What Is Gypsum?
Gypsum is a chalk like material and is very light in weight. It is available in crystalline form in
nature.
In recent years, the construction sector has witnessed a number of new trends, technology
advancements and innovations across applications, all aimed at making construction faster
Also Read : How to Apply Gypsum Plaster on Wall for More Information on Surface Preparation,
Application Procedure, Finish etc.
1. Ease of Application (Workability): Gypsum can be directly applied over brick/block work
without separate nishing. It is also very easy to apply and level gypsum plaster.
3. Quick Setting Time: Gypsum sets quickly (i.e., within 25-30 mins). So painting could be
started 72 hours after application of gypsum plaster. Plaster has to be dried up before
painting.
4. No curing time required: Unlike Traditional Cement Plaster, Gypsum plaster doesn’t need
any curing saving water and time during construction
6. High Performance: Excellent high strength after drying, Durable and Light weight
(Reduces dead load on structure)
7. Smooth Finish: Perfectly lined, levelled, smooth walls and perfect right angled corners
8. Reduced Supervision: Careful quality checking is required for cement plaster as cement
and sand has to be properly proportioned. In contrast, gypsum plaster doesn’t require
same amount of quality checks for application thus reducing supervision efforts.
9. Readily available raw materials: Gypsum is a ready available material. Natural Sand,
which is a raw material used in Traditional cement plaster, is hard to obtain. It is also
banned in multiple states in India
11. Low thermal conductivity: Gypsum has low thermal conductivity. This saves electrical
cost for heating and cooling rooms in a building.
12. Decorative application: It can be easily applied to decorative purposes also and can be
mould into different shapes
■ Gypsum plaster cannot be used for outside walls since they retain dampness. Also gypsum
plastering cannot be done in areas which are continuously damp such as bathroom etc.,
■ Gypsum plaster is costlier than traditional cement motar plaster (cement and sand) for
same thickness of plaster. But in areas where natural/river sand is not available for
construction, cement mortar plastering would require a 6 mm gypsum layer to nish it making
cement plaster more costly.
Exposure to water or moisture reduces the setting time and strength of gypsum plaster. So
gypsum has to be stored properly.
■ Gypsum Plaster (POP) bags has to be stored on elevated surface (dry platform) made of
bricks/timber/concrete at site.
■ The minimum shelf life of Gypsum Plaster 3-4 months from the date of manufacture. But if
properly stored gypsum can be use in excessive of 6 months subject to temperature and
humidity.

To check quality of plaster which has already been applied and hardened the following
can be done
a.To check the line and level use straight edge tool and/or plumb
b.To check surface adhesion(di-bonding) do “Tap Test” (hammer tapping test). Any di-
bonding with wall will give hollow sound.

Indian standard ,IS : 2547 ( Part I ) – 1976 SPECIFICATION FOR GYPSUM BUILDING
PLASTER,recommends gypsum plaster in place of a cement – sand plaster.
Gypsum plaster is classified as follows
a) Plaster of paris,
b) Retarded hemihydrate gypsum plaster
Type I – Under coat:
a) Browning plaster b) Metal lathing plaster
Type II-Final coat plaster
a) Finish plaster b) Board finish plaster,
c) Anhydrous gypsum plasters are for finishing only, and
d) Keene’s plaster is for finishing only.
Retarded hemihydrate gypsum plaster and Anhydrous gypsum plasters are available in
packed powder form.
Gypsum (plasters) are applied on internal hardened/cured concrete wall or Brick wall
substrate ,they don’t get involved in any chemical reaction.

Both Indian and Imported gypsum usually comply with IS 2547-1. But they might vary in
the individual parameters that are tested in laboratory. Following are the parameters
tested for gypsym plaster:
We would rather advice you to buy gypsum plaster after checking the test certificate
rather than just buying Imported gypsum and paying premium on it.

After having gone through your replies that Gypsum can be used directly on brick walls
instead of sand cement plaster. I am constructing an independent house having
common walls with neighbors, adjacent houses are not built yet. I have a query that
when my neighbors do construction and do curing on common walls (in case they use
sand and cement plaster), will the moisture on common walls effect my side of Gypsum
plaster.
HAPPHO_ADMIN7
AUGUST 21, 2017 AT 5:08 PM
Case-1: If the common wall is not finished on the external side (i.e., neighbours side),
then chances are there that water might seep in. IF you do external plaster with
waterproofing compound mixed, then you can use Gypsum plaster on your internal
side.
Case-2: If you are not finishing the external side of the wall, it is highly advised not to go
with gypsum plaster as the wall is prone to water seepage.
But we would strongly advice you to do waterproofed external cement plaster on the
common wall (exterior side) i.e., Case-1.

Yes, We recommend you to apply Gypsum Plaster for all internal wall directly on flyash

Strength is not a criteria for determining which type of plaster to be used. Interms of
durability, both Gypsum plaster and cement plaster are at par.
When we compare interms of Finish, we would rate gypsum plaster better than cement
plaster as you get smooth and better finishing with gypsum plaster.

Your question is not clear. Gypsum is used as a plastering material on the top of brick
wall or can be installed as gypsum boards (dry partitions) between walls.
In both the cases, you can hang a watch because it doesn’t weigh much.
Storage racks cannot be hanged on dry gypsum wall partitions as they cannot take the
weight. They can be installed on wall plastered with Gypsum.

Yes, Gypsum can be used for Internal Roof Plastering. But Gypsum is not leak proof. IF

Incase of terraces, usually brick bat is done to provide slope to the concrete roof after
the waterproofing is done. This brick bat thickness usually varies from 125 mm to 150
mm thick. Brick bat usually acts as an insulation layer to the buildings.
Cement sand plaster is usually done to protect the waterproofing layer on the terrace
surface. We don’t recommend using gypsum plaster there.

Yes, you can do apply a second layer or coat of gypsum plaster. But ensure that you
properly hack the first coat (to provide grip or adhesion of the second layer with the first
layer). Also ensure that the thickness of both the gypsum plasters combined shall not
exceed 25mm thick.
Its advisable to keep the second coat to a minimum of 6-8 mm if you are just correcting
the undulations.

Gypsum although a much older material than the cement & sand plaster has rarely been used
extensively in construction industry. Now a days, Gypsum has proved to be a miraculous
material aiding interior construction due to its properties.
Plaster of Paris is obtained by pulverizing the gypsum (calcium sulphate hemihydrate CaSO4
0.5H2O) which is heated to a temperature of 150 deg centigrade.
Upon addition of water, Plaster of Paris (POP) becomes regular gypsum (dihydrate) again
causing the resultant material to harden. This hardening material can be used to create moulds
for casting and in construction.
When dry POP powder is mixed with water it hardens. This material which can be applied over
brick, block or concrete surface to form a smooth surface is called gypsum plaster.
Earlier, a 6 mm coat of gypsum plaster (termed as POP punning) is usually applied on the top of
cement plaster to give a smooth finish to it before painting. This is a two stage process and
involves various elements like sand, cement and water which has to be mixed onsite. This
process is slowly being replaced by a direct application of single coat of gypsum plaster. In
gypsum plaster, readymade POP powder is mixed with water and applied directly on the wall.
Gypsum Plaster can be applied directly on any brick, solid or hollow blocks, AAC blocks and
plaster boards. Gypsum plaster has good insulation properties, fire resistant and impact
resistant. Also, gypsum saves a lot of time during construction and has superior finish. These
properties have clearly drawn attention of real estate builders and contractors towards
choosing gypsum plaster over traditional cement plaster.
