INTRODUCTION

Education is gaining prime importance in todays competitive scenario. BBA is the common
abbreviation used for Bachelor of Business Administration. MBA is one of the most common
career choices amongst the youth in India today. This is purely because of the benefits that
the course offers. More and more MBA schools and management institutes are coming up in
India. There are more than thousand institutes all across the country that offers full time
residential mbas. Distance learning MBA, online MBA and part time executive mbas are also
gaining momentum. With the growing needs of the industry for world class managers, the
institutes offering mbas has also gone up in the last few years. The present study is an
empirical analysis designed to measure the BBA students perception and satisfaction level
towards the BBA programme they study. Study undertaken with sample of 30 students.
While selecting this institute, placement, activities done by the institute, computer lab facility,
suggestion from friends and family, career goal of the student, positive word of mouth,
experience of the faculty, guidance from the counselor ,specialization offered and course
provided by the institute, brand name of the institute and environment location are mostly
considered by the students . Today more and more students who are opting management
degree are very conscious regarding the selection of the institutions. After selecting such
institute, it becomes important for them to have complete satisfaction at positive perception
towards the course they have studied. Hence this study was carried out objective of the study

1.3.RESEARCH PROBLEM

“An empirical analysis of the perception of management students about their career life
Today more and more students who are opting BBA degree are very conscious regarding the
selection of the institutions. As most of the students prefer premium institutes having
reputation in the education field, we want to find out the perception and satisfaction level of
the students evaluated while selecting an institute. Management education is the most sought-
after field for people all across the world. Most of the best and bright minds pursue
management education because it is a sure way to highly paid jobs with great prospects for
career advancement. Consequently, B-schools in India give a lot of importance to the student
placements. When placement is most important, we need to address the serious employment
challenges prevalent in the current market scenario. In this context, it was imperative to
understand as to why students prefer one job offer over another. This study was an attempt to
capture the perception of the students to identify the relative importance of certain parameters
while evaluating their job offers..

1.5.RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research methodology is the process used to collect information and data for the purpose of
making business decisions. The methodology may include publication research, interviews,
surveys and other research techniques, and could include both present and historical
information. Research methodology is the specific procedures or techniques used to identify,
select, process and analyze information about a topic. In a research paper, the methodology
section allows the reader to critically evaluate a study’s overall validity and reliability. The
methodology section answers two main questions: How was the data collected or generated?
How was it analyzed? The methodology may include publication research, interviews,
surveys and other research techniques, and could include both present and historical
information
RESEARCH DESIGN
Research design is defined as a framework of methods and techniques chosen by a researcher
to combine various components of research in a reasonably logical manner so that the
research problem is efficiently handled. In this study the design used by the researcher is
Case study method. Case study is a method of exploring and analyzing the life of a social
unit, the social unit may be a person or a family or an institution or an organization or even a
community. A fairly exhaustive study of a person or group is called a case study. Through a
case study one can know precisely the factors and causes of a particular phenomenon. The
researcher in this study tries to find out the perception of management students about their
career life.

POPULATION
A research Population refers to a large collection of individuals or objects that is the main
focus of a scientific query. In this study, researcher selects the BBA students of SAHRDAYA
COLLEGE OF AADVANCED STUDY, as the population. Total strength of BBA students
are 146. So the population is finite
SAMPLING
Sampling refers to the process used in statistical analysis in which a predetermined number of
observations are taken from a larger population. In this study, sampling is adopted for further
processes .In this study the population is finite. So here the method used is probability
sampling. In probability sampling the researcher uses simple random sampling method.

5

Here, the sampling method is adopted to assess the perception of management students about
their career life

SAMPLE SIZE
A sample size is a part of the population chosen for a survey or experiment. In this study, the
sample size is 30 students from total students of BBA

DATA USED

Researcher can collect his information from two sources namely primary and secondary.
Research data is defined as recorded factual material commonly retained by and accepted in
the scientific community as necessary to validate research findings. Data can be classified
into two

PRIMARY DATA
Primary data refers to the data collected by researcher from first hand sources like surveys,
interviews, questionnaire, etc.The primary data for this research is collected using
questionnaire method by taking a sample size from the total population and interview method
. Through interview method, researcher knows the views and ideas of students about their
career life

SECONDARY DATA
Secondary data refers to the data which have been collected by collected by some other
person for his purpose and published. Common sources of secondary data in this research
include information collected from reports and publications of similar work and the data that
was originally collected for other research purposes.

vocabulary to pre-med students in Arabian Gulf University. The findings did not show
statistically significant differences regarding achievement or demonstrated a high degree of
satisfaction with online unit. Some studies contacted with the viewpoints of students
regarding blended learning.
Joseph SiaKee Ming (2010).has prepared a research paper on title, “Institutional Factors
Influencing Students‟ College Choice Decision in Malaysia: A Conceptual Framework”
Intense competition in the higher education sector in Malaysia has forced many universities
to become “entrepreneurs” and implement marketing strategies in recruiting students both
locally and abroad.
Enwistle (2003), is that a student‟s motivation to learn is a key influence on how that student
learns overall. The second assumption is that there is a relationship between the type and
level of motivation to learn of a student and their expectations of that learning experience.
Lewis and Airey (2001) investigated secondary school students‟ perceptions towards
tourismcareers in Trinidad and Tobago.
DeBacker& Nelson (1999) who suggest that these expectations of learning will have a
number of different dimensions. In making the link between motivations and expectationsthis
paper considers motivation across two dimensions: Intrinsic motivation and extrinsic
motivation.

