13 DESCRIPTION OF EQUIPMENT
The equipment is a three-phase ac squirrel cage induction motor rated at 690 V line to line voltage
(equivalent to a dc link voltage of 930 V) 2300 rpm 759 HP (1328 lbf-ft torque) at 690 V or 746 HP
(1305 lbf-ft torque) at 600V, at 800RPM and 587V, the rating is 1150HP (7550 lbf-ft).
The motors to be used on the following duty cycles:
Duty reference Specification
A 120 seconds on at 800 rpm, 1400 HP, 9200 ft/lb torque, followed by 90 seconds on at
80 rpm, no load. (S9 duty)
B 144 seconds on at 669 rpm, 1150 HP, 9025 ft/lb torque, followed by 116 seconds on at
80 rpm, no load. (S9 duty)
The motors are intended to be used for oil drilling applications and are to be supplied as a standard
motor requiring forced air cooling as specified in the table below and adequate ingress protection such
that the certification is not invalidated.
The machine consists of a wound stator with class H insulation within a carbon steel frame and a
squirrel cage rotor mounted via bearing assisted end plates in the centre of the stator.
The 5GEB20/5GEB20IDS can be used with the following range of Siemens converters:

• The introduction of an alternative arrangement with side mounted cooling air inlet that is fitted to
the side opposite the main terminal box.
• The RTD trip level may be raised from 170°C to 190°C.
• The motor output power may be de-rated to allow the ambient to be raised from 45 oC to 55oC.

• An alternative association of the motor with an a.c. drive system Types – Compact AC Drive P1500,
P1300, P1180 or P1030 manufactured by Offshore & Marine ASA and the modification of the
corresponding special condition for safe use to recognise this fact. The following duty cycle is
applicable for this application:

Variation 3 - This variation introduced the following changes:
i. The use of the motors with the following Vacon Frequency Drives was allowed, these Drives have
been added to the list of permissible variable speed drives in the Description of Equipment above:

ii. The introduction of a new motor, model number 5GEB20C2, this motor can be used with all the
variable speed drives listed in the Description of Equipment above.
Variation 4 - This variation introduced the following changes:
i. The use of the motors with the following Omron Variable Speed Drive was allowed, this Drive has
been added to the list of permissible variable speed drives in the Description of Equipment above:
• Omron A1000 1200 A Variable Speed
When used with this Drive, the motors are supplied continuously with a cooling air supply of at
least 3000 SCFM, therefore, this value was adopted as the rate of air supply with all motors the
description and special condition for safe use being amended accordingly.
ii. The option to install a closed circuit water cooler (CACW) was recognised.
iii. The Special Condition for Safe Use that defines the temperature rating of the cable entries was
modified.
Variation 5 - This variation introduced the following changes:
i. The optional addition of an IP56 breather on horizontally mounted motors only was endorsed.
ii. The drawing list is amended to include drawings previously omitted at Issue 4.
Variation 6 - This variation introduced the following changes:
i. The option to use the Wartsila Converter Type PD2 was recognised. The Description of Equipment,
Special Conditions for Safe Use and Conditions of Certification were amended accordingly.
Variation 7 - This variation introduced the following changes:
i. The introduction of a new Condition of Certification relating to S9 Duty cycles.
ii. The description was altered to recognise that the designation of one of the suitable Variable Speed
Drives (VSD) was amended due to the company name change:

15 SPECIAL CONDITIONS FOR SAFE USE (denoted by X after the certificate number)
15.1 The cable fitted to the motors shall be capable of withstanding the following maximum temperatures at
the cable entry point:
• Either 110°C when using one cable per phase.
• Or 90°C when using two cables per phase.
15.2 The motor shall be supplied continuously with the minimum cooling air flow specified. The cooling
arrangements must be suitable for the area in which it is installed and, when fitted to the motors they
shall ensure the equipment satisfies a degree of protection of at least IP44.
15.3 The RTD devices within the equipment shall be supplied from a suitably certified intrinsically safe source.
15.4 When the motor is equipped with a closed circuit water cooler (CACW) and used in accordance with the
duties defined in this certificate, the CACW shall be supplied with coolant in accordance with the
following tables:

15.5 The IP56 breathers shall be mounted vertically (breather down).


15.6 When used with Wartsila Converter Type PD2 the installer/end user shall ensure that the delay on the
PT100 is set to 5s or less and the trip temp is 179°C or below or alternatively the delay is 10s or less
and the trip temp is 176°C or below.
16 ESSENTIAL HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS OF ANNEX II (EHSRs)
The relevant EHSRs that are not addressed by the standards listed in this certificate have been
identified and individually assessed in the reports listed in Section 14.2.
17 CONDITIONS OF CERTIFICATION
17.1 The use of this certificate is subject to the Regulations Applicable to Holders of Sira Certificates.
17.2 Holders of EC type-examination certificates are required to comply with the production control
requirements defined in Article 8 of directive 94/9/EC.
17.3 An electric strength test in accordance with EN 60079-7:2007 clause 6.1 shall be carried out on all live
parts and the case plus the heaters after they are incorporated into an electric machine.
17.4 When motors are supplied for use on a duty cycle, the rating marked on the label shall be modified to
read: ‘Continuous / S9’.
17.5 The manufacturer shall perform bearing calculations to prove bearing life, torque calculation to prove
the suitability of the shaft extension and bearing seal calculations to prove seal life.
17.6 When used with Wartsila Converter Type PD2 the drive manufacturer shall ensure that the delay on the
PT100 is set to 5s or less and the trip temp is 179°C or below or alternatively the delay is 10s or less
and the trip temp is 176°C or below.
17.7 If the user/installer requires the motor to operate on an S9 duty cycle that has not been tested by Sira,
then the manufacturer shall ensure that this duty cycle is safe by calculation or test, in accordance with
clause 4.2.9 of EN 60034-1: 2010.
