children, how they should survive,
the need for hard work and how to provide the necessities of life. These questions faced by the
Israelites are still asked in our time. The answers to these questions can be found in some
Wisdom books. The Book of Proverbs discusses how to approach life, and provides the norms
of life that are right and true. Other Wisdom books also deal with the exceptions and mysteries
of life. The Book of Job tells why good people suffer. The Book of Ecclesiastes tells us about the
meaning of life. The Song of Songs discusses the miracles of loving, like the love of a husband
and wife that is a basic building block of the household or family of God.
