Intuitively, a set is a “collection” of objects known as “elements.” But in the early 1900’s,
a radical transformation occurred in mathematicians’ understanding of sets when the British
philosopher Bertrand Russell identified a fundamental paradox inherent in this intuitive notion of
a set.
In many settings, the upper case letters A, B, . . . , Z are used to name sets, and a pair of
braces {,} is used to specify the elements of a set. In example 2.1.1, V is a finite
