Section 2
Design Criteria
2.1. Codes and Standards
All procedures taken were in accordance with the following codes and standards:
According to Section 310.4 of the 2020 FBC and Table 1.5.1 of ASCE 7-16, this
structure classifies as Residential Group R-2 and Risk Category II due to its future
function as a residential building.
2.3. Loads
The structure was appropriately designed for four types of loads: dead load (D),
live load (L), earthquake load (E), and wind load (W).
The dead load shall include the self-weight of all permanent structural
components (e.g., the beams and columns) and the superimposed dead load (SDL), the
self-weight of all permanent non-structural components (e.g., architectural features [e.g.,
facades and interior partitions] and mechanical systems [e.g., HVAC and plumbing
systems]). Table 1 presents the SDL associated with different occupancy types. Note that
Table 1 does not include the SDL associated with the structure’s façade, which is
assumed to be 20 psf.
The live load shall include all transient loads that are present when the structure is
being occupied or used. Table 1 presents the live load associated with different
occupancy types.

The earthquake loads are in accordance with Section C12.8 of ASCE 7-16 and
Section 1613.3 of the 2020 FBC. As per the ASCE 7 Hazard tool, the location of the site is
classified as Site Class C soil and Ss and S1 to be 0.04 and 0.02, respectively.
Per Table 11.6-1 and 11.6-2 of ASCE 7-16, the seismic design category of the site
was classified as Category A. ASCE 7-16 states that structures assigned to Category A
are excluded from providing seismic design requirements. However, these requirements
were still considered for this project for academic purposes.
The wind loads are in accordance with Section 27.2 of ASCE 7-16 and Section
1620 of the 2020 FBC. An ultimate design wind speed of 175 mph and Exposure Type C
was used in the calculations for wind load accommodations, per Florida Building Code
2020.
Table 2 and 3 present the load combinations that will be used for checking design
strength. The description of the load combinations are as follows:
● LRFD-01 to LRFD-05 and ASD-01 to ASD-07 are the limit states generally used in
strength design
● LRFD-06 and LRFD-07 and ASD-08 to ASD-10 are the limit states used for
considering the effects of seismic loads in strength design

The global performance criteria consist of the interstory drift, the displacement of
the tower top, and the P-Delta effect.
Interstory drift is the deflection of any floor with respect to the one below it. Steps
will be taken to minimize this type of deformation because it can harm the structure's
nonstructural components, stability, and performance (with regards to the members'
inelastic strains). Table 4 presents the interstory drift limits for structures experiencing
seismic- or wind-related events. It's important to note that the design wind event used for
the limit has a 50-year mean recurrence interval (i.e., return period).
8
Table 4. Allowable Story Drift
Condition Limit
Seismic Δ ≤ 1/400
Wind Δ ≤ 1/50
References: ASCE 7-16 (Table 12.12-1 and Section CC.2.2)
The P-Delta effect refers to the second-order effect that occurs in all structures
experiencing both axial loading and lateral, or horizontal, deformations. In the case of the
proposed structure, the gravity load will create a secondary moment that'll magnify the
lateral deformations caused by wind or seismic loads. There are two types of P-delta
effects: P-"big" delta (P-Δ) and P-"small" (P-δ) delta. The former considers the
displacements of joints and can result in the "loss of lateral resistance, ratcheting of
residual deformations, and dynamic instability" (Deierlein et al. 2010). The latter, on the
other hand, considers the deformation of individual members with respect to their joints
and can cause buckling at these members. Both are influenced by how large the axial
load is, how slender each member is, and how slender or stiff the overall structure is.
To account for this effect, the analysis done will follow section 6.2.5.3 of ACI 318-
19 and ensure that the second-order factored moment isn't more than 1.4 times larger
than the first order factored moment.

Table 6 shows all the materials used for each component in the structure along
with their respective properties.

Section 3
Structural System
This section consists of a description of both the gravity force and lateral force
resisting systems and their respective Revit model drawings.
The gravity force resisting system is designed to resist the forces of gravity acting
on the structure. The primary components of the structure designed to resist gravity
forces are the beams, floor slabs and columns. Two-way slabs were utilized on every
floor, concrete columns were placed at each grid line intersection except for core, where
shear walls were utilized. In Figure 3, the components utilized for the GFRS are
highlighted.
The lateral force resisting system is designed to resist lateral forces acting on the
system. The primary forces considered when designing the structural components are
wind and seismic forces. Slabs can also be considered as resisting lateral forces due to
in-plane/diaphragm action; however they are not highlighted as primary components of
11
the LFRS. The main components of the LFRS system are the shear walls and link beams,
as highlighted in Figure 4.
12
Section 4
Analysis of Global Performance
This section discusses the analysis done using ETABS 2017 Ver. 17 to verify the
structure’s performance.
Figure 5 presents the finite element model used to test the performance of the
proposed structure. Table 6 displays the structural components used in designing the
model and their corresponding finite element.
Figure 5. Isometric view of the global finite element model creating using ETABS 2017.
13
There were two models created on ETABS: a service model and an ultimate model.
Although both reveal findings pertaining to the structure’s overall performance, the
service model considers service wind conditions while the ultimate model examines
ultimate seismic and wind conditions.
Cracking is expected to occur when the tensile stress exceeds the modulus of
rupture, which, according to ACI 318-19 Section 19.2.3.1, is 6λ√f’C. For this project, the
modulus of rupture is 6*1*√(7000psi) or 502 psi. If it does occur, then adjustments will be
made to the property modifiers that control each model’s link beams and shear walls.
Table 6 displays what the property modifiers are for each model, depending on whether
cracking occurs or not. Figures 6 and 7 illustrate the result of the analysis performed to
check for cracking in both models.