2.2THEORETICAL FRAME WORK:-

Career development theory is the study of career paths, success and behaviour. It aims to
explain why a person might be a good fit for a certain career and provide advice on how to
attain a promising trajectory. It also focuses on identifying common career stages when
education, guidance and other interventions are necessary.
Career Development theories come from four main areas of study:
 Differential psychology
 Personality
 Sociology
 Developmental psychology
Frank Parsons pioneered career development theory with the release of his trait and factor
theory in the early 1900s. Since then, the study of career development has produced various
theories and captured much public interest. In the following sections, we examine five of the
most influential career development theories.
Frank Parsons’ trait and factor theory:
Trait and factor theory entails three actions. First, examine the personality traits of the person
whose career is being planned. Second, inventory the character traits of the job. Third,
measure the personality traits of the individual against the traits of the job.
The trait and factor theory is used in a number of aptitude tests including:

 Interest-Kuder Career Search (KCS)

 Aptitude-Differential Aptitude Tests (DAT)
 General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB)

Holland theory of vocational types:

The Holland theory of vocational types focuses on personality types as the main factor in
career choice and development. John L. Holland developed his theory on the idea that career
choice is based on personality. He believed that a person’s work satisfaction is linked to
similarities between their personality and job environment.
Holland’s theory has six personality types, sometimes call the Holland Codes or Holland
Occupational Themes:

 Realistic (R): Also called “Doers,” people in this type solve problems by taking action
rather than discussing it. Realistic types are interested in work that requires skill and

10
Sahrdaya College of Advanced Studies

strength. Carpenters, chefs and personal trainers all fit into the realistic personality
type.
 Investigative (I): Also called “Thinkers,” people in this type like to work with
information. Investigative types enjoy working by themselves rather than with a group.
Actuaries, lawyers and doctors all fit into the investigative personality type.
 Artistic (A): Also called “Creators,” people in this type are creative, inventive and
typically more emotionally aware than other Holland Types. Artistic types are
independent but enjoy working with other people. Graphic Designers, writers and
musicians all fit in the investigative personality type.
 Social (S): Also called “Helpers,” people in this type enjoy teaching or helping others.
Social types value working with others and creating relationships. Teachers,
counselors and human resource professionals all fit in the social personality type.
 Enterprising (E): Also called “Persuaders,” people in this type enjoy working with
people and information. Enterprising types of value status and security. Entrepreneurs,
stockbrokers and salespeople all fit in the enterprising personality type.
 Conventional (C): Also called “Organizers,” people in this type enjoy rules and
regulations. Like enterprising types, they put a value on status and money. However,
they have a dislike for unclear or unstructured work. COOs, personal financial
planners and economists fit in the conventional personality type

Meaning of Perception:
Different individuals have different thinking styles, beliefs, feelings and objectives etc. and
almost every individual behave accordingly. Just because of these factors different people
take different meaning for the same things.
For some, a particular thing is right where as for some it is totally wrong. It is all because
how you take things, what is your point of view, how you look at things. This is perception.

Stephen P. Robbins defines perception as:

“Perception may be defined as a process by which individuals organize and interpret their
sensory impressions in order to give meaning to their environment.”

Features of Perception:
1. Intellectual process through which a person selects the data from the environment
organizes it and obtains meaning from it.
2. Basic cognitive or psychological process. People’s actions, emotions, thoughts or
feelings are triggered by the percep-tion of their surroundings.
3. A subjective process.

Elements of Perceptual Process:

 Perceptual Inputs:
This is the first stage in the perception process where the perceiver comes across various
information in the formal objects, events, people etc. All these factors exist in the
environment itself. These factors provide stimuli to the per-ceiver. When the perceiver
interacts with a stimulus, sensa-tion takes place which starts perception process.
Stimuli may be in the form of-
i. Objects
ii. Events
iii. People

 Perceptual Mechanism:
This involves three elements:
(a) Selection of Stimuli:

12
Sahrdaya College of Advanced Studies
THE PERCEPTION OF MANAGEMWENT STUDENTS ABOUT THEIR CAREER LIFE

Various forms of stimuli exist in the environment. As human being is also a part of the
environment he receives the stimuli from it. There are basically two types of factors in the
environment. One is internal factor, which relates to the perceiver. Second is external factor
which is related to stimuli.

