A PROFILE FOR TORNADOES

(A NATURAL PHENOMENON)
GROUP 5
Where does this kind
of event occur?
Tornadoes occur on:
All continents except
Antarctica
Most common in the middle
latitudes
The United States has the
most tornadoes of any
country
What causes the
natural phenomenon?
A tornado forms from a large
thunderstorm. Inside thunderclouds,
warm, humid air rises, while cool air falls-
-along with rain or hail. ... Although the
spinning currents start out horizontal,
they can turn vertical and drop down
from the cloud--becoming a tornado.
How much warning is there?
There are six existing tornado warnings based on
the Enhanced Fujita Scale.

EF RATING WIND SPEED DAMAGE

EF - 0 65 - 85 MPH LIGHT
EF - 1 86 - 110 MPH MODERATE
EF - 2 110 - 135 MPH CONSIDERABLE
EF - 3 136 - 165 MPH SEVERE
EF - 4 166 - 200 MPH DEVASTATING
EF - 5 200+ MPH INCREDIBLE
EF - 0
65 - 85 MPH

EF - 1 Can it cause damage

86 - 110 MPH to people and the
EF - 2 environment?
110 - 135 MPH
If so, what sort of
EF - 3
136 - 165 MPH damage can it cause?
EF - 4 Yes, tornadoes can cause damage to
166 - 200 MPH
people and the environment.
EF - 5
200+ MPH
How are different people
(e.g., students, farmers, laborers,
and office employees)
affected when a natural event
strikes your country?
Who will be the most affected?

All of the people within the area or community will

be affected by the tornado. Children and older
people will be the most affected.
Do reported natural
phenomenon affect
people at all times?
Tornadoes may not be the most
dangerous natural phenomenon but it
is better to be ready and to have
knowledge about it.
How strong are the most damaging events?
List 5 examples.

"Tri-State Tornado"
(March 18, 1925)
"St. Louis Tornado"
(May 27, 1896)

"Natchez Tornado"
(May 6, 1840)
"Tupelo Tornado"
(April 5, 1936)

"Gainesville Tornado"
(April 6, 1936)
Why do people live in
areas affected by
natural hazards?
Because of their ancestors and the
place is too valuable for them.
Economic reasons.

People are relying more on their

intuition instead of acquiring scientific
knowledge to mitigate disasters.
How could people live in
areas affected by
natural hazards strike?
The most ideal approach to adapt to a
catastrophic event is to get ready by having
a preparation before it strikes and to
distinguish the kinds of disaster you are
presented to, the probability of these
happening and their expected effect.
