Let’s Talk About Actions

Direction: Think and give your answers to the following questions.
1. When did you do the things you listed in Activity 1?____________________
2. What tense of verb did you use? ______________________________________
3. When did you do the things you listed in Activity 2?____________________
4. What tense of verb did you use? ______________________________________
5. Again, what is a verb? ______________________________________________
6. What are the tenses of verb? _________________________________________
 In activity 1 and 2, all your actions were done in the past. These
actions are expressed by action words called verbs.

Examples: During community quarantine, we planted vegetables.

I had prayed before I slept.

The underlined words are verbs. (planted, had prayed, and

slept) They are all in the past actions.

 Again, what is a verb?

 In your past lessons you learned that a verb is an action word. Verb is
used to describe an action or idea and it forms the main part of the
predicate of a sentence.

Examples: She accepts online orders. (The verb is accepts. It shows

action)
I received her message last night. (The verb is received. It
shows action)
I had read her message before I slept. ( the verbs are had read
and
slept. They both express actions))

 The verbs accepts, received and had read are in different tenses.
 Accepts is in the present tense, received is in the past tense, while
had read is in the past perfect tense.

 Do you still remember the tenses of verbs?

What are the tenses of verbs?

READ, THINK, UNDERSTAND AND LEARN.

On this activity, you will learn the difference between simple past and past perfect
tense and how to use them correctly in varied contexts.

TENSES OF VERBS

 Tenses of verb include present, past, and future.

 The past tense of verb is used to talk about things that happened in the past.
There are four forms of past tense Examples

Past simple …………………………….. I observed health protocols.

Past continuous …………………….. I was observing health protocols.
Past perfect ……………………………. I had observed health protocols.
Past perfect continuous……………. I had been observing health
protocols.

Simple Past Tense and Past Perfect Tense

Simple Past tense ……… I observed health protocols.

Past perfect tense……… I had observed health protocols.

What is the difference between simple past tense and past perfect
tense?

These two tenses are both used to talk about things that happened in the past. However, we
use past perfect to talk about something that happened before another action in the past
which is usually expressed by the past simple.

PAST TENSE
The past tense is used for a past activity or a past state of being.

 How to form the SIMPLE PAST TENSE of verbs?

There are two kinds of verbs in the past tense; regular and irregular
verbs.

FORMING THE PAST TENSE OF REGULAR VERBS

 Regular verbs follow the usual rule for forming the simple past
tense.
 the usual rule is to add -d or -ed to the base form

Examples: 1.
I received the invitation yesterday. (receive + d = received)
received is simple past tense
2. We planted vegetables during the lockdown. ( plant + ed = planted)
planted is in the simple past tense

FORMING THE PAST TENSE OF IRREGULAR VERBS

 Do not follow the usual pattern in forming the past tense.
 They form their past tense by changing the spelling,
pronunciation, entire verb, or sometimes the verb does not
change at all.
 the usual rule is to add -d or -ed to the base form

Examples: 1. We went to my grandparents’ house last week. ( the verb is

went. It is in the simple past. went is the past tense of the verb go. )
Went is an example of an irregular verb that changes the
entire verb to form its past tense: go - went
2. My brother came home late last night. (the verb is came.
Came is the past tense of come.)

Came is an example of an irregular verb that changes its spelling to

form its past tense. come- came
3. Early this morning, teacher Joy put the Activity Sheets inside the
designated boxes. (the verb is put. Put in this sentence is in the past tense.)

Put is an example of irregular verb that doesn’t change at all in

forming its past tense. put- put

PAST PERFECT TENSE

The past perfect refers to a time earlier than before now. It is used to
emphasize that one action happened before another action in the
past. It does not matter which action is mentioned first. The tense
makes it clear which one happened first

Example:

Sentence 1: I had watched the video before I went to bed.

(happened first) (happened next)

Past participle simple past tense

Meaning, I watched the video first before I went to bed.

The first action is had watched- which is in the past perfect tense.
The second action is went- in the simple past.
Sentence 2: Before I went to bed, I had watched the video.

(happened next) (happened first)

simple past tense Past participle

Compare sentence 1 with sentence 2.

1. I had watched the video before I slept
2. Before I slept, I had watched the video.
Do the two sentences mean the same?

YES! The meaning is the same! Just the order of the sentence has been switched,
but still the first action that happened is watching the video

 in other words ,these two sentences expressed the same thing.

For negative sentence, we write it this way.

Sentence 1: I had not watched the video before I went to bed.

 We put the word NOT after had.

Sentence 2: Before I went to bed, I had not watched the video.

Again, the meaning is the same!

So, How to form the PAST PERFECT TENSE?

 To form the past perfect tense, use the verb had + past participle form of
the main verb.
 We use the pattern: Subject + had + past participle

Examples:
Subject had past participle
I had watched
We had eaten
She had worked
Remember!

Use past perfect tense ( had + past participle) for action that
happened first.
The second action is in the simple past tense.

To guide you, here are the list of commonly-used irregular verbs :

Past
Past
Present Past Present Past Participle

Note: Most verbs that are not in the list are REGULAR VERBS.

We simply add -d or -ed to form their past tense.
