Contemporary Fine Arts in the

Philippine Regions
The fine arts consist of
architecture, sculpture
and painting.
Some fine arts are in two dimensions where
the material or medium is applied to a flat
surface to create an image.
There are also three dimensional fine arts,
such as architecture and sculpture in ice,
metal, or glass.
Fine arts require the artist the
mastery of use of
material/medium, technique,
and craftsmanship.

ART PRODUCTION

o We take the point of view of the painter who

makes his/her artworks in a particular style.
o Every art-making process is dictated by the
artist’s style.
o The growth of a single artist’s way of
working can be referred to as “the
evolution of style”.
o Styles of art can be thought of as groups.
The significance of style lies in the fact that it
allows the viewer to discern the meaning
behind the subject matter and purpose of the
painting.

Stylistic tendencies

places.

Four Styles that are Based on
Stylistic Tendencies
A. The Style of Objective Accuracy

In objective accuracy, the

artist can do art by being a
detached observer or by
employing a selective eye
The Artist as Detached Observer

The artist present himself/herself as

somebody who selects, arranges, and
represents reality without his/her
identity revealed.
Jose Marie Picornell’s R.R.Landon
The Artist as Selective Eye

The artist must “know” the

subject as well as “see” its
surface characteristics.
Felix Catarata’s The Laughter
Devices for Objective Accuracy

How does one achieve objective accuracy?

1. Correct drawing is the most common

device. It takes mastery acquired through
formal studies and serious practice to
make beautiful artworks.
Marvin Natural’s Remembering Past Mistakes

2. The artist’s control and handling of

illumination help in creating realistic
images.

Sgrafitto technique
– produced by
applying layers of
plaster tinted in
contrasting colors
to a moistened
surface.

3. Focus is achieved through sharpness

or softness, distinctness or vagueness of
form and contour.

4. Color is a powerful instrument. It is

mainly connected with the description
of the objects.

5. Perspective is the pictorial device

that relates to the artist’s ability to
create the illusion of deep space within
the painting.
B. The Style of Formal Order

Formal order in contemporary

art is associated with stability
and permanence.
Qualities of Formal Order

1. Intellectual order – it is clearly

applied in painting. This style is
visible in cubism where an
intellectual method of analyzing
forms is employed by the
painter.
Vicente Manansala
C. The Style of Emotion

Themes of emotion, feeling,

romance are common features in
painting.
D. The Style of Fantasy

The artist creates strange forms

or allows himself/herself to
experience creative process that
leads to fantastic outputs.
