NSBE Mission and Objective
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is the largest student-run, nonprofit
organization in the world. NSBE is committed to the development and
implementation of new strategies to equip Black STEM majors with the information
and skills they need to thrive in the academic arena and the corporate world. NSBE
acts a vehicle for upward mobility by providing a network of support that helps to
enhance the skills and capabilities of Black STEM majors. Every year, the number of
active NSBE members increases by approximately 5% as a result of successful
programming that encourages academic excellence, personal growth, and
professional development. It is our belief that through these efforts we have been
able “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel
academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.”

• An event called A Walk for Education was successfully executed in the academic years of 2017-
2018 and 2018 -2019 in collaboration with the Cal State LA Black Student Union. This event gives
NSBE collegiate-level students the opportunity to encourage black youth to become future
engineers and scientists through informational sessional, science demonstrations, and activities.

2019 academic year held in Seattle, Washington.
• Shadowing, mentorship, and tutoring programs have been established to help recruit and retain
NSBE members on the Cal State LA campus. Through these programs, members are able to
transition into future chapter leaders.
Chapter Goals
In the future, the California State University, Los Angeles NSBE Chapter plans on increasing the
number of general and board members. The chapter is currently comprised of 6 board members
and 25 body members for the upcoming academic year (2019-2020). We will be utilizing a few
strategies to obtain a higher number of members through increased tabling efforts where current
NSBE students can share with prospective members the benefits of being a NSBE member. We also
plan on collaborating with other organizations on campus to help add to our presence on campus.
Several current NSBE members will have the opportunity to recruit at different high schools as well
as STEM day in August to recruit students that are either graduating from high school or transferring
from a community college. Students who join the Cal State LA NSBE chapter will be surrounded by
an atmosphere of support, leadership, and motivation, as it is critical during the process of obtaining
a degree in a STEM field.

Current Board Member Biographies
The brief biographies below highlight some of the Cal State LA NSBE board members who will benefit from your
financial support. We are truly grateful for your financial contribution as it will be used to help our members
attend the NSBE National Convention and support chapter programming. These students below have been
recognized for their academic achievements and community involvement. All members have aspirations to add
value to the Cal State LA NSBE chapter while cultivating relationships with the community and promoting
participation in STEM fields.
NSBE has helped me in more ways than one. When joining NSBE I was immediately put into a position where I could
achieve excellence at career fairs through the vast support from my fellow members. They help me develop resumes,
interviewing skills, and skills that the job market is looking for as soon as I had joined. Thanks to NSBE I am an honor
student with a 3.7 GPA and was able to experience an internship that I obtained through NSBE.
NSBE has become more than an opportunity for me to become a leader or expand my network. I was
welcomed into the organization with open arms. The Cal State LA NSBE chapter workshops helped me
become an honor student, which requires me to earn 3.5 GPA or higher every semester. I was also able to
receive help from the board members to assist me with creating an appealing resume. Thanks to the
executive board, I was able to receive four scholarships, get into a research program by NASA, and obtain
an internship during my sophomore academic year.
NSBE has showed me the many opportunities that are right in front of us as long as we look for them. I have
been able to learn from professional engineers and improve my leadership skills immensely since joining. I
have been going to career fairs, building connections, and scheduling events for a couple of years now. All of
this has led to me becoming a more responsible, dedicated, and dependable person. Thanks to NSBE, I have
also vastly improved my academic skills. Before becoming involved, I was struggling to keep up with most of
my classes. Now my habits are much more organized, and I was able to achieve a 3.2 GPA last semester
because of it.
