2. Discuss how being a Filipino affects your “self.” How can becoming a better Filipino influence
your duty to becoming a better version of yourself?

A nation’s culture resides in the hearts and souls of its people. In our case, Filipinos are known
to have had a great cultural heritage tracing back to its numerous foreign colonizers. Historically
speaking, each colonizer left an imprint to what and who we are known today. An individual’s
background and origin primarily affects one’s identity and characteristics as he interacts with other
people in the society.

There are a number of positive and negative characteristics associated with Filipinos as a whole.
Integrating such in one’s personal value system is integral in his or her holistic development of. It is
very important to note that in the selection of such values, filtration and selection of the best
principles is quite essential. In my case, I still have a lot of traits that needs improvement and
alteration if needed. If I will evaluate myself on the standards of a better Filipino, I am still at the
below average level. To improve this, I need to integrate the positive characteristics of Filipinos. In
particular, having a close family tie, becoming hospitable, and having a positive outlook in life are
some of the best features of a typical Filipino.

Contrary to this, I also need to look into the negative traits the people of our nation is known for
like the mañana habit, ningas kugon, crab mentality and the colonial mentality which is very
prevalent among millennials. I am aware that sometimes, the aforementioned negatives appear in
my daily life. And it’s all up to me if I will neglect it or not. As a whole, by becoming aware of the
pros and cons of what and who we really are, what I need to do now is to apply this in my system so
that I can improve my skills and traits resulting to becoming a better self, a better Filipino, and a
better Henry.