4.3. Tower Deformations Under Seismic and Wind Conditions
The interstory drift of the structure was analyzed based on the seismic and wind
conditions. Both are lateral forces that cause displacement along the vertical span of the
structure. The images below provide a visual description of how each floor of the building
reacts to each of the two lateral forces along subsequent floors. As expected, the vertical
deflection of the structure increases as the structure increases in height.
Figures 11 and 12 illustrate the interstory drift experienced by the model due to
seismic and wind activity. These figures also indicate whether or not the structure will
follow ASCE 7-16 Section 12.12.1 and Appendix CC.2.2.

Section 5
Design of Structural Components
This section provides insight into the processes used to design the structure’s
slabs, beams, column, walls, link beams, and foundation.
5.1. Slabs
The slabs were designed under strength and serviceability considerations using
SAFE 2016. Table 8 presents the slab thicknesses for each floor of the structure. These
dimensions were determined by analyzing the deflections that occurred when each slab
underwent the loads presented in Table 1 and procedures discussed in ASCE 7-16.
To verify the considerations made, further analysis was done on floor 2 and 3’s
slab, whose aerial and isometric views are shown in Figures 14 and 15, respectively.
Subsections 6.1.1 and 6.1.2 will briefly discuss the verifications done.

Figures 16 and 17 present the flexural strength required by column and middle
strips in the x- and y- directions, respectively. Figures 18 and 19 illustrate the rebar
intensities determined for the top and bottom reinforcement in the x- and y- directions,
respectively. Appendix F contains sample calculations that verify the intensities that were
on column strip D and between column strips 5 and 6.

24
Figure 20 shows the punching shear ratios tabulated in SAFE. Note that the values
shown are below 1, indicating that the slab will not require punching shear reinforcement.
Appendix G provides sample calculations for the punching shear ratio at column D6.

5.2 Beams
The five beams located in the core of each floor (Figure 26) were analyzed and
designed using SAFE 2016. Figure 27 illustrates the moments exhibited in the beams and
28
the reinforcement required to resist bending. Figures 28, on the other hand, displays the
shear forces experienced by the beams and the reinforcement required to resist those
forces. Appendix H presents the hand calculations done for an 8” x 18” beam to verify
what was done by SAFE.

29
Figure 28. Shear forces (kips) in and shear reinforcements required (in2/ft) for the beams.
5.3 Columns
The columns were designed using a macro-enabled Excel file that consisted of
various input parameters relating to the building parameters, column properties, and
proposed occupancies. When these values were put in, the file would determine the
expected service and ultimate loads and check the inputted reinforcement details. These
checks performed by the Excel file are accompanied by other decisions that aimed to
increase the efficiency of the design and construction processes. For example, it was
decided early on that the concrete grade and rebar used for any column on a given floor
must be the same as the ones used for the remaining columns on that floor.
Appendix C includes all of the inputs used and outputs determined in the Excel file.
Appendix D provides sample calculations that verify the strength and slenderness of the
ground floor portion of column E1.
Furthermore, the most vulnerable columns in the structure were analyzed for their
adequacy in combined axial and flexural demand. The columns located below roofs and
terraces were considered the weakest and most vulnerable for this analysis. This is
because they possess a lower flexural capacity due to the low axial load they are
resisting. Despite having a flexural capacity that is lower than the rest of the columns in
the structure, these select columns still resist a similar unbalanced moment. Therefore,
they must be analyzed to identify whether additional reinforcement is required.
The figures below indicate the four columns selected for axial and flexural
verification. As shown, two edge columns and corner columns were selected, one below
the roof and another below the 4th floor terrace.
30
Figure 29. Columns D1 and E1 (located below the roof) were selected for verification.
Figure 30. Columns D7 and E7 (located below the 4th floor terrace) were selected for
verification.
31
It is assumed that so long as the most vulnerable columns do not require further
reinforcement, then the rest of the columns within the structure are adequately designed.
The table below displays each columns’ axial loads and moments in both the X- and Y-
direction. The values were taken from the SAFE models while considering both LRFD-01
and LRFD-02 combinations.
For each column, their performance was analyzed using the spColumn software,
which was set to ACI 318-14. Each column’s interaction diagram is displayed below.

33
Figure 34. Interaction diagram for column E7 (located below the 4th floor terrace).
5.4 Walls
The shear walls were designed using ETABS 17 with the understanding that they
will resist the lateral loads imposed on the structure. Figures 35, 36, and 37 shows the
longitudinal reinforcement, shear reinforcement, and reinforcement ratios required,
respectively. As mentioned in the previous section, the column design process consisted
of checks that improved the efficiency of the design and construction processes. Similar
checks were made when designing shear walls since they are essentially columns that
span a longer distance.

The link beams were designed using ETABS 17 with the understanding that they
will connect the shear walls on both sides of the core. Figures 38 and 39 show the shear
forces and moments exhibited in the link beams. Tables 12 and 13 show the
reinforcements required to resist flexure and shear, respectively. Note that the link beams
on the north and south sides are also known as link beams 1 and 2, respectively.
Appendix E verifies the flexural and shear strength of floor 4’s second link beam. The
calculations completed in that appendix also detail the reinforcements required to
strengthen that link beam.

Bar extension past point of maximum moment = (38 – 3)in = 35 in hook required
New development length given hook is calculated per ACI 25.4.3.1
Dowel placement
→ Although factored load does not exceed allowable bearing pressure, minimum
dowel must be provided per ACI 16.3.4.1.
→ Per ACI 25.5.5.4, dowel must extend into column a distance equal to the greater
of the two:
→ Dowels are to extend at least 23 inches into the column and 14 inches into the
footing while hooked.