(b) Organization of Stimuli:

Arranging stimuli in some form so as to make sense. Various forms of organizing stimuli are-

 Figure Ground:
This is one of the principles of collect-ing information. This principle is known as
figure ground principle. Here, while collecting information, two things are kept in
mind, first is focus and second is background.
Decision is made on the basis of the focus keeping in consideration the background of
the matter. E.g. in most of the organizations, good performance is taken as the focus
for promotions and their relations with the supe-riors are taken as background,
whereas it is just the opposite in some organizations where relations with the
superiors are taken as the focus whereas the perfor-mance is taken as the background.
This varies from organization to organization.

 Perceptual Grouping:
On the basis of the proximity and similarities various stimuli are grouped together
into recognizable patterns. This grouping of stimuli helps the individuals in perceiving
things in a proper manner or in a manner in which they want to perceive. Grouping is
also done by them accordingly.

 Simplification:
Every person tries to decrease the burden whenever he is overloaded. Here we are
talk-ing of overload of information. In order to reduce this load, people try to simplify
the process or contents of the matter. This they do by eliminating the less impor-tant
or less required information and concentrating upon the important information. This
decreases their work load and helps them in understanding things in a better manner.

13
Sahrdaya College of Advanced Studies
THE PERCEPTION OF MANAGEMWENT STUDENTS ABOUT THEIR CAREER LIFE

 Closure:
This is known as the winding up of the mat-ter or filling the gap to make things
meaningful or un-derstandable. This is followed whenever the manager realizes that
there is some gap in the information which he has received or when he finds the
information in-complete. So through his own experience, past history and analysis he
fills the gap of incomplete information and makes the information complete.
(c) Interpretation of Stimuli:
After selecting and organizing stimuli the next step is interpretation. Here the perceiver
interprets things according to his thinking styles, state of mind, envi-ronment, circumstances,
objectives, beliefs etc. This is done by making assumption about people, by using past
experi-ence etc.
 Perceptual Output:
These outputs may be in the form of covert action like development of attitudes, opinions,
beliefs, impressions etc. about the stimuli.
Factors Influencing Perception:
The factors which affect perceptual mechanism are of three kinds:
1. Characteristics of the Perceiver
2. Characteristics of the Perceived or target, and
3. Characteristic of the Situation
1. Characteristics of the Perceiver (Internal Factors):
These are the personal characteristics of the individuals:
(i) Needs & Motives:
(ii) Self Concept:
(iii) Beliefs
(iv) Past Experience:
(v) Current Psychological State:
According to Daniel Katz:
a. An individual self-censors his intake of communications so as to shield his beliefs and
practices from attack.
b. An individual seeks out communication which support his beliefs and practices
c. The latter is particularly true when the beliefs and prac-tices in question have undergone
attack.
(vi) Expectations:
2.Characteristics of the Perceived or Target:

14
Sahrdaya College of Advanced Studies
THE PERCEPTION OF MANAGEMWENT STUDENTS ABOUT THEIR CAREER LIFE

(i) Size- The bigger is the size of the perceived stimulus, the greater the possibility that it is
perceived & vice versa. People tend to understand things better when it is explained in a
clearer manner and they understand the same accordingly.
(ii) Intensity- More intense the external stimulus is, the more likely it is to be perceived e.g. a
loud sound, bright color etc. is more likely to attract attention than a soft sound or relatively
dull color.
(iii) Frequency- The greater the frequency of repetition of things, the greater will be the
perceptual selectivity. This is also in accordance with the repetitive theory of learning.
(iv) Status- Perception is also influenced by the status of the perceiver. High status people can
have greater influence on perception of an employee as compared to low status people.
(v) Contrast – The stimulus which is in contrast with the sur-rounding environment attracts
more attention as compared to the stimuli that blends in.

Perceptual Selectivity:
i. Perception is a selective process as people can sense only limited amount of information in
the environment. They are characteristically selective.
ii. By selection certain aspects of stimuli are screened out and others are admitted.
iii.Such a selectivity in perception can be brought about by different factors which can be
broadly classified as external and internal factors.
 External Factors in Perceptual Selectivity:
External factors are in the form of the characteristics of perceptual input or stimuli.
Impact of external factors on the perceptual selectivity.
(1) Size:
May affect the perceptual selectivity by affecting the attraction of the perceiver.
Usually bigger is the size of per-ceived stimulus, higher is the probability that it
attracts the – attention of the perceiver and he may select it for percep-tion.
(2) Intensity:
More intense the external stimulus is, the more likely it is to be perceived
(3) Repetition:
Repeated external stimulus is more attention getting than a single one.

4.3.CONCLUSION
This research helps the researcher to understand the satisfaction level of BBA students . Most of the
students prepared to pursue MBA due to ample facilities and opportunities available in various
institutions. Students expect more job opportunities from MNC‟s such as INFOSYS, WIPRO, TCS,
HCL etc., industrial visits outside Tamilnadu, internships, project funding from organization. Apart
from syllabus, importance must be given to improve technical skills and practical knowledge among
students. The students need the teachers to be their advisors when they have problems with their
studies.
