1.      What are the challenges these Cities are facing? What do you think are the best possible
solutions?

·         The significant rise in the city population as people flock towards cities trying
their luck to improve their financial status. However, not all who migrate to cities are
rewarded for many end up contributing to the slum populace.
·         Globalization creates a rush of high paying jobs within global cities creating a
chain reaction demanding low income employment to attend to their growing needs.
These low income jobs comprise of domestic helpers, maids, cooks, food
attendants. Thus, implying that flocking to global cities does necessarily mean a
good life for everyone.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION (1 & 2):  Government should implement job opportunities for
people living in provinces or if it is impossible, may be they should create more
opportunity jobs in the cities so that the people trying their luck in the cities would not
end up contributing to the slum populace. They should be the one to take care of their
people and prioritize its poor citizens that badly need a job. They should educate every
individual so that at the end of the day, they can have their own jobs. But, people also
do their part as people that has daily needs and not just to let the government feed them
and be lazy because the government has nothing to do with people that can’t even help
themselves to thrive. Although poverty is part of our lives and we can’t deny the fact that
there are more poor people than those rich, at least with the help of our government, we
can possibly prevent the rising of poverty.

·         Due to significant rise in the population, several issues spring out which leads to
food and water shortage. Many people still go hungry as food is unevenly distributed
all over the world bringing into questions of global food security.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION: Government should give full support to your local farmers,
fishers, water distributors, and other suppliers of our food and water. They should not
neglect them especially the farmers that suffered in financial assistance. In a vlog that I
watched in Youtube, many Filipino farmers calling out for help and begging our
government to support them in terms of irrigation and other primary needs during their
planting because many businessmen bought their products cheap and sometimes they
have no choice but to sell it just to get them back their investment. The point is,
globalization make poor people poorer and rich people richer. On the other hand,
government also improve its system in global food security because sometimes the rice
that should have been distributed to poor people got stocked and they just let it spoil.

·         The problem about climate change and rising temperatures. Cities are
considered as the greatest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions and climate
change affects more people than others for some are more equipped to handle the
effects of climate change.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION:  We should know how to minimize using chemicals that might
affect our environment such as burning plastics and other harmful things. Although it is
hard especially in cities that are prone in different vehicles, industries and companies
that produce gas that causes air pollution, we should be responsible enough in our
actions because at the end of the day, we are the one that will be affected. Instead of
using motorcycles, it is better to use a bike if our destination is near and instead of
burning plastic we should recycle it. Those simple and small things would be big
collectively. Therefore I conclude, we should start the change within ourselves and start
it today before everything’s too late.

2.      What do you think is/are the impact of urbanization and the rise of Global Cities on
agricultural sectors?

-          For me, urbanization and the rise of Global Cities has a lot of impact on
agricultural sectors. It can affect most of the agricultural lands and lots of farmers
because instead of using it in planting rice, corn, sugar cane, etc., businessmen and
other government officials used it to build infrastructures and buildings for their
businesses. According to The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and
Social Science “Urbanization and rising buying power have moved Americans up the
food chain. The demand for expensive animal products grows. These forces have
resulted in a dramatic escalation of solid waste production in cities and on farms.
Urbanization and transformed agriculture have exploded the organic matter cycle.”
Government also used it to build housing projects, schools and universities, among
others. Then, the forests are full of towering trees, now bald because of mining
projects, deforestation caused by kaingin, and even forest fires caused by climate
change and global warming. In addition, urbanization and the rise of Global Cities
creates landslides, floods, even pollution that might create diseases, and it destroys
our ozone layer that brings heat in our atmosphere. But, we can’t blame Mother
Nature for its revenge because we caused all of these calamities. We as humans, with
intellect and wisdom from God, we already knew what the consequences of our
actions are. All we need to do right now is to think, plan, and implement programs on
how to recover our Mother Nature, especially our agricultural lands which is the
source of our daily needs. Therefore I conclude that change is natural, but we should
not forget to develop and preserve our Mother Nature so that the next generation will
still see the beauty of it.
