1. (a) Find the work involved in moving a charge of 1 C from (6,8,-10) to (3,4,-5)
along a single straight line in the field. E = -x i + Yj + 3 k [8]
(b) Point charges q1 = 10µC and q2 = 5µC are placed 0.1 meter apart in air.
Determine the flux density at a point 0.05m above the mid point of the line
joining the charges. [8]
2. (a) State and explain Gauss’s law. [8]
(b) Using gauss law Find E at any point due to long infinite charge wire. [8]
3. (a) Find the capacitance of a two concentric spherical shells. [10]
(b) A spherical condenser has capacitor 54 Pico farads. It consists of two concen-
tric spheres differing in radii by 4cm and having air as dielectric. Find the
radius of inner and outer spheres. [6]
4. The left half of a horizontal parallel plate capacitor is filled with a dielectric of
Permitivity ǫ while the right half of is air filled. The plate separation is 10 mm,
and there is 100v P.d. between the plates. Find Ē , D̄ and P̄ in both values ǫ = 3ǫ0 ,
and Derive the related expressions. [16]
5. (a) Derive an expression for the force between two current carrying conductors in
the same direction. [8]
(b) Derive the boundary conditions at the magnetic interfaces and show that
tan θ1/θ2 = µr1/µr2 [8]
6. A single-phase circuit comprises two parallel conductors A and B, each 1 cm diam-
eter and spaced 1 m apart. The conductors carry current of +100 and -100 Amps.
respectively. Determine the filed intensity at the surface of each conductor and also
in space exactly midway between A and B. [16]
7. A torroid has a saw cut having a gap of 2 mm. A coil of 200 turns is wound around
the core of the torroid. Mean radius of torroid is 30 cm and area of cross section
of the core is 1 sq. cm. The coil carries a d.c. Current of 10 Amps. Find energy
density in the core and air gap. What is the total energy stored in the core and
also in the air gap. Relative permeability of core material is 2000. [16]
8. Write the Maxwell’s equations for harmonically varying fields? [16]

(b) The construction of a paper capacitor is as follows: Aluminum foil of 100−cm2
area is placed on both sides of paper of thickness 0.03 mm. If the dielectric
constant of paper is given as 3, and its dielectric breakdown strength is 200
kV/cm , what is the rating of the capacitor? [6]

4. (a) Derive the integral form of continuity equation and also write its meaning.

(b) What is the Capacitance of a Capacitor consisting of two parallel plates 30
cm by 30 cm, Separated by 5 mm in air. What is the energy stored by the
capacitor if it is charged to a potential difference of 500 volts. [6]

5. State and prove Ampere’s circuital law. Discuss few applications for the same.[16]

6. A current strip 2cm wide carries a current of 15 amps in the āx direction, as shown in
figure 6. Find the force on the strip of unit length if the uniform field is B̄ = 0.20āy

7. An iron ring has a mean circumference of 125 cm and cross sectional area of 10 cm2 .
It is wound with 500 turns of wire. When it carries 1.5 amps, the flux produced is
1 milli Weber. What is the relative permeability of the iron material and what is
the inductance of the system?. If a length of 1 mm is removed from the iron ring,
what is the new value of inductance of the system? [16]

8. Write Maxwell’s equations in good conductors for time varying fields and static
fields both in differential and integral form? [16]
