School principals are confronted with a variety of issues as they provide leadership
and organization to their schools. On occasion it takes specific leadership behaviors from
the principal to begin to resolve the issues; at other times it takes organizational and
management skills.

Let’s take on a more recent discussion of leadership and management, leaders are
said to describe as being more focused on people while the manager was focused on
tasks. The leader tends to look outward, in a more expansive way whereas the manager’s
focus was inward and on the specific task or tasks that needed to be completed. Both
have their own ways of giving meaning, though they are different but they can be both
necessary for any leaders to acquire such characteristic of being a leader and a manager.
We don’t need to argue with that whether the one weighs better than the other.

While teachers should look to their building principal for strong leadership, they
also depend upon the principal's ability to manage routine day-to-day organizational
tasks. When teachers’ expectations are not met, concern about the principal’s capabilities
begins to surface. Therefore, leadership and management qualities should be both
evident to all school heads. Leadership is a complex, multilayered function essential to
any organization's success. A leader's main purpose is to push an organization forward
and farther, whereas a manager's primary function is to ensure that the organization
operates efficiently. Both are essential to succeed in bringing an organization to succeed.

On deep context, great school leaders and managers know that they are not
running a one-man show; that they cannot do it all alone. They know that they must
surround themselves with great teachers and colleagues and, not only that, they must
fully support teachers and staff by encouraging them to continually learn, develop and,
perhaps most important, become leaders themselves. Committed and effective principals
who remain in their schools are associated with improved leadership and management
qualities.
Somehow we see a leader and a manager as someone who knows what he or she
wants to happen and causes it to happen; is responsible for controlling resources and
ensuring that they are put to good use; promotes effectiveness in work done, and a
search for continual improvement; is accountable for the performance of the unit he or
she is managing, of which he or she is a part; and sets a climate or tone conducive to
enabling people to give of their best.

As a concluded statement, even though a picture is worth a thousand words,

sometimes the right words is just what you need to make it through the day, to inspire
your team or to change your perspective. With this, remember “The ultimate measure of
a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of
challenge and controversy.”
