4.1 Introductory Activity

Look at the pictures above? What are these products made of? How can a company
determine on market trends on products made of bamboo, wood and metal and the
customer’s preference of these products?
4.2 Activity What are the ways of collecting data? (survey /interview, questionnaire, focus group
discussion, forum)
Give each group activity cards containing the steps in conducting a survey. Asking of
questions.

4.3 Analysis Guide the pupils on how to conduct a survey through simulation game.
Give emphasis on the importance of patience in conducting a survey.
Steps in Conducting a Survey
1. Know your population
2. Determine the mode
3. Create a questionnaire
4. Test your questionnaire
5. Get a good sample
6. Collect the data
7. Organize data
8. Weigh the data
9. Analyze the data
10. Present the result
Give examples of questions to be used in a survey.

4.4 Abstraction  Survey will let the companies know the market trends and the customer’s preference
of bamboo, wood and metal products.
 It is very important to be patient in conducting a survey.

4.5 Application Group activity. Each group will simulate a survey. Guide questions may vary.
Teachers and pupils in the school will be the respondent in the survey.
5. Assessment
 Assess the simulation game survey conducted by the pupils using the rubrics below:

Rubrics

10 The simulation is smoothly presented, able to execute correctly, with cooperation.
8 The simulation is not smoothly presented, able to execute correctly, with cooperation.
6 The simulation is not smoothly presented, able to execute correctly, with no cooperation.
4 The simulation is not smoothly presented, not able to execute correctly, with cooperation.
2 No presentation at all.

Discussion:
 How did you find the simulation game survey?
 What did you do in order to carry out the survey successfully?
 Does the survey you conducted make you identify the market trends and the
customer’s preference?
 What do you think manufacturers should do to address the market trends?

4. Procedures
4.1 Introductory Activity

Show pictures to the pupils. What make these products appealing and durable?

4.2 Activity Give activity card to each group. Let them identify if the material written on the activity
card is a finishing material for wood work, bamboo and metal.

4.3 Analysis Finishing materials for wood works, bamboo and metal are the following:
A. Sandpaper – It is made of grits, usually ground silica, flint, quartz, or enemy
glued to thick paper or cloth. Sand paper for wood is called flint paper and for
metal it is called emery cloth, at present we have water proof abrasive for
metal. Both are used for smoothing rough surface of projects.
B. Shellac – It is a good finish for many projects. It comes from the excreta of
insects called a luc bug. The color is yellow and appears like small pieces of
cellophane. Before it is used, it is mixed with denatured alcohol. Apply
shellac on a bright sunny day.
C. Varnish – It is another finishing material that beautifies and preserved a
project. It is made from copal gum dissolved in pure boiled linseed oil. Copal
gum comes from resin of pine trees buried several feet below the ground.
D. Paint – Paint is another finishing material that is always used because of its
beautiful color and a good protector of materials. The body of paint is a
mixture of four elements: pigment, vehicle, thinner and drier.
E. Lacquer – This is a synthetic product which is largely used in all
manufactured articles. This finishing material could retain the natural color of
the material to which it is applied.
F. Stain (Tina) – Stain is a coloring material which is applied to the surface of
wood to improve its appearance. There are three kinds of stain: all stain,
water stain, and spirit stain. When you mix the dye (tina) with petroleum, the
result is all stain. When the dye is mixed with water, it is now a water stain.
When the dye is mixed with alcohol, the mixture is called spirit stain.
G. Glue – Glue is paste for wood materials. It is in powder or in cake form. It is
manufactured from fish, animals, and plastic resin.

4.4 Abstraction What are the different finishing materials needed in wood works, bamboo and metal
that help enhanced the products?
Why is it important for finished products?

4.5 Application Group Activity. Conduct a survey on the different finishing materials used by
manufacturers of wood, bamboo and metal in your community.
(Guide questions may vary depending on available product in the community).

also on its aesthetic appearance. It is important therefore to maintain the good quality
of the product, not only on the quality of workmanship but also the enhanced
appearance of the product through the decorations applied on its surface. The
following are the processes in enhancing or decorating products:

1. Sketching – freehand drawing on the surface of the product.

2. Shading – creating shades of lights and dark patterns in a composition or
design
3. Outlining – drawing in which the only contours of a product is seen
4. Carving – forming a design by cutting
5. Smoothening – the process of removing lint and rough edges on wood.

4.4 Abstraction Why is there a need to enhance or decorate a finished product?

How do you enhance the appearance of your finished product?

4.5 Application Group Activity. Conduct a simple survey of an entrepreneur in industry of woodcraft in
your community. Gather information on the different processes they used in enhancing
or decorating their products. Present the results of your survey in class.
