Ue 1. Scope UDC 621.882.38 JAPANESE INDUSTRIAL STANDARD JIS Wing nuts B 1185-1994 This Japanese Industrial Standard specifies the metallic wing nuts (hereafter reférred to as “nut"), for general use. 2 Remarks} The standards cited in this Standard are shown in Attached ‘Types Table 5. The nuts shall be classified into 4 types as given in Table 1, ac- cording to shapes and manufacturing methods. Table 1. Types Type Shape Manufacturing method Type 1 ‘An optional method may be employed, Wing ends shall be formed into semicircular shape in OP? Wing ends shall be formed into square shape, Type|3 | High ‘The press working of sheets shape | QT shall be employed ‘These shall he subelassi- Low _ | fied into the high shape tnd the low shape accord- shape | ing to lengths of thread part (3). ‘Type 4 ‘The die casting shall be mn Qe [Baths Hollows on wing parts may not be provided. 2 B 1185-1994 3. Proof torque ‘The nuts when tested in accordance with the specification of 9., shall neither be broken at or under the proof torque of Table 2 nor deform remarkably on wing parts, and in addition, after the proof torque was applied, the nut shall be capable of being disengaged from the bolt with bare fingers. Screw threads The screw threads of the nuts shall be the metric coarse screw threads specified in the main text of JIS B 0205, and their tolerance class shall be 7H (6H for the screw threads of under M3) specified in the main text of JIS B 0209. However, for the time being, the quality 3 (quality 2 for under M3) in the Annex 1 of JIS B 0209 shall be allowed to be used. 3 B 1185-1994 ® Furthermore, the screw thread of tolerance class 3 shall be capable of being easily screwed jn the go thread plug gauge for tolerance class 3 specified in JIS B 0251. However, the accuracy of the hot dipped screw threads shall be as agreed on between the|purchaser and the manufacturer. 6. Appearance The surface of the nuts shall be smooth and free from cracks and defects injurious to use such as flaws, burrs, dents, chippings, and mis- matches, and those nuts having processed with surface treatment of plating and others shall belfree from such defects as blisters and exposures of base metal. Furthermdre, as for the standard of the permissible limit of surface defects, unless otherwise specified, JIS B 1042 should preferably be referred to. 7. Material | The materials of the nuts shall be in accordance with Table 3. 4 B 1185-1994 ‘Table 3, Material Type | Division of Material proof torque ‘Type 1] A Metallic materials, the products made from which shall satisfy and the proof torque A df type 1 or type 2 specified in Table 2. type 2 Examples of Applicable Materials: $8 400 or JIS G 3101 SWRM 8 and SWRM 10 of JIS G 3505 FOMW 330 of JIS G 5703, B Metallic materials, the products made from which shall satisfy the proof torque B of type 1 or type 2 specified in Table 2. Example of Applicable Material: SPCC or SPCD of JIS G 3141 ‘Type 4) - Zine alloy for die east, the products made from which shall satisfy the proof torque of type 4 specified in Table 2 Example of Applicable Materials: 2DC 1 and ZDG 2 of JIS H 5301. 8. Surface treatment, The surface treatment of the nuts shall be as agreed on between the purchaser and the maniifacturer. 9. Proof torque test | In the proof tdrque test of the nuts, screw a test nut on a bolt fitted with washer as given in Fig. 1, and examine, when the torque of Table 2 is applied according to the method of the following (1) or (2), whether the nut is damaged or not and, after the torque is released, whether the nut can be removed from the bolt with bare fingers. In this case, the nut may be loosened for the first half turn by using a hand operating wrench. Furthermore, in case the threads of the bolt are damaged, a retest shall be made after enhancing strength of the threads. co @ (2) Metl by 5 B 1185-1994 ‘ing the bolt Clamp lightly the bolt head assembled as given in Fig. I by the use of a vice or the like to keep it from turning, grip the wings to this. Ih lof the test nut with a jig or the like, and test by applying torque this case, the gripping allowance of the wings shall be the part excluding |the height (C) of the boss [see (1) of Fig. 21. Method by fixing the wing Clamp lightly the wings of the test nut as- sembled a} applying given in Fig. 1 by the use of a vice or the like, and test by rque to this. In this case, the gripping allowance of the wings shall be the part excluding the height (C) of the boss (see (2) of Fig. 2] Remarks 11. If any large clearance exists between the wings of the test nut and the groove of the jig which applies torque (or a tool which fixes the wings), a suitable metallic shim shall be inserted into it as shown in Fig. 3. 2. Apply spindle oil on the entire surfaces of the washer and bolt used for the test. Fig. 1. Inspections Inspections of the|nut shall be as follows. However, the sampling inspection plan for the lot at delivery shall be as agreed on between the purchaser and manufacturer. (1) Inspection on proof torque Inspection on proof torque of the nut shall be made in accordance with the method specified in 9. and the results shall conform to the requirements of 3. (2) Inspection on shapes and dimensions __ Inspection on shapes and dimen- sions of the nut shall be carried oul by the direct measurement, limit gauge or other methods and the results shall conform to the requirements of 4. (3) Inspection on screw thread __Insyection on screw thread of the nut shall be carried out by the screw thread limit gauge for 7H or for quality 3 (for 6H or for quality 2 for the screw threads under M3) specified in JIS B 0251 or screw thread inspecting instrument equivalent to this, and the results shall conform to the requirements of 5. However, the nuts of type 3 shall be inspected by using the go thread plug gauge for quality 3, and the results shall conform to the requirements of 5 (4) Inspection on appearance Inspection on appearance of the nut shall be carted cut by the visual inspection, and the reads shall conform to'the requirements of 6. 11, Designation _The nut shall be designated by the Standard number or the title of Standard, type, designation of screw thread (d), division of proof torque (‘), material (2) and designated items (°). Notes (1) The division of the proof torques shall be indicated by either A or B for the nuts of type 1 and type 2 on the basis of Table 2. (@) The material may also be indicated by its general name. (®) The designatd items shall indicate the type of surface treatment, a wing which is one size larger, and others, as required. 1 Furthermore, in the dase where a wing which is one size larger is designated, the statement (large size) shall be placed after the type.
