SPECIALIZED FIELDS IN POULTRY

Three Categories of POULTRY PRODUCTION

MLBibat2020 2
1. BREEDING Farm
• It is the system of
researching or
discovering the best
combination of genes
of parent stocks that
will be the source of
commercial chicks for
the poultry producer.

MLBibat2020 3
1. BREEDING Farm
• The existing “strains” or
probably across of
various lines now
available to a
commercial poultry
raiser is a product of
very long studies by
genetics.
MLBibat2020 4
1. BREEDING Farm

• There is no true commercial poultry

breeding farm existing in the Philippines of
2003

• Poultry breeding farms in the country are

franchised breeder farms from other
international breeders.

MLBibat2020 6
2. EGG Farm

• Egg production is the

older scheme of
poultry production
engaged in by many
research.

MLBibat2020 7
Two phases of operations in Egg Farm
• The first phase can be strictly for raising
pullets.
• The second phase is the keeping of layers
per se when they are on the stage off egg
production.

 All female type chicks are obtained from

the reputable hatchery for this kind of stock.

MLBibat2020 8
RAISING Pullets
• Pullet is a young hen that is
under 1 years of age, and
has not started laying eggs
yet.
• Pullets are fully grown, and
will have a full coat of shiny
new feathers. However,
their body is still
developing, and isn’t
ready to lay eggs.

lay eggs.

KEEPING of Layers
• Layer poultry farming
means raising egg
laying poultry birds for
the purpose of
commercial egg
production.
• Layer chickens are
such a special species
of hens, which need to
be raised from when
they are one day old.
MLBibat2020 11
How to keep Layer Chickens
• Provide quality feed. To keep your chickens productive
and healthy, feed them the best food you can afford.
• Clean nest boxes frequently
• Allow free-ranging
• Supplement with calcium
• Inspect chickens regularly
• Secure the coop
• Provide fresh water
• Control parasites

3. BROILER Farm
• It is the most recent specialized field in the
Philippines.
• This is the growing of meat – type chicken
essentially for meat production.
• Stocks used for this purpose are so called
broiler-type chicks which are known for their
fast growth, meaty conformation and good
feed conservation.
MLBibat2020 14
3. BROILER Farm
• Broiler chicks are grown for a period of only
6 to 7 weeks.
• Both male and female chicks are utilized for
growing broilers. However, the males grow
faster than females

How to identify male and female chicken?
1. Back and Tail Feathers
• Back and tail feathers on cockerels will be more pointed,
pullets will have slightly more rounded feathers on the
ends.
2. Tails
• Together with the feathering,
cockerels tend to have slightly
longer tails than pullets.

from about 5 or 6 weeks
(easier in breeds that have
larger combs).

4. Behavior
• Male Behavior: Hackles
raised. The pullet turned
away but the male stood
up to me for a moment as
I went to pick him up. Not
all males are as brave
though and often it is only
seen displayed to other
chicks.

5. Size
• Males tend to be larger / heavier
and have larger feet (male on
left).

6. Crowing
• Eventually by 8 to 10 weeks, young
cockerels will start to crow. The
trouble is, at first, it’s a small
screech and it takes weeks of
practice to get to a full ‘cock-a-
doodle-do’, so unless you see
which bird it was, you may miss it!

STUDENT LEARNING ACTIVITIES
• Situational Analysis
Mrs. Hen is new in the poultry egg business. In
fact, she just started last year when she retired and
invested her retirement benefits in the poultry egg
business. She has about 5,000 ready-to-lay white
leghorn pullets about 4 and half months old. Eager
about the prospect of deriving profit from the
venture, she decided to feed her birds with layer
mash to induce them to lay eggs which she learned
from her conversation with a friend who happens to
be in the business also.

STUDENT LEARNING ACTIVITIES
When the birds began to lay eggs, she was eagerly
collecting eggs in the layer house when she noticed something.
Almost majority of the eggs collected were small in size
compared to those sold in the market. Furthermore, she also
found out that of the 120 eggs she collected 10% were soft-
shelled eggs and could not be marketed. She was worried
about this so much.
Questions:
1. What is the possible cause of the small-sized eggs of the flock
of Mrs. Hen?
2. What would you suggest to Mrs. Hen as solution
3. What are the various management activities to be
performed in the laying house?
4. How many times will you collect eggs from the laying house
