Vice President Abubakir Siedahmed
On behalf of the California State University, Los Angeles chapter of the

academic year. Cal State LA NSBE is committed to the promotion of science,
technology, engineering and math (STEM) at our university and throughout our
community. This chapter of the National society of Black Engineers is comprised
of 50 members and is one of more than 515 active NSBE chapters nationally —
291 collegiate, 84 professional and 145 precollegiate, which are run by more than
16,000 active members.
The National Society of Black Engineers is a non-profit organization that was
founded in 1975. This organization spans across the world with six regions
(Region 1 - Region 6) and supports black STEM students in all academic and
career levels. Our mission is to increase the number of culturally responsible black
engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact
the community.
This letter is a request for financial sponsorship for our chapter programming,
and most importantly, our upcoming National Convention. The National
Convention is NSBE’s most anticipated and most impactful event of the year.
Members from around the world gather to share knowledge, gain employment
opportunities, and continue fulfilling the NSBE mission. This year, the National
Convention will be held on Wednesday, March 10 – Sunday, March 14, 2021 in
Orlando, Florida.
Our chapter accomplishments would not be possible without the continued
support of our sponsors. Thus, we are seeking your financial assistance to
support our chapter programming and to attend the 2020 NSBE National
Convention.
If you should have any questions, please contact our chapter via e-mail at
nsbe@calstatela.edu. We appreciate your time and consideration. We look
forward to developing a partnership with you in the near future.

NSBE Mission and Objective

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is the largest student-run, nonprofit
organization in the world. NSBE is committed to the development and
implementation of new strategies to equip Black STEM majors with the information
and skills they need to thrive in the academic arena and the corporate world. NSBE
acts a vehicle for upward mobility by providing a network of support that helps to
enhance the skills and capabilities of Black STEM majors. Every year, the number of
active NSBE members increases by approximately 5% as a result of successful
programming that encourages academic excellence, personal growth, and
professional development. It is our belief that through these efforts we have been
able “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel
academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.”

Chapter Goals
In the future, the California State University, Los Angeles NSBE Chapter plans on increasing the
number of general and board members. The chapter is currently comprised of 6 board members
and 25 body members for the upcoming academic year (2019-2020). We will be utilizing a few
strategies to obtain a higher number of members through increased tabling efforts where current
NSBE students can share with prospective members the benefits of being a NSBE member. We also
plan on collaborating with other organizations on campus to help add to our presence on campus.
Several current NSBE members will have the opportunity to recruit at different high schools as well
as STEM day in August to recruit students that are either graduating from high school or transferring
from a community college. Students who join the Cal State LA NSBE chapter will be surrounded by
an atmosphere of support, leadership, and motivation, as it is critical during the process of obtaining
a degree in a STEM field.

President: Nyle Usserey-Brumfield

My name is Nyle Ussery Brumfield I am a third-year majoring in civil engineering at California State University Los
Angeles pursuing my bachelor’s degree in science. I am serving as the president of CSULA’s National Society of Black
Engineering’s (NSBE) chapter. At the start of my college career I wanted to do everything possible to gain merit in
order to secure a job after my undergraduate experience but as the need came up, I stepped up to the plate to leave
my fellow NSBE members and help them secure jobs after college.

NSBE has helped me in more ways than one. When joining NSBE I was immediately put into a position where I could
achieve excellence at career fairs through the vast support from my fellow members. They help me develop resumes,
interviewing skills, and skills that the job market is looking for as soon as I had joined. Thanks to NSBE I am an honor
student with a 3.7 GPA and was able to experience an internship that I obtained through NSBE.

Vice President: Abubakir Siedahmed

My name is Abubakir Siedahmed. I am a senior undergraduate honor student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in
Computer Science in the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology at California State
University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA). I currently serve as the vice-president of Cal State LA’s National Society of
Black Engineers (NSBE) chapter. At the start of my college journey, I wanted to obtain leadership skills and
increase my network. Therefore, I joined multiple organizations, but only one of the organizations helped me
thrive academically and succeed professionally.

NSBE has become more than an opportunity for me to become a leader or expand my network. I was
welcomed into the organization with open arms. The Cal State LA NSBE chapter workshops helped me
become an honor student, which requires me to earn 3.5 GPA or higher every semester. I was also able to
receive help from the board members to assist me with creating an appealing resume. Thanks to the
executive board, I was able to receive four scholarships, get into a research program by NASA, and obtain
an internship during my sophomore academic year.

Treasurer: Camren Geyen

My name is Camren Geyen and I am third-year student at California State University, Los Angeles. I’m
currently working towards a bachelor’s degree in Science for Civil Engineering. I was completely lost in my
first semester here at Cal State LA and NSBE was eager to help me get a hold of the college life. Out of all of
the organizations I went to for help, NSBE has been the most helpful by a wide margin.

NSBE has showed me the many opportunities that are right in front of us as long as we look for them. I have
been able to learn from professional engineers and improve my leadership skills immensely since joining. I
have been going to career fairs, building connections, and scheduling events for a couple of years now. All of
this has led to me becoming a more responsible, dedicated, and dependable person. Thanks to NSBE, I have
also vastly improved my academic skills. Before becoming involved, I was struggling to keep up with most of
my classes. Now my habits are much more organized, and I was able to achieve a 3.2 GPA last semester
because of it.
