The Legend of Onion

According to legend, Buyas was the daughter of a tribal healer living in

the foothills of the Sierra Madre. Buyas is just a little girl and her
sensitivity is already noteworthy. She became more sensitive when her
youngest sister was born. Her sister is more beautiful compared to Buyas
so their difference is immediately noticed.

Usually, there are many people that arrive in their hut because their
father cures many patients. Therefore, they keep noticing the sisters
because the hut is only small and that's where their father is treating
patients too.

"Your youngest is so beautiful," they often say.

"is also beautiful," her mother also often heard. Buyas really don't like to
hear this kind of conversation. She immediately goes behind their hut
and spends the time draining her tears.

When Buyas reach puberty, she fell in love with a handsome young
man. The problem is that the young man wanted her younger sister.

Buyas is always in pain everytime the young man is at their hut courting
her younger sister. She will hide in their backyard and there she will cry
with her emotions.

Her mother knows how Buyas feels but she can't do anything! She can't
be interfering with the young man's heart. Also, what about the feelings
of her youngest child?
After several months, the young man brings his parents to ask for the
hands of Buyas sister. The two want to marry in the second full moon.

Buyas extremely felt sadness with the loss of her love.

The next morning, Buyas was no longer found. She apparently

disappeared like bubbles.

One morning, while their mother was sweeping in the backyard she
noticed a plant growing there. When their mother pulled it to plant it
somewhere better, she noticed the circular fruit.

The mother also found out that it can be an ingredient in food. But above
all, she found the fruit make her cry when cut.

She then recalled her daughter Buyas. She named the plant Buyas after
her daughter.

Buyas became sibuyas (Onion in English) after a long time.
