The National University of Sciences and Technology (abbreviated as NUST ) is under the
supervision of Pakistan Armed Forces. Its main campus is in Islamabad, Known as H-12. It was created
in 1991 for the need of commissioned officers and then it was made a public research university.
NUST claims to be the number-1 university of Pakistan. NUST is ranked #355 in QS Global World
Rankings 2021 and ranked #83 in Asian countries. NUST has several other campuses in Karachi,
Risalpur, Rawalpindi providing the schools of (PNEC), (CAE, MCE), (MCS, MECE) respectively. Its motto
is “Defining Futures”. Approximately 17000+ students graduated from NUST. It provides all the
education pertinent to science, technology, engineering and industrialization. Its main campus H-12
sector initiated in2008 includes School of Civil and Enviromental Engineering, School of Electrical
Engineering and Computer Sciences (SEECS) . This time NUST has opened its campus in Quetta,
Balochistan. This campus is named as NUST Balochistan Campus (NBC). NUST Balochistan Campus
(NBC) was inaugurated on September 13, 2019, by Qamar Javed Bajwa, Mr. Jam Kamal Khan,
Senators, MNAs and MPAs. The Balochistan Campus is under construction in Chagi Road,
Cantonment Quetta, Balochistan but the temporary location is Zamzama road, Quetta Cantt. The new
construction is on about 80-acre land which is fascinating and the panorama would be spectacular
after construction. NBC has only two departments which enumerates as Civil Engineering and
Computer Science. NBC has only two batches and it accounts me in second batch.

The admission test of NUST is called NET (stands for Nust Admission Test), which is held 3-
times a year. Candidates can apply for all these three tests and can give it according to their vicinity in
their location. It is best thing of NUST that it counts that result in which an applicant has the greatest
score. In 2020, when NUST arranged its NET-3, it gave me a chance to enroll in it. My sister, one year
elder, informed me about NET-3. Afterwards the admission forms were filled and preparations were
made in order to pass the test. I applied for the Balochistan Campus. It was regarded as the most
arduous task and a challenging question for me. The most threatening thing was that calculators were
not allowed and all the calculations has to be done my mind. The total marks were 200 and time to
solve the questions were only 3-hours. It took me at least 1 month to prepare for test. The test date
was announced to be on 2nd September. Dealing with all the perplexities, I entered the examination
hall and set for the test without calculators that irritated me. However, being optimistic I prayed to
pass it. Afterwards one day I got an e-mail that I have passed the test which was the fruit of my hard
work. The fee was filled and they called up for The Orientation Day.

The Orientation Day is an introductory day which was held in 19th October and all the
students were asked to bring their associated documents with affidavits and submit it in the Exam
Branch. As I was enrolled in Civil Engineering, so a feeling of disapproval passes inside me that made
me bewildered. This field is commonly regarded as the concern for boys but when I found a girl
Zubaida from Turbat then I felt satisfaction to some extent. It was expected that the administration
will organize Orientation Day on its new campus which was under construction. Haplessly, due to
COVID-19 the construction work lingered otherwise we would be enjoying our campus there. It was
despairing for me that the main campus is still not ready and we have to study on that barren and
arid land without good construction. On that day, our Head of the Department (HOD), who was Dr.
Raja Shamir Nizam, enlightened about some of the SOPs and mandates to follow e.g. plagiarism is
outlawed and proper dressing is rudimentary for boys and girls. The HOD introduced us with our
Dean and other faculty staff. There were arrangements of mess made for students after orientation.
We all relished the food and then returned to our homes.

Although university life has its own amusements and jollities but here we have to study by
our own. Teachers just give us abstractions and concepts which is totally different from schools or
colleges. Following that, on the next day the classes started. First day of the university is exciting and
breath taking but strenuous as well. First day passed and then first week passed, we were only two
girls and then two new girls came in the following weeks. Now we are four friends doing our break
together, and doing our assignments together. I am a day scholar and my other three friends are
hostelites. We enjoy good time together.

In addition, NBC has its own hostel for boys and girls separately. These hostels are not
inside the university as it is just a temporary location. Girls have their hostel named “Fatima Hostel”.
Students have a lot of complaints about food, heaters, water, transport and recreation. The best
thing about NBC is that it organizes Student Advisory Sessions (SAS) on weekly basis. So that all the
students either day scholar like me or hostelite can discuss their problems with their respected
teachers.

Apart from academic activities and tests, NBC also tries to pay heed towards student’s
healthy mind and for this purpose organizes events and co-curricular activities. It has been only four
weeks but we have got many occasions to cherish. The occasion was that when Shahid Khan Afridi,
the national cricketer of Pakistan, came to NBC and addressed to the students. Afridi, the victor and
the paragon of our hearts, also took selfies and pictures with students and faculty staff. The day was
amused by everyone including me.

Furthermore, NBC scheduled a day for hiking on Saturday, 7th November at Sun Set View.
They hoarded only 300/- from each student which was quite adjustable and reasonable. They called
on to get to the university at 7:45 AM. All the day scholars came on time without being late including
me but we had to wait till 9 o’ clock. Due to hostelites, the bus came at 9 o’ clock, first it dropped off
hostelites and then it picked us up and we set for our destination. Everybody looked awesome in
his/her dressing and make up. We reached our destination at Sun Set View Quetta which had an
irresistible and enchanting panorama. We came down from bus and met with other friends there.
Selfies and pictures were captured in alluring styles and poses. At about 10 o’ clock we set for hiking.
It was 4 km high but after all we completed our journey in that sweltering day although it was
November. At our destination, we meet up with Dean and his family. The item for lunch was Biryani
everyone’s favorite. It was served and eaten by everyone as we all were hungry and weary. After
some rest, photo shoots were arranged. Afterwards, we all got ready to go to the bottom of the
mountain again and took our bags. Counting from 4 km going up and 4 km coming down, we covered
8 km distance in total. That was quite wearing day for everyone but adventurous as well.

In addition, NUST has coordinated a sports week starting from 12 th November. This gives
an opportunity to all the students to manifest his/her athletic quality. Different matches ranging from
indoor to outdoor games were organized. The games may include cricket, volley ball, basketball,
throw ball, bat Minton and table tennis. Indoor games were arranged mainly for girls which included
ludo, carrom board, chess and cards. I participated in no one of them but I enjoyed being a spectator.
The closing ceremony was arranged on Sunday, 15th November. This sports week gave a chance to
enjoy and it sided us from our academic life just for a while.

On the other hand, NUST as it claims to be No. 1 university of Pakistan, it is also very strict
regarding studies and quizzes. NUST has maintained its reputation and it wants its students to be
competitive and hard working. In order to maintain its attributive reputation, it is very strict to the
students. As NUST follows relative grading, so it is difficult to get good grades. For the same purpose,
teachers assign many assignments and home tasks to get through it and learn self-study.

Putting two and two together, it is needed to be quoted that NUST is more than it claims
in every regard. Either it is about learning, building more self-confidence or about facing the world
competitively. It is honor for me to be a nustian. I thank my Allah that he blessed me by making a
nustian.
