Recreation consists of activities or experiences carried on within leisure, usually
chosen voluntarily by the participant either because of satisfaction, pleasure or creative enrichment derived, or because he perceives certain personal or social values to be gained from them. It may, also be perceived as the process of participation, or as the emotional state derived from involvement.
The psychology behind the recreational/leisure activity is different for different
people. For some people it is a way of rewarding themselves after a tiring week. For others it is the quality time they spend with their families which gives them sense of satisfaction. So they take their family to recreational space to see them enjoy. Some wants to spend their weekends in some pleasant environment away from their regular monotonous life.
As an architects we design recreation spaces for people, hence it is important to know
human psychology by observing their behavior to various activities. So that by our design we can fulfil their needs. Human behavior depends on various factors like social and physical condition of environment, their surrounding, their mental and physical health. Participation in leisure activities is associated with various components of successful aging, including physical health and well-being. Leisure participation helps in the improvement of overall well being of individuals whether it is mental or physical well-being. When we enjoy or are happy our body releases happy hormones such as dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. And, we feel energetic and enthusiastic. Recreational activities help people to work more effectively and productively. This in turn releases the feel good hormones.
