Piston Rod Runout Correction

Piston rod runout may be either positive or negative. A positive reading indicates the piston
drops as it moves to the head end of the cylinder due to the clearance in the bore. As the piston
drops, the rod rises, yielding a positive reading on the indicator. If the cylinder is not supported
properly, it could droop causing the piston to drop as it moves to the head end of the cylinder. A
negative reading indicates the piston climbs as it moves to the head end of the cylinder. When
the piston climbs, the rod drops, yielding a negative reading. Any reading outside the Ariel rod
runout tolerance requires correction for safe, efficient compressor operation (see appropriate
ER-96.3.x series document). Piston rod runout correction first requires verification (and
correction, if needed) of the crosshead clearance. See flowcharts below.
